scryers_bloom··on Giant, fungus-like organism may be a completely unknown branch of life
I love your point that avoiding oversimplifications leads to disaster. It explains why I struggle to have a purist mindset while also unable to explain why things go poorly sometimes.
scryers_bloom··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
Don't forget roblox as well. It's past the 20 year old point if you count development time. Although it is slightly different because the platform has changed substantially since 2006.
scryers_bloom··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
This is actually a very interesting point and highlights the fact that most of the famous polymaths only started being talked about long after they were dead (good example is Maupertuis and his work on action in physics).
scryers_bloom··on A love letter to the CSV format
I wrote a web scraper for some county government data and went for tabs as well. It's nice how the columns lined up in my editor (some of these files had hundreds of thousands of lines).

I'm in the opposite lane, I have recently gained an interest in law although I just started my career in software development. Not sure if its too late to go to school now ;)
scryers_bloom··on French researcher denied entry for a personal opinion on Trump administration
I will seriously consider in the near future about withdrawing my future plans from the US if the SCOTUS do not show any backbone to this.
scryers_bloom··on I fear for the unauthenticated web
By snuffing out competition through economies of scale is one explanation.
scryers_bloom··on Oxygen atoms discovered in most distant known galaxy
This galaxy in particular must be one of the first galaxies ever formed. If galaxies are more mature than initially thought, what does this imply about our previous models and imply about what might actually be happening?
scryers_bloom··on Tesla falls after Commerce secretary recommends buying stock
If we are talking specifically about Mahmoud Khalil, who has 0 criminal charges yet risks deportation, do you have any sources for your claim?
scryers_bloom··on Dutch Parliament: Time to ditch US tech for homegrown options
This is extremely enlightening. I'm not surprised New York is basically the most expensive state to live in. There are obvious outliers though, such as Alaska, where you end up paying 50% markup on most basic home amenities just because of transit costs. I think I need to check up on where most of NYS money is really going.
scryers_bloom··on Dutch Parliament: Time to ditch US tech for homegrown options
Although this isn't foreign related, I started a regional freelance software company to help build websites or software for local government and businesses or other kinds of software/IT help. It sucks to know that there are state funded organizations that just impede any sort of locally homegrown software development. And it made me realize that software is one of the strange fields where competition both feels like its extremely lacking or flourishing, depending on which sect your in.
scryers_bloom··on How My Six Months Working on the Railway Changed My Life
I'm a young software developer only 5 months into their new job (after graduating for a year, sucks out here). I feel privileged and guilty for coming out of a single parent household in one of the poorest counties in NYS without ever working one of these jobs. I only ever have respect and admiration for those that work grueling, long hours in blue-collar, hospice care, restaurants, etc.
scryers_bloom··on Crew-9 Returns to Earth
I'm not sure if he's arguing that they were not fairly elected.
scryers_bloom··on Crew-9 Returns to Earth
Doubt it. Musk only owns something like ~15% of Tesla, and owns about 50% of spacex. He knows tesla is overvalued immensely and wants to deeply integrate himself with government to make sure spacex becomes the de facto space org. for the United States (possibly).
scryers_bloom··on You Do Not Need Blockchain: Popular Use Cases and Why They Do Not Work (2019)
Does blockchain have any use case in implementing version control systems?
scryers_bloom··on Repealing the CHIPS Act risks US national security
If we want to play the "whos more dishonest" game, we should probably look at what he said about his own trade agreement years later.
