Hi. I founded a VC with the goal to help Europe regain its sovereignty, starting with Ukraine’s victory.

I’m based in Brussels, working in tech, AI, and startup funding. I run an incubator for US founders who want to move to EU (https://sevenseed.eu)

Hey, sorry to bother you but I was about to google something and I figured I'd ask you instead. Can you remind me the year John Herivel was born, and how old he was when he discovered the Herivel tip?

Please?

To add to it… I can’t find the video of it right now, but a while back I saw people taking a stopped escalator, and the escalator failing into an open hole essentially. Since then I’ve started following said recommendations on not using stopped escalators.

Your president literally does illegal things all the time and your Supreme Court just declares it’s legal because it’s the president.

You have zero moral ground or credibility to stand on.

Confidence votes are a very different type of vote than electoral votes. There’s an argument to make for them. There’s also an argument that it turns a professional job into a popularity contest.

I know it sounds like the commission is full of buddy-buddy jobs but, living in Brussels and seeing the bubble from up close I can tell you that is seldom the case. I can’t say it never happens but the processes and scrutiny these people go through is extremely high.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s often a lot of incompetence that ends up at the helm. But this isn’t something elections solve. Elections turned the leader of the free world into the leader of incompetence.

Adding elections adds democracy, it does not add expertise. If your issue is with bad decisions being made, your issue is not with how the people got in the position to make those decisions, it’s with the systems that allowed bad decisions to be made.

A bad plane pilot can crash your plane and kill you; the fix isn’t to elect your pilots.

Peak 2026 hn to think vibe coding a mobile app for elections is going to “solve” a problem they don’t understand. Do you even hear yourself?

> there needs to be a popular vote across the EU for every commissioner job and the EU Commission head.

Your talking points are misinformed and pretty ridiculous which makes me think you're a troll rather than having a faithful argument. But on the off chance you are trying to have a real discussion: The Council and Parliament both get elected and the commission cannot do anything without them, so it's not like the system is not democratic.

I don't see the US asking for their attorney general or supreme court justices to be democratically elected. At some point you have to trust that the people you actually elect will appoint people who know what they're doing.

Just because there's someone in the chain you're not doing a round of elections on doesn't make the system bad. You need the system to have agency at some point.

Yes, I know Russia. I got to know it even better lately: It's waging war on my continent right now, and murdering my fellow Europeans and their families. I've seen its bombs fall on schools, malls, churches and libraries. I've seen videos of its conscripts having fun, bragging about stealing, raping and murdering civilians.

If you're on the side of history that North Korea supports, you're on the wrong side of it.

The price is far too small. Active propaganda on behalf of a rogue state is an act of war and should be treated as such, IMO.
scrollaway··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
I’m not profiting from the war, I’m donating my time. Idfk what’s wrong with you.

(I mean, I know exactly what’s wrong with you… but you get my drift)

scrollaway··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Yeah mate whatever. Instead of scrolling twitter or whatever, donate some of your actual time to Ukraine and start getting up to speed with what Russia is really doing, straight from the source.

Otherwise you’re just going to continue being what is commonly called a “useful idiot”.

Edit: seeing your other posts, seems like you’re well beyond useful idiot territory and either a Russian agent or plain and simply a troll. Of course it’s always the ones you most expect.

scrollaway··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Little by little, people are realising that Europe is at war. Politicians are trying so hard not to say it because of the implications, but there’s only so long you can keep your head buried in the sand.

We’re under constant attacks from Russia… drones, sabotage, cyberattacks, propaganda campaigns derailing our elections…

I’m sick of it.

I am utterly fascinated by the amount of comments here from engineers that clearly have zero experience with mathematics making utter fool of themselves by claiming to know better than mathematicians what their jargon is/means, how publishing works/should work, etc…

I try not to go down the route of “hn was better before!” but… jeez, do better, people. What happened to this community, there used to be some effort to not be bottom-barrel like this.

scrollaway··on AI Is Breaking This Thing We Call Trust
Ok but why are you comparing different Claude sessions then? Of course they’re different, they have different experiences. Just because they have the same “name” doesn’t make them the same persona.

Compare a single session. It’ll be extremely consistent.

scrollaway··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
Unmistakably so.
scrollaway··on AI Is Breaking This Thing We Call Trust
Your coworkers are if anything less reliably deterministic than an AI. And the human version of a prompt injection is called social engineering and it’s far more of an issue than actual prompt injection and has been for an extremely long time.
scrollaway··on AI Is Breaking This Thing We Call Trust
It may have been when you noticed it but it wasn’t the spark.

If there was an actual spark, it was the 2016 election as this was the first time when all the disinformation, professional troll farms and Russian influence truly came into play on a world changing scale.

But there was splintering of online communities and the death of nuance for years prior as well. Twitter contributed a lot by giving voices to everyone, and promoting those who’d shout the loudest. Facebook and its nasty algorithm also greatly contributed to all this (thanks, everyone who worked there, for the world we have now… hope you’re proud and putting all that ad-sponsored salary to good use).

Culture war was brewing long before, it just got amplified more and more.

scrollaway··on AirPods 5
I want a pair of earphones that are as comfortable as the AirPods Pro but have a very solid mic quality.

Whenever I have a call on my AirPods I feel terrible for whoever’s on the other end of my call because the quality is so bad, even when they’re connected to an iPhone. I originally thought I had hardware issues until I heard from others that all AirPods Pro are like this.

I dunno, can someone tell me what I’m missing here?

I know this is a popular position and it makes sense at face value when you think of LLMs as autocomplete systems. But it’s genuinely wrong.

Relevant reading is most notably anthropic’s research on the J-space. LLMs will plan ahead of time helped with CoT, get to a plan and “store” it in j-space, and execute on that plan which means they can in fact “backtrack” and give you reasoning on why they did something, because it IS part of their state.

HN is not one of the most pro AI spaces. It may be a bit more pro ai than highly secluded communities but the other day I had people responding to me that it’s cooler to be an alcoholic than to use AI.

There is a wide reaching anti AI/AI-denialist sentiment here that is extremely pronounced in some threads, it gets very stupid very quickly. And what I’m referring to is the habit of some users here to always move the goalposts on AGI.

scrollaway··on GPT-6 Astra
The infrastructure you just described is absolutely buildable today if you’re willing to burn tokens.
scrollaway··on GPT-6 Astra
If we manage to get to AGI and it looks, works and behaves like a human brain... I mean, cool, but that's a very useless AGI compared to the incredible stuff we have access to today.

The HN crowd I'm sure will still be unhappy calling it AGI because "it's not AGI unless its speech comes from the cerebral cortex region of the brain, otherwise it's just sparkling emoji" or something.

scrollaway··on Quasar 438B: Europe's Leading AI Model
I was sharing the EIC backed ones, but it's fair that in a datacenter it's more likely to be Axelera (or vsora/semidynamics if you start digging into earlier-stage competitors). Nvidia is the only American company selling AI chips to datacenters at scale but they're a huge supply chain risk so it's most DCs don't do single-supplier either way.
