schappim··on Muse Glimmer: 30B-parameter model optimized for always-on local agent workflows
Old accounts can suffer takeovers too!
schappim··on Don't be a meat proxy
> "frequently contains all too plausible nonsense"

This really isn’t the case with frontier models in 2026.

I’ve found (sadly) that every time I thought the model was hallucinating, I was in fact the one who was mistaken.

schappim··on Tell HN: Amazonbot aggressively scraping my website and ignoring robots.txt
Was it actually an Amazon bot IP[1] or someone pretending to be on AWS?

schappim··on Tell HN: Amazonbot aggressively scraping my website and ignoring robots.txt
It is not just Amazon (although they're #4 on my list of bad actors)[1].

schappim··on How Google helped destroy adoption of RSS feeds (2023)
Google tried to kill RSS, but it is not dead, in fact it is still a huge part of the Open Web Initiative. There is no performance hit or real resource cost in supporting RSS. If big platforms like Shopify can do it, we can support RSS feeds (and more) too! I've recently added RSS and other alternative representations to our Rails based ecom store[1] and rails makes it super easy[1a].

If you're using Rails it is basically free to add RSS feeds w/ the 'feed' or 'rss' gems[2]. Because of this we provide RSS feeds for everything, including customer orders and their tracking.

If you want to support the Open Web Initiative[3], I'd also encourage you to support alternative representations[4] of your content (markdown, CSVs, etc), add support for ActivityPub / Fediverse directly and webhooks to your site/app.

Stay open!

schappim··on The World's 2,400 Castles
Yeah they are pretty loose w/ Castle. It is a case of "mi casa" not always "tu casa" [1].

schappim··on Ask HN: Best meeting transcription daemon for macOS?
I found MacWhisper to be great. I built and used my own solution for a couple of years before settling on MacWhisper.

I’ve also encountered some bugs. While debugging, I found that many stem from Apple’s platform itself (not MacWhisper) particularly around Metal and arbitrary object resource limits.

I can always feel hte MacWhisper bugs about to come on when you start to see little glitches like document icon previews in the Dock not rendering or screenshot utility not rendering the screenshot preview, brief flashes of magenta or green when resizing windows.

schappim··on GitHub is proud to announce that you can now obtain your public repo on CD-ROM
This seems like a wonderful way to get folk's private info. What's next, a Google Form offering to download your Gmail?
schappim··on Free the Icons
It really was Mac OS X's Vista moment.

Edit: It'll always be Mac OS X to me, not macOS.

schappim··on Om Malik has died
No black bar? I guess Om was before the mods' time.
schappim··on Half-Life 2 in a Browser
If they have halflife 2 in the browser, I wonder if this means they can do original CS in the browser too!
schappim··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
There are generally lower-cost alternatives for sourcing the third-party products they carry. Their first-party products are usually more expensive, but they're of higher quality than the competition and come with better documentation and guides.
schappim··on Cybersecurity researchers aren't happy about the guardrails on Anthropic's Fable
The guardrails are pretty tight. It is even refusing to decode morse code: https://x.com/Schappi/status/2064839631137546503?s=20

schappim··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
You'd have to imagine that the 500+ Kit's cost of goods is impacted twice, first on memory and again on solid state storage.
schappim··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
The US has a plethora of alternative authorised resellers who are lower priced:

https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/raspberry-pi-5/#:~:text...

schappim··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Microcenter (another official US reseller) sells the Pi5 16GB at a much lower price[1].

schappim··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Are Raspberry Pis (UK country of origin) exempt from the 10% baseline import tariff?
schappim··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16 GB, $350
The memory price rises are flattening. Prices are still increasing but not at the rate they previously were last year.
schappim··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Raspberry Pi’s keep selling because the software ecosystem is solid.
schappim··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Some folks might have missed that memory prices on the whole are up [1] 90% since Q4.

The memory used by the Pi 5 is up 700% [2]!

Raspberry Pi are working the issue by releasing new memory variants that are cheaper[2].

Edit: You can still walk into a Microcenter and get Pi 5 16GB for US $289!

2. https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/a-new-3gb-raspberry-pi-4-fo...

schappim··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Two things to note:

1) Apple had long term contracts for memory which will run out. Afterwards it will be very interesting to see what they do.

2) RPi uses older memory that is much much more expensive to buy in the market as manufacturers have dedicated capacity to newer formats used by AI boxes for KV caches

schappim··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16 GB, $350
This is because on a COGs basis it is memory with a side of compute.
schappim··on Is it possible to send a message in Morse code by un-following someone on x.com?
I had the same thought.

schappim··on Australia Four-Day Work Week Study Data Shows Boosted Productivity
Speaking as an Australian, our productivity has been lagging[1] compared to the US, largely due to the availability of cheap labour (attributed by economists to foreign students)[2].

I heard one economist on the ABC give the example of carwashes[2]. From the 1990s to the early 2000s, car washes in Australia were largely automated and hand-wash car washes were relatively uncommon. However, the abundance of cheap labour has since led to a proliferation of hand-wash car washes.

schappim··on Why does it look like LLMs consistently overestimate implementation time?
I've found that they declare estimates unprompted.
schappim··on Is Google down for anyone else?
Google is down for me and others in Australia. No errors on https://status.search.google.com
schappim··on OpenAI’s WebRTC problem
We have browser-based HW used inside a construction site manager’s site office behind a random FW
schappim··on OpenAI’s WebRTC problem
"WebRTC is the problem" is bait; his real claim is "WebRTC has annoying transport-layer characteristics that hurt cloud Voice AI scaling"...

Having just had to tackle this again for my own startup, I'm reminded about what you would lose by ditching WebRTC - the audio DSP pipeline, transmit side VAD, echo cancellation, noise suppression, NAT traversal maturity, codec integration, browser ubiquity etc.

schappim··on Claude Managed Agents
Folks suspect Mythos is an unaligned Opus 4.7
schappim··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
These are all non talky talky: Siri Suggestions, Siri Knowledge (Safari / Spotlight Intelligence), Siri Shortcuts (Automation, not voice), Siri Intelligence (On-device ML features), Siri Widget/Watch face… you get the idea. There was a time when “Siri” was the catch all for Smart/ML.
