sct202··on Map of the world's great castles and fortresses
Fort Dearborn in Chicago has a dot, even though no structure exists and it's only a series of plaques on the street now.
sct202··on Mexican government unveils a prototype for a new homegrown, ultra-affordable EV
It makes a lot more sense seeing the image where they place it between a car and rickshaw/tuktuk
sct202··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
One of our SAAS providers launched an AI agent enabled version, and it can follow direction and do tasks & manipulate data/settings in the software like on par with a below average person. When I used it I had a sinking feeling, tons of teams and people will be redundant as these agents improve and roll out to other software.
sct202··on The optimal age to freeze eggs is 19
At least with people fighting with infertility, they want to have children, so helping them have children is more straightforward list of actions than convincing people who don't want kids to have them.
sct202··on Most-read tech publications have lost over half their Google traffic since 2024
You can shape the AI responses for some niche topics relatively easily even on accident. I recently saw 2 people arguing on a forum on a very niche industry topic and one of them started to use Gemini as a source to argue and Gemini was already referencing their thread as a source. I'm imagining people could start doing that on purpose with their own astroturfed blogs and public social media accounts.
sct202··on So many trees planted in Taklamakan Desert that it's turned into a carbon sink
A lot of the roads that cross the desert look like they're flanked by trees or by some kind scrubby grass mounds. This road is flanked by trees or bushes https://maps.app.goo.gl/JW3gxd8wxSiuwhnZ7
sct202··on A lot of population numbers are fake
Just to put some numbers into perspective. China and Europe have roughly the same amount of land, and Europe has a population of 744m (vs your est of <800m for China). So like idk how that would make sense for them to be the same range of population when China seems way more overcrowded.
sct202··on Why some clothes shrink in the wash and how to unshrink them
I accidently mildly shrunk a wool sweater from using warm water instead of cold, and the unshrinking method in the article does not work very much.
sct202··on Spain fines Airbnb €65M: Why the government is cracking down on illegal rentals
They've been expanding their airports over those 20 years; Barcelona's passenger air arrivals has doubled in that time and there is another expansion being planned. Barcelona is not a large city and they should really be coupling every airport capacity increase with an equal increase in tourist accommodations or they end up in an even worse situation.
sct202··on Mozilla appoints new CEO Anthony Enzor-Demeo
And he went in on integrating trendy things like Ads that pay crypto and AI integrated into the browser, so it's not like there wouldn't be AI if he were in charge.
sct202··on Kroger acknowledges that its bet on robotics went too far
Kroger placed one of the sites in Orlando to also service Tampa and Jacksonville when they have 0 regular stores in the entire state. They were trying to use it to expand into the area, but I never saw very much in terms of advertising or promotions to drive demand but it could have also been that the robots were so bad that they couldn't attempt to market and push volume.
sct202··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
With rates that high, it's a disadvantage if you don't have specialists assess your kid for all the things that could qualify them for extra testing time if you have the money to do it.
sct202··on After delays, Egypt set for lavish opening of grand museum
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpegg27g74do

>British Museum gems for sale on eBay - how a theft was exposed

The British Museum is also vulnerable to staff theft.

sct202··on 10M people watched a YouTuber shim a lock; the lock company sued him – bad idea
And even still, whenever I or a friend has hired a locksmith, they try for 5-10 minutes with no success and drill thru the lock destroying it.
sct202··on Why China is winning the trade war
There is always a way out and Europe is starting from an advanced spot. Japan went from a isolated medieval country with very little resources except for people and became an industrial power in 40 years.
sct202··on Nearly 20 Percent Fewer International Students Traveled to the U.S. in August
It's going to be a rough time for a lot of colleges that have been using foreign students paying full price to fund their operations. Especially now that the incoming college aged population is beginning to shrink and the percentage attending college has peaked, so the domestic population probably won't be able to fill the seats at less competitive colleges.
sct202··on Nearly half of drivers killed in (Ohio County) crashes had THC in their blood
The article mentions 30.7 ng/mL which is a level that implies consumption within an hour.
sct202··on Terence Tao: The role of small organizations in society has shrunk significantly
There was a wave of less formal topic based community groups when Meetup launched, but COVID + Meetup buyout & price hikes has led to most of them shutting down.
sct202··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
IEPs and other accommodations are becoming more common with high achievers like with ADHD, anxiety, or depression. On the LSAT test takers with accommodations for extended testing time score 5 points higher on average than the overall pool of test takers, and ADHD is the most common request reason. https://www.lsac.org/sites/default/files/research/TR-24-01.p... (page 4)
sct202··on This blog is running on a recycled Google Pixel 5 (2024)
A similar VPS from Digital Ocean (8GB RAM, 4vcores, 160gb storage) is $48/mo so this seems really cost effective. I'm not really sure how much more performance the vcores have vs a mobile chip but for a blog web server it's probably not a huge issue.
sct202··on Chicago has the most lead pipes in the nation
Needs to be a few minutes depending on where the lead is. I have lead service line and the city does testing and the sample collected after 3 minutes had the highest lead level by over 3x because that was the water that sat overnight in the lead service line.
sct202··on AI crawlers, fetchers are blowing up websites; Meta, OpenAI are worst offenders
I wonder how much of the rapid expansion of datacenters is from trying to support bot traffic.
sct202··on Installing a mini-split AC in a Brooklyn apartment
This is a good idea, and they can check for additional issues with the electrical. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if their meter was hooked up to multiple units or common spaces. The electric company had mixed up every single meter in my old condo build for 15 years.
sct202··on US reportedly forcing TSMC to buy 49% stake in Intel to secure tariff relief
The remaining 51% would be highly fractured unless it was like the US government on the otherside. One of the publicly traded companies I worked at effectively got taken over with <20% of regular shares by an activist billionaire.
sct202··on AMD CEO sees chips from TSMC's US plant costing 5%-20% more
Amkor is building a test and packaging facility in Arizona now, so there will eventually be domestic options.
sct202··on Ryanair may increase commission to staff identifying oversized cabin bags
Only if the staff is fair. Frontier in America pays their staff $10 per bag identified and when they first started, some gate agents went wild trying to get that $10. There were videos of bags that cleanly fit in the sizer but passengers were being charged and threatened with being blocked from the flight if they didn't pay quickly.
sct202··on GlobalFoundries to Acquire MIPS
GlobalFoundries didn't design their own 14/12nm process it was licensed from Samsung.
sct202··on Cloudflare Introduces Default Blocking of A.I. Data Scrapers
My data served by Cloudflare has increased to 100gb /month compared to <20gb like 2 years ago, and they're all fairly static hobby sites. Actual people traffic is down by like half in the same time frame, so I imagine a lot of this is probably cost savings for Cloudflare to reduce resource usage.
sct202··on The economics behind "Basic Economy" – A masterclass in price discrimination
I was thinking it could be AI just from the bullet points bold statement colon structure, but there's a lot of grammatical inconsistencies that I'm not sure an AI would do; for example, the writer's periods and commas are sometimes inside the quotations, sometimes outside, and sometimes both inside and outside.
sct202··on Man 'refused entry into US' as border control catch him with bald JD Vance meme
But here's a link to a local newspaper from his part of Norway: https://www.nordlys.no/mads-sin-drommereise-til-usa-spolert-...

https://archive.ph/h3Uf4 couldn't capture it well but you can see has his name is referenced as Mads Mikkelsen.
