schiptsov··on Ask HN: I am wasting so much of time, what can I do?
$ sudo apt-get remove firefox chromium pidgin telepathy ekiga skype ^_^

update: the situation you describe indicates that you just don't like your job. You have no joy in doing what you're supposed to do. So, consider the possibility of changing your job to something you're really like and enjoy.

schiptsov··on The Drupal Crisis
Community of whom? Active developers or passive users? Development and usage of a product are not the same thing. ^_^

Yes, it has grown, and now it is going flat. Try to visualize the trend - imagine a bell curve (the only type of curve hackers know) and point out where the current time stamp is - on a growing or falling slope? ^_^

OK, to look a little bit more professional: doing a major rewrite of already mature project is a tricky thing (look what a terrible mess Gnome3 is or a recent Ubuntu), because users are passive and tend to use what they call a stable versions.

We can see the same situation with Python3 (although it has real improvements and much less buggy) and with ruby19, where the Rails guys are pushing it as hard as they can, but inert users still want 1.8.

So, users are happy with drupal6 and variety of third-party modules, while independent developers are losing their interest.

schiptsov··on Reddit user explains aging vs cancer
That is nice explanation. As our ancestors used to say - Clarity is an evidence. ^_^

There is another simple point - who on earth will ever publish a study which proves that the whole ready food and fast food industry makes us sick, that the whole idea of office work (and driving a car!) is deeply wrong and that just vegetarian diet and regular exercise, e.g. agriculture work, and community of our equals is what we need because it defines what we are? ^_^

Of course, the study that shows that common sense has some sense will never be widely pushed through media. First, who will give you money to prove things that everyone knew but forgot? And corporations, who need to push more crap to get more profit, will stop it on very early stage, because that is the best strategy for them.

So, yes, diet, exercise and proper state of the mind (avoidance of stress, attachments, passions) together makes us healthy and younger, but people knew this for aeons without any Wikipedia articles. ^_^

schiptsov··on The Drupal Crisis
May be its time is just over? I mean that the time of personal CMS or blogs or just small personal sites is definitely over.

For Drupal - they got lost momentum, lost a lot of active developers, lost fans, lost community. The game, when everyone wants his own site in the net, is over. Enjoy your FB page. ^_^

I think you can see the same situation of stagnation in Wordpress also, and, I hope, finally, in PHP world in general. ^_^

schiptsov··on Ask PG: What has changed since you wrote Hackers and Painters in 2004?
I think this predisposition may be not for equality but for cooperation. We have empathy, we have child care hard-wired and we have some sort of protection against cheaters, to benefit the whole community. (it is not a cultural invention, it is, like you've said, genetic predisposition).

Equality/inequality is, I think, a cultural factor. Culture is also subject to some sort of evolution process, which means that some inventions got lost, but some remain and evolve. So, more equal society is indeed more stable and healthy. You might not see so intense struggling or competition which means less innovation and so-called progress, but innovations or progress aren't among ultimate goals of the process of human evolution.

schiptsov··on The Best Science Fiction Books (According to Reddit)
Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep is really good book. The movie is also nice, but it is almost independent masterpiece in itself. These dresses of Rachel, these rainy streets. Never mind.

Btw, A Scanner Darkly is also good novel by Philip K. Dick, but it never appear in any such ratings. It is almost that dark and depressive as Electric Sheep. ^_^ http://www.amazon.com/Scanner-Darkly-Philip-K-Dick/dp/067973...

As for Zelazny, A Night In Lonesome October is very nice read. http://www.amazon.com/Night-Lonesome-October-Roger-Zelazny/d...

schiptsov··on Increased performance ten-fold by switching to a superior language
Erlang isn't superior just because its VM is faster and well-designed for high throughput.

It is superior because it is functional, which means, while it's possible, less state, less undefined behavior, less crashes, less bugs. Because it has efficient process-based execution model - easy scalable with less complication, less synchronization, less overhead.

It is superior because it is less verbose and more readable which is really matters for a language, not its runtime.

There are only two big problems with Erlang - there is no huge mediocre crowds with knowledge of language basics and some cowboy-coding experience gained from monkey-spaghetti-patching of some bunch of web-pages, and it has no hyped projects like adding libevent functionality to really good (no kidding!) in-browser VM. (hint: General purpose VM should be, at very least, SMP-aware).

btw, Trolls of all countries, unite! ^_^

schiptsov··on TechCrunch As We Know It May Be Over
Is this situation somehow related to 'improper' coverage of recent airbnb's issues at the time of its 1 billion valuation? ^_^
schiptsov··on "Apache now serves twice as many hostnames as this time last year"
Who cares, it is mainstream but nginx vs. IIS statistics is very funny.

  Microsoft 154,685	15.55%	153,015	15.38%	-0.17
  nginx 71,517 7.19% 72,511 7.29% 0.10
schiptsov··on HP to produce 100,000-200,000 TouchPads to clear out supplier inventories
Oh I get it, it's very clever.

Consider what will happen in a not so long run when the money spent by companies behind those brands start to work in full swing.

schiptsov··on Node.js vs jRuby vs Java (Nobody cares about your technology) ...
This guy, it seems, still don't realize that there is no silver VM^Wbullet and never will be, and choosing appropriate tools for each particular task is still absolutely necessary. ^_^

And that clarity, readability and common idioms of a language matters more than its runtime, and that 100k of Java or Javascript code is not the same pile of crap as 100k of Python or Ruby code, assuming that it is not specially obfuscated. ^_^

Fast prototyping that some stacks (VM+frameworks) provide has no correlation with real production environments where you must consider a system in terms of data-flows, content types, separate storage for different types and flows of data, different levels of caching, and so on.

And, of course, in most cases, serving a content from a file on modern FS with help of a little C code is much faster end more efficient than serving the same content with some cool VM involved. ^_^

schiptsov··on HP to produce 100,000-200,000 TouchPads to clear out supplier inventories
IOS vs. Android is almost the same story as Win 2000 vs. Linux 10 years ago, don't you see? Community of active developers, not mere consumers, is what matters. At least I believe it is Google's strategy. ^_^

And fragmentation issues will self-resolve, as it was in modern Linux world - only strongest will survive. And the winner is Ubuntu, like it or not. Community matters.

schiptsov··on HP to produce 100,000-200,000 TouchPads to clear out supplier inventories
OK, lets name some names. Kindle. Nook. Galaxy Tab. Xoom. All those Japanese, Korean and Chinese vendors who're trying to catch.
schiptsov··on HP to produce 100,000-200,000 TouchPads to clear out supplier inventories
Too late, no momentum, no real innovations. Just one Javascript/node.js hype is not enough to push to the market a new product, that should compete with iOS and Android.

Try to imagine how big Android is today and what momentum it has.

schiptsov··on HP to produce 100,000-200,000 TouchPads to clear out supplier inventories
No one needs yet another Android today. Especially investing it its development. The game is over. Google won. ^_^

Update: the key words here are today and investing.

schiptsov··on HP to produce 100,000-200,000 TouchPads to clear out supplier inventories
Hardware is cheap, software is expensive nowadays. And software was the cause of failure.
schiptsov··on Do happier people work harder?
yeah, they are so serious and proud, these hackers. =)
schiptsov··on Do happier people work harder?
No. Happier people work smarter. ^_^

Already down voted by cool hackers, so perhaps I need to put some first-grader-level explanations. ^_^

The classical saying declares that 'the only hell on Earth is ignorance'. The description of stupidity is, in general, 'restricted, repetitive behavior'. Several studies says that what we call a luck is a matter of attention and awareness (Catch the moment! - you know). Stress reduces awareness, make people too narrow, too repetitive (defense mechanism). Now, try to recall an illustration from famous (among hackers) Alan Kay's lectures, where people digging for a treasure and they're doubling the effort instead of shifting to other place. And at last, but not least, especially related to silent down-voting - one can't see what one don't know - recognizing has this 're' in front of it. ^_^

So, happier people, which means less restricted, less repetitive, less self-limited, more open, more aware, more awake, with broader vision and greater attention, calmer and balanced yes, in consequence, work smarter rather than harder.

schiptsov··on X86 Oddities
any reasons to NOT using x86_64 and forget about ia32? Netbooks? They're obsolete. ARM/Android will be everywhere next year. ^_^
schiptsov··on Linux is now hosted on GitHub
http://trac.webkit.org/
schiptsov··on Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" on Google Japan
That is really nice mix of several genres - anime, video games, that new crazy trend to design everything like screenshot from a ZX Spectrum game, and, of course, that vocal and drive. Really nice work of a modern art. ^_^
schiptsov··on Linux is now hosted on GitHub
Most Java/Commercial has painful web interface. But smart people are using trac (Webkit, for example) or develop their own solution inspired by trac - code.google.com =)

Once again: trac is REALLY GOOD and no other project can compete for clarity and all other words form that UX crap. ^_^

schiptsov··on The Sugary Secret of Self-Control
Nonetheless, the very idea of self-control has acquired a musty Victorian odor. - Rly? How about Eastern cultures who rely on self-control as a foundation for ages and ages? How about Art of War and other classic Chinese texts? How about The Book of Five Rings and other classics about mortal fights? What about Tibetan tradition which emphasizes self-control as a recruitment for self-transformation? Zen and other traditions based on Buddha's teachings? And, at last, what about Greek's 'Conquer yourself' maxim, which is the second most important one after 'Catch The Moment'? ^_^

It seems like modern journalist, same as modern hackers, are completely unaware, that all those self-help books, starting from Dale Carnegie's and Napoleon Hill's ones are mere compilations and oversimplifications of general western and some times eastern philosophy? But why, not everyone has a degree in Philosophy like the founder of this site. ^_^

The level of submissions and discussions on HN is somewhere below zero, after it became a huge mainstream site. Now being hacker is an ability to praise and admire some celebrities to silently down-vote people whom they can't appreciate or even understand.

Is there any new small community, with at least a little bit above mediocre level? ^_^

schiptsov··on Ask HN: I think My code isn't Good enough
Really nice summary, because it applicable to almost everything, if you one paraphrases the first item as 'look around what others do, and why, learn, and then change the way you do the same things' . ^_^

schiptsov··on 9 million hits/day with 120 megs RAM
There was some post about a happy Win/IIS/CF guy - he definitely should read this.. ^_^
schiptsov··on CloudStack drops 'open core' goes completely open source
Have you noticed, that this point, which I have not meant to make, is very common, and situation you described - such complicated mess of layers and layers of useless abstractions, bugs and poor design decisions, is the description of a common Java project? And that description cannot be applied for most of other common languages, except PHP, which is much worse nightmare and a triumph of incompetence in itself.)))
schiptsov··on CloudStack drops 'open core' goes completely open source
Servlets and containers are here because I saw them in the sources on github. ^_^

if the language and libraries are subjectively much, much nicer. - that is a huge mean - choosing appropriate tools for some particular task. ^_^
