schemathings··on Streaming subtitled box sets is the new Eurovision
My favorite synopsis of Napoleon is from the City of Men TV Series where the teacher explains European politics in terms of favela gangs to make it relevant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rByBefzeY98 the meat is at around 22:47
schemathings··on Tell HN: A case of negative SEO I caught on my service and how I dealt with it
My understanding with recipe sites is the copy isn't really for SEO as much as it is to have something you can copyright, because recipes in isolation can't be.
schemathings··on Is there still somebody in the Cairo community who is able to make a release?
I'm only aware of Cairo from 3b1b manim, where it's one of very few named dependencies (cairo, ffmpeg, sox, latex). https://github.com/3b1b/manim .. Maybe he'll rewrite it in Julia :)
schemathings··on Show HN: Memex – A proof of concept built in Electron and Chrome Extension
Was interested to try this .. appears the Chrome extension is missing build.js when I run yarn.
schemathings··on Russian Espionage and Electromagnetic Fields: The Story of the Theremin (2017)
Minor nit: "After his successful tour of Russia, in the late 1920s Lenin sent Theremin to Western Europe, where the legend of his mysterious instrument quickly grew."

Lenin died in 1924.

schemathings··on The crash of the global flower trade
The US saw it as a good alternative to the cocaine trade .. "To offer incentives for alternative crops, the US under the administration of President George HW Bush passed the Andean Trade Preference Act in 1991, which dropped duties on agricultural products like flowers for Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia."

So there's that.

schemathings··on The 1, 2, n pattern
Had this described as "Three or more, use a for"
schemathings··on Ask HN: Book recommendations for understanding financial systems?
I listened to the audiobook version of 3 books by Adam Tooze in the past year and found them to be excellent for understanding how finance works, through 3 separate case studies/examples if you will ..

1. The Deluge: The Great War, America and the Remaking of the Global Order describes how most of the current global financial structures were formed, through the lens of WW1 policy

2. The Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy .. moves you forward to WW2/post-depression economy

3. Crashed: How a Decade of Financial Crises Changed the World (recommended elsewhere in this thread) .. brings things up to current times

schemathings··on An industrious mouse tidies up a retired electrician’s tool shed each night
Reminds me of a book I had as a kid about Anatole the Mouse .. he would sneak into a cheese factory at night and taste the samples and leave tasting notes, which benefited the cheese factory .. [Anatole (mouse) - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatole_%28mouse%29)
schemathings··on Mitre Systems Engineering Guide (2014) [pdf]
I worked on a defense contract for an upgrade to a radar system for the USAF years ago, MITRE was the 'IV&V' contractor for the project.

They had smart engineers, we had smart engineers. At each step along the way in the classic waterfall model they would ask (early) why the design was a certain way / (later) why the code was a certain way. Not adversarial, but making sure the customer (US Gov't, taxpayers) were getting what they paid for and not a snow job or wishful thinking.

schemathings··on Uncap - Map Caps Lock to Escape on Windows, Linux, and macOS
Why does it have 2 USB ports?
schemathings··on Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation
Someone mentioned this in the past few months .. looks useful but I wish there were keyboard shortcuts ..
schemathings··on Calorie per Dollar List – Eat for 21 Dollars a Week
I chuckled when I saw in the cookbook to microwave for 99 seconds because it's more efficient than punching in 1:39. I do the same thing :)
schemathings··on Black – Uncompromising Python code formatter
FWIW gg=G formats in vim (whole doc), with lots of variations available .. more examples: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/506075/how-do-i-fix-the-...
schemathings··on Things to use in Python 3
I didn't start using python til 3, but list comprehensions and f-strings are great. I've really been enjoying the coding style.
schemathings··on Music: A Mathematical Offering (2006)
"David J. Benson is a 6th Century Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen." ? Piqued my curiosity!
schemathings··on What happened after my 13-year-old son joined the alt-right
Curious where you got 'poorer' out of that. I'm a city boy all my life, but I've driven the country quite a few times - I could picture the Grizzly dip guy with guns and snowmobiles being in Wyoming .. https://www.deptofnumbers.com/income/wyoming/
schemathings··on Show HN: M4b-tool – a tool to merge, split and chapterize audiobooks
I have sort of an opposite wish for the chapter detection feature. I'm a big fan of podcasts that tell a story per season or whatever you want to call it. Lot's of them have an intro ad for an indeterminate period of time and signal the beginning of the episode with an intro blurb usually voice over of 'welcome to ..' with some background music. I really don't mind listening to the ads the first time through but would love to save whole seasons without the leader ads as an M4b file - I've thought about writing this in the past, just haven't gotten to it. The ability to detect those points in a series of mp3s and bundle them up into an m4b would be super useful in my book.
schemathings··on Show HN: M4b-tool – a tool to merge, split and chapterize audiobooks
Another poster cited "a cover per chapter, etc" as an advantage, but I don't see that capability in the linked tool (and I don't think it's part of the m4b format, which is a shame - the ability to change art per chapter or even more so, at points in the timeline, would really open some new uses e.g. saved lectures with slides).
schemathings··on How pharmaceutical industry financial modelers think about rare diseases
Funny, I never even noticed that, but apparently so .. his last comment in the description is "Apologies to Danny Hoyle" and a (now broken) link to "You Suck at Photoshop" videos.
schemathings··on How pharmaceutical industry financial modelers think about rare diseases
If your goal is to have your ego deflated in Excel, this is always a good place to start .. "You Suck at Excel with Joel Spolsky" .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nbkaYsR94c but I agree, Shkreli definitely had the whole speed run thing down with Excel.
schemathings··on How pharmaceutical industry financial modelers think about rare diseases
When the whole Martin Shkreli saga was making the news I ran across his youtube channel and did end up watching his 'How to analyze a clinical trial' series of 4 videos to understand the process .. they're long but it was interesting to some extent as someone from outside that industry .. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8gjB1PSXv_oAUSAQ16S0fA/sea...
schemathings··on Linux Network Queues Overview
Nice writeup and diagrams. Ironically I was just cleaning some notes I have for using iproute2 netem qdisc to simulate network conditions, that I use periodically.

Here's a good overview (not written by me) http://wiki.linuxwall.info/doku.php/en:ressources:dossiers:n... that I think ties in nicely with OP's page.

schemathings··on Animating URLs with JavaScript and Emojis
Happened to me with Chrome on OS/X - no way back!
schemathings··on How long do neutrons live? Physicists close in on decades-old puzzle
This was what I was watching most recently .. Nucleosynthesis the origin of elements in our Solar System Jim Connelly University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6tFWA9FyGE
schemathings··on How long do neutrons live? Physicists close in on decades-old puzzle
I haven't, thanks I'll check it out.
schemathings··on How long do neutrons live? Physicists close in on decades-old puzzle
Maybe next "semester"! :) I love the misleading URL - those particle physicists have a sense of humor.
schemathings··on A Gentle Introduction to Text Summarization in Machine Learning
Interesting topic and well written .. I kicked the tires a few times with newspaper3k https://github.com/codelucas/newspaper/ it has nlp and summary methods that work pretty well, I think I'll peek under the hood to see how it's being done there. Curious to see if your method is an improvement, if so, hey they're both in python!
schemathings··on How long do neutrons live? Physicists close in on decades-old puzzle
Timely for me - I've been down the rabbit hole lately of understanding how the elements are formed and got as far as stellar nucleosynthesis, s-process which involves neutron capture making a heavier isotope and then apparently the neutron turns into a proton through a process called beta decay. (So I'm all about the lifetime of neutrons right now!)

schemathings··on 2019 Pulitzer Prize Winners
I was actually browsing the Pulitzer site after reading this year's winners list - I decided to go to the beginning and find the first reference to 'President'. Louis Seibold of New York World for an interview with Woodrow Wilson. So I google Louis Seibold and come up with this '10 journos caught fabricating" on the Politic site (which includes the Dershowitz story, that's why I'm replying to your comment !) https://www.politico.com/story/2012/07/10-journos-caught-fab...
