scorpion032··on Most data isn’t “big,” and businesses are wasting money pretending it is
As also some one that has been in the thick of some of the "big data" projects in the industry recently, I have to agree with the article.

One of the terms I learnt in the PyData Silicon Valley in March is "Medium Data". Unless you are dealing with terabytes of RAM and Exa bytes of storage, google style, the overhead of having to maintain a cluster is something most (intelligent) people try to avoid.

When you cant avoid hundreds of machines, the cluster is a necessity and you design that way. But given where the Moore's law curve stands today, most organisations really dont need that.

You can buy servers on Amazon with 250 gigs of RAM for a few dollars an hour. They specifically call it the big data cluster. It is possible to analyse the data using tools like Pandas/Matplotlib and others in the Scientific Python eco system fairly easily.

These tools are being used by scientists and industry for a really long time, except they aren't really advertised that way.

For instance, here is some analysis I was doing recently of the children names in the US, from 1880, with 3 million records: http://nbviewer.ipython.org/53ec0c5a2fabcfebb358. My Mac could handle it without even breaking a sweat.

scorpion032··on RubyMotion Goes 2.0 And Gets OSX Support, Templates and Plugins
I am very keen to know what Apple thinks about RubyMotion. It seems like a fine tool; but it's not typical Apple to allow external commercial vendor to influence it's core development environment.

Anyone from Apple, or anyone that gained the sense in events like WWDC, care to share?

scorpion032··on Foursquare raises $41 million Series D round
Curated content > Social content.

I have been in the SF bay area, NYC, Europe and looked up TripAdvisor all the time. I tried to see if Foursquare provided any more useful information. Unfortunately, none.

Personally, I love Quora of late. There is a huge audience there already (that are actually intelligent and I care about). There are tags for everything and comments and up/down votes, not to mention the real time aspect of everything.

So, if I want to write anything (thats not really technical), I'd probably use Quora at this point. Quora is all about content anyway, so your content a'int going anywhere. The ability to create new blog on Quora is pretty good too.

I feel bad about their aggressive user acquisition strategy needing everyone to sign up to even view the content and I wish they were much more open; but despite that, the platform, content there and the people there are too good for me to consider looking anywhere else for general writing.

scorpion032··on Ask HN: What Are Your RubyMotion Gotchas?
Even with RubyMotion, you have to still learn the full iOS API. There is no way around that. You save a little bit of syntax, but Xcode is a pretty good IDE so that isn't the big deal.

The big deal is the community and culture of the open source that comes with Ruby folks. The number of open source RubyMotion applications is already perhaps higher than the objective C ones.

If I were to choose to build ONE iOS product today, I'd prefer to do it in the native objective C. But if I am a shop that plans to build quite a few of them, RubyMotion would be my choice.

scorpion032··on I made $200K and PayPal locked my account
You can deposit the funds without any tax details or linking any bank account. But you cannot withdraw it without one.

If transferring money without SSN is illegal; I wonder how collecting it without one would be legal.

scorpion032··on Ask HN: How do you stop regretting?
If you are happy where you are right now (one has to be always, because the possibilities are endless); and if where you are right now is a sum total of everything that has ever been before (which it is); then how can you ever regret anything that happened ever before?
scorpion032··on Our Django Book is Launched
I posted it on reddit first off the top of my head directly.

Then I noticed the thread on Hacker News and started writing a comment; deleted it and copy-pasted from my own reddit comment and went to bed peacefully.

Which part of this is not right?

scorpion032··on Our Django Book is Launched
I just completed reading it.

I haven't been working with django recently and having completely read the book, I am now up to date.

* The book has a lot of practical advice having developed using django for years. For example, the book recommends, whenever you have a custom manager, always explicitly define `objects` as the default manager, before the custom manager.

* The book makes a recommendation; but also mentions alternatives where applicable. The authors prefer a 3 tier project layout but also suggest that a lot of people prefer the 2 tier layout where the `manage.py` is in the root of the repository. Similarly in the chapter on the Class Based Views. The book suggests an approach and also includes other ones.

* Includes the latest and the new changes in the django 1.5 wrt the User model and how to inherit.

* Recommends and suggests many good third party applications. More books need to do this.

* Provides good review material (if you already know) about Security, Deployment, performance etc.

All of this, just over the top of my head.

Real world advice is often hard to come by. Whether you are a professional or a novice or just checking out django, you should buy this book.

I just bought the PDF. But since I plan to read it on my iPhone, an ePub version that looks good would be a great.

(Reading an A4 PDF on an iPhone isn't really comfortable.)

scorpion032··on Introducing the PiCloud Notebook
The iPython Notebook is really amazing which is seriously under utilised and under marketed.

Every "I will teach beginner to program" site these days creates a new platform which starts with "Enter you name in quotes" ends up re-inventing the whole server-client console thing. Not every one of these platforms does a great job at it.

All you need really is an iPython notebook (which btw can also be used for alternative languages, there is a fork that runs ruby) which has alternative "markdown cells" and the "console cell".

The tech behind the whole thing is rather impressive. It uses zMQ, Tornado and can connect multiple client terminals to the given server.

This can be integrated for development with web frameworks like django/flask and can be very useful for debugging.

scorpion032··on India Launches Beta Version of Its Data Site
One of the core values of any government should be to make available all of it's data freely to all citizens available via API.

Everything being publicly auctioned and the free data available publicly will stop many of the scams of the nature India is going through right now.

I am not sure if any one would, but if someone comes up with a bill that holds the powers-that-be responsible under the "Duty to Report" bill, I would support them.
