schrodingersCat··on 500 Yard No-Look Rifle Shot With Android Using TrackingPoint Shotview
I'm not usually a big fan of this sort of stuff (firearms marketing), but this is hella cool tech
schrodingersCat··on Java Security Hole
I submitted this to https://cryptanalys.is. Its like HN but for crypto-savvy bitcoin geeks. Nice find though, thanks for the share!
schrodingersCat··on Plug – Native OS X client for Hype Machine
Huzzah! A HN admin saw this thread and re-enabled voting (Thanks Daniel!). Up-voted...
schrodingersCat··on Plug – Native OS X client for Hype Machine
If for some reason I wasn't up-vote banned, I'd give this +1. I cannot stress how nice this UI looks. Had not really looked into hype-machine prior to this, but I really like it so far.
schrodingersCat··on Craft Cocktail Mixer Curated Box
Is this a one and done thing, or a subscription? Personally I'm interesting in trying craft / small batch bitters, unusual secondary ingredient liquor / liqueurs, as well as different non alcoholic mixers. You may run into legal problems if you mail alcohol in some states. Including recipes of drinks that can be made with shipped ingredients would also be useful.

If this is more a seasonal / gift item, I would suggest including any specialized bar tools needed for the cocktail or specialty glassware.

schrodingersCat··on Compress your DSLR videos 4.5x (OS X bash script)
This is a nice script. If you write a blog post about what you do, why you wrote the script, and how it it works, I bet people on HN will want to read about it.
schrodingersCat··on If your Mac Spotlight won't work
This might be better receive don stackexchange
schrodingersCat··on Why can't arrays be passed as function arguments in C?
The type of array in C will determine how it is store din memory (see here for a good description: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/10696024/how-is-the-arra...). Unlike a dynamic language like ruby or python, C statically addresses the elements of an array in memory. Pointers refer to the memory address of the array elements allowing you to use them as a variable, but not the whole array.
schrodingersCat··on What will it take to get people using PGP for email?
The problem will all come down to UX.

* Key generation and exchange is a challenge. Most people I have taught how to use gpg / pgp can't seem to figure out how to publish there keys, send or receive keys.

* Entering your password often is a pain. Most people I have taught have given up using this on a day-to-day basis because its just such a pain.

As an aside, there's the problem of improper use. Right now there are too many choice as to how you can setup pgp leading to the problem of people using it wrong. And don't get me started on private key security. Most people do NOT want to think about this. Quite honestly, I agree. Something needs to be done to make it very hard to compromise your own private key.

schrodingersCat··on A Face Recognition Algorithm That Outperforms Humans?
I'll have to run this by my friend who writes morphometrics algorithms, as I can;t actally tell what is new about this paper. This might actually allow for a proper photo-matching search engine. All the ones that I have tried to this point have been lacking or broken...
schrodingersCat··on NSA Said to Exploit Heartbleed Bug for Intelligence for Years
I hesitate to believe that in 2 years time, the agency hasn't found another backdoor to the web. OpenSSL might be patched, but what else is still vulnerable?
schrodingersCat··on Ask HN: Do you think HN needs a new look?
Yes. There are quite a few apps / browser additions that enhance the usability and or readability of HN. Aesthetically, I actually like the minimalism of HN, but would love for some of these usability features to be added in by default
schrodingersCat··on How does one remove their HN account?
Apparently you cannot do this:

From http://jacquesmattheij.com/The+Unofficial+HN+FAQ:

"HN does not have a way to delete your account directly, but you can ‘anonimize’ your profile by removing any identifying information there. The email address is not visible for outsiders so you don’t need to worry about that, simply wipe your about box and call it a day. If you used your real life name as your username it’s a bit more of a problem, especially if your name is not ‘John Smith’, you could try emailing the owner of the site but I would reserve that to those occasions where you really think it matters.

If this is to ‘unsay’ stuff that you wrote in the past then that’s a good reminder to think twice before you hit that submit button lest you cause someone needless work."

schrodingersCat··on First Ubuntu phone pics surface
Gah! I hope not. Ubuntu has great ARM support, so there's really no excuse not to use one of the many low power SoCs available.
schrodingersCat··on Ask HN: How do you manage your photos?
My workflow is dropbox camera sync -> Lyn (OSX; worth the $20) -> (optionally) lightroom / GIMP -> Lyn library backup to cloud (currently Box because i have a 50gb account). My current project is to learn the flickr api and build a sync tool for it in python
schrodingersCat··on Google testing an NSA proof encryption for Google Drive
My guess is that this will go nowhere. How on earth would google monetize a product it couldn't use to specifically target ads? However, I could see this as a paid tier.
schrodingersCat··on Travel Tips for Geeks: Preventing Theft
I once read that putting a rubber band around your wallet will "trick" a pick pocket but have not heard whether or not this is true.
schrodingersCat··on Ask HN: How does your business manage passwords?
My question would be: what massive number of third party services could your company possibly be using to require password management for all users? Most companies I've worked for use enterprise versions of services that integrate with central authentication, making multiple logins unnecessary. I could see admins, web devs, and social media types needing a dedicated solution but not all 40 in your company. Keepass isn't perfect but its just as good as most other solutions I've seen. I believe lastpass offers an enterprise product you may want to check out.
schrodingersCat··on OpenVPN: Simple Overview
I have been toying with the idea of setting up my own vpn server using one of my r-pi's, but really needed some guidance on the right way to do this. Thanks for this overview
schrodingersCat··on Is web scraping illegal? Depends on what the meaning of the word is is.
If your name is AT&T, then the answer is yes.
schrodingersCat··on Ask HN: Text editor w/ browser and html inspector built-in, makes sense?
Can't you basically do this in Firefox now (with the developer console and inspector)? What does this product do that you cannot do with current browser developer tools?
schrodingersCat··on Ask pg: why have hellbans become so widespread on HN?
you're not banned
schrodingersCat··on Cipherscan: simple SSL discovery
Is there an advantage to this over sslscan (http://sourceforge.net/projects/sslscan/)?
schrodingersCat··on The Raspberry Pi’s Hardware Random Number Generator
Though I can't speak to they're adoption in actual hardware, thermal noise generators are apparently a common way to generate random numbers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_random_number_generat...). I would be interested to hear details on how the pi's generator works.
schrodingersCat··on The Raspberry Pi’s Hardware Random Number Generator
Perhaps this is a new application for the pi? A dedicated entropy appliance could be useful
schrodingersCat··on Simulating slow or laggy network connections in OS X
This is a nice trick for quick and dirty prototyping, but I think most full stack devs will need a solution that is more robust for testing
schrodingersCat··on Former Top NSA Lawyer Blames Civil Libertarians For 9/11
There is certainly a lot of FUD floating around. This seems to be a tactic to switch the topic off the conversation of PRISM and warrant-less data collection in general. Seriously, read the PsyOps handbook (https://www.fas.org/irp/doddir/army/fm3-05-30.pdf). They are now using these same tactics to essentially go to war against the people who want to stop them (i.e. the civil libertarians). Think that would be illegal? Nope, the law stopping it was repealed: http://thecable.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2013/07/12/us_backs_.... The spring 2013 issue of 2600 had a great article on extra-judicial actions that state actors take against dissidents (US and other regimes). I highly recommend reading it.
schrodingersCat··on Ask HN: What do you look for in a VPN service?
Well, I would like it to work without 3rd party software. I want assurances in privacy and anonymity. If this service is based in the US, this mean NOT keeping much in the way of logs or records. I want assurances from a crypto expert that your service is secure. It also NEEDS to have perfect forward secrecy enabled from the start to "prevent intercept and decrypt later" attacks. Bandwidth caps are annoying but probably necessary - mine currently is ~$20 / month and 50gb cap. Accepting btc is a plus.
schrodingersCat··on New surgical knife prototype can instantly detect cancer
The standard way for a surgeon to detect if he has removed a tumor is a frozen section. This would appear to vastly improve upon the current tools available and perhaps allow for more successful surgeries. It is nice to see metabolomics being applied in a clinical setting.
schrodingersCat··on Make C look Good
This is such a simple trick that makes a huge difference in the readability of the code. Thanks for sharing
