scopendo··on How to talk to anyone and why you should
It's the demographic distribution of those 8 billion that's the problem.
scopendo··on How England misplaced its first king
Their series earlier this year, covering Alfred the Great through to William the Conqueror, was one of their best, I think (and I'm a fan).
scopendo··on SAP splashes €20B on Euro sovereign cloud push
The alternative of 10^12 (trillion) seems a stretch to say the least.
scopendo··on The Future of Ultra-Fast Passenger Travel
I would hazard to say very many people, me included.
scopendo··on Launch HN: Issen (YC F24) – Personal AI language tutor
Yep. Really dislike the American flag being used as the symbol for English.
scopendo··on Cursor 1.0
I tried previous iterations of JetBrain's AI without much love, but need to look at Junie.

Using Windsurf plugins in JB ides has been working for me, albeit not as powerful yet as the Windsurf VS Code fork.

scopendo··on An NFC movie library for my kids
This is a product.
scopendo··on Apple Pushes Ahead with Tabletop Home Device in Shift to Robotics
Don't ever get a cocker spaniel then
scopendo··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
The panic was started by SVB, not VCs. Abstract this to any other bank and the reaction would have been the same.
scopendo··on Ask HN: What is the biggest bullet you ever dodged?
Decided not to wear the life jacket whilst kayaking in Thailand. A speedboat came around the corner, then straight at me, such that I rolled off the kayak into the water. Whilst I still was struck by the propeller, I expect that I'd be gone had I been wearing the jacket.

I was also extremely lucky that I ended up having down and got hit in the butt as, to others, there's nothing that suggests I was in such a traumatic accident.

scopendo··on Poll: Contractors, what is your hourly rate
It's (subjectively) justified if there's a lot more social support – for example, some of the Nordic countries.
scopendo··on Poll: Contractors, what is your hourly rate
Whilst high, not sure it makes any sense to compare the systems.
scopendo··on Shenandoah in OpenJDK 17: Sub-millisecond GC pauses
All I want is named parameters so that I don't need to have N variations of the same method with different signatures, also particularly helpful for understanding boolean parameters.
scopendo··on Earnest Capital Trailhead
Reminds me of the way many landlords seem to treat their tenants.
scopendo··on Beyond Petra
Absolutely - and regarding Jordan, whilst Petra was a definitely worth the visit, there's so much more to Jordan that has me wanting to return, not least, the people.

edit: typo

scopendo··on Nobody Cares About OAuth or OpenID Connect
Is that architecture helpful for a saas app that needs to support users from corporate customers using single sign-on via an OIDC or SAML provider like Azure AD or ADFS?

I looked into using Okta or Auth0 for this sort of setup, but both were prohibitively expensive for a saas app.

scopendo··on Ask HN: What do you use for authentication and authorization?
How do you implement that cache invalidation, assuming a multiple app server environment? Is it something like a separate redis server?
scopendo··on Microsoft launches Windows 10 on ARM
Can't help but think this was just a marketing error. Had they called the OS something like SurfaceOS instead of WinRT, perhaps the expectation would have been something more accepted, akin to iOS and MacOS.
scopendo··on Why we choose Java instead of a polyglot stack
Does that mean that you use JDBI for DB access?
scopendo··on How Google Inbox shares 70% of its code across Android, iOS, and the Web
I don't know about GWT, but certainly Inbox in Chrome desktop feels much more sluggish than the app on my Android phone.
scopendo··on Neo Technology Just Closed $20M in Funding
I was at a Neo4j intro meetup earlier in the week. They do market it as a primary DB. Maybe the capabilities are different now.
scopendo··on Show HN: Learn to code by being coached by an experienced developer for free
Possibly (I wasn't aware of that), however I'd prefer something a bit larger in scope, taking in the larger application and even the architecture.
scopendo··on Show HN: Learn to code by being coached by an experienced developer for free
Rather than direct learning assistance, I'd be interested in a review service as most of the time I can get stuff to work just fine, but there is likely a better or more idiomatic way. Particularly relevant in a new dev space and unfamiliar with respected frameworks and libraries already out there.
scopendo··on Facebook Is No Longer the Most Popular Social Network for Teens
Maybe - though my guess is that they'll join a university population and/or workforce and start interacting with the wider world, that just happens to be significantly on Facebook. But at 40 mine is hardly a relevant opinion :)
scopendo··on Medium Sucks
I've never thought of Medium as a blogging platform but rather an article publishing platform with tools to encourage conversation and sharing around each article.
scopendo··on How Exercise Can Calm Anxiety
I don't have the study, but I do have my own experience. About 5 years ago I was lucky to survive being hit by the propellor of a speedboat. I was struck across the sacrum, crushing nerves and fracturing both the sacrum and tailbones, as well as a deal of laceration for good measure. There is always a pressure, stiffness and dull spinal ache and occasional acute pain - though fortunately not too often for the latter.

Anyway, I find now that if I do any duration of impact-based activity that I will pay for it; I feel each impact in my spine, though that is bearable for a while, but the next day my lower spine and sacral area will be stiff and sore. Whereas when I swim there is neither immediate nor consequential pain relating to the injury.

It's lucky that I'm a lazy bastard and didn't intend on running anyway :p

scopendo··on Rust 0.7 Released
If memory serves you right, then it shouldn't matter :)
scopendo··on Ambition can be poison
Frankly, I don't care whether David's post is this or that. What I care about is the point - optimise your life for happiness and recognise that happiness is in the doing, in the living, not the outcome.
scopendo··on Netflix or LoveFilm? In the UK you might want both
I've started to use Blinkbox, which is buy-and-stream service. The content seems fresher if you don't mind buying versus subscribing.
scopendo··on iOS 7
Sadly, for those families where the iPad is just another shared computing device, it would appear that there is still no multi-user support. Bummer.
