Read the announcement teaser too and have been super excited for it to drop
The engineers at Zeit have a concept of this WITH magical SPR
I always see info about the Huawei scandal for example, and I would love to read a great write up of more specific technical details of things going on
- 2FA by default
- Push notifications for the token to all your devices instantly
- Not a text message
How long until someone uses this against the “oligarch“ validators?
E.g.: an AdBlock browser extension is on unless they send some microfunds to your account / transfer Libra funds to you.
If you’re not familiar with display ads it’s a literal bidding war per space per user by the advertiser. Platforms don’t care they just get a cut.
Now, I could see this: turn it around and have this “central authority” by having them bidding for you to turn on your ads based on their data’s understanding of likeliness to click.
The front page of Hacker News is pretty much a Google hate hangoutfest -- so maybe cut some slack on this one...
I'm sure the NYT reporter was not acting malicious.
Maybe they will even issue correction or update in time. No one would argue that speed of social media and corrections is not ideal, but I would bet they are trying to be accurate and transparent with their readers.
I just seriously doubt the reporter and editors who published this info did so solely with the goal to attack Google by "promoting" a questionable study.
Wrong/Lazy/Dumb != Evil
I just want cleaner integration for the user. Don’t care about messing with it
Love iMessage autofill on text inputs from text message codes
But... Authy (arguably more secure) is super annoying to open, click, copy, re-window over, click, and then finally paste.
Would be cool if this somehow cleaned up the whole process.
> The template used for response in account denial will be removed entirely. If account access is denied during an appeal, which often is the case as most appeals are true bad actors, the agent must create a reasoned response.
Glad this is seen as an issue and corrected.
IMO, this probably would have made this whole thing never escalate if a better response was previously in place for everyone.
Accidents, shotty support, whatever — all expected these days unless you have big cash money agreements in place.
But to kill an account of a responsive person with a gigantic middle finger email without reasoning was a pretty dumb process in place. You can see the email on the Twitter thread somewhere.
Glad it’s fixed! Still a DO fan here

Stop the personalization engines
Any data is probably never deleted. What makes more sense if a long running script (multiple years??) that updates / inserts / deletes your profile with random information.
Mixed with root variables
Feels like a trick: Login, give us your info, and then privacy checkup.
Just thought it’s funny. Either way, can’t complain the for the efforts being done
You could literally replace that special marketing video at the top of the page [1] with any other Android / Google phone and I wouldn't even be able to tell the difference.
Just feels like a bunch of shiny blah without telling me anything useful. Might as well replace with a toaster. Maybe that's the point...
On a less critical note though, glad Google is pressing cheaper phones. The standard for a reasonable phone is all over town these days
At a certain level of volume, more transparency should be LEGALLY required for multiple companies (auto personalization / recommendation engines / etc.). At least the ability to opt-out. Just hard to define. Could you legally define “bubbling” or super duper smart recommendation algorithms?
Big tech knows this is the direction IMO.
It’s my guess why they randomly started pressing so hard for screen time usage reminders.
They’re selling addiction to kids (and adults).
YouTube, FB, Instagram, Twitter Moments all have liability when it starts to click with everyone.
It’s a serious issue that is totally unregulated and not understood by most.
I must have read online for 2 solid years about how much better/safer and secure Password Managers are before I finally switched to one.
After switching though, the CONVENIENCE of a password manager is the most undersold part of it.
Nothing seems to be perfect solution with security, but if you're reading this and haven't switched to a password manager for whatever reason, security benefits aside I would highly recommend finally doing it.
I see it as a positive for keeping Google in check.
Chrome's marketshare is insane. Google could autoupdate Chrome overnight push out some wild update like requiring you to sign in to use their browser or something else like default rendering everything to AMP wrappers for example... who knows / tinfoil hat time.
Now there's a solid and non-disruptive quick switch default that is already installed (sorry FF, Brave) on Windows machines similar to what Apple has with Safari.
But the #1 thing that stops me from even considering buying an Android device is "it's not iMessage".
iMessage doesn't have single click to video, but it's also automatic. No hassle at all and I can blue bubble send perfection to any other iPhone-r. It's also synced to all my devices flawlessly.
I think that's what is really missing. People don't mind opening another app to place call / facetime / hangout video. They want simple, clear phone messaging that isn't an "app"
This is HILARIOUS to see after the thousands and thousands of negative articles and press over the last year.
Just kind of funny.
I'm sure a fair amount of people are pulling their hair out
