scary-size··on SQLiteData: A fast, lightweight replacement for SwiftData using SQL and CloudKit
Love it! Not an iOS dev, but have built a personal app that I want to publish for macOS too. I built on top of SQLite, but didn’t want to tackle the synchronisation yet. That should solve it.

It employs a „last edit wins“ strategy for conflict resolution, which is fine in my case. Obviously could be too basic for collaborative apps.

scary-size··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
Agreed. Thinking about lifecycle, side effects and state doesn’t just go away. It’s inherent to the system you are building. Hooks is a way to address that, class lifecycle methods are another. None of these tools will magically let you ignore proper design.
scary-size··on You shouldn't salt a leech that's sucking your blood (2019)
Meta: Refreshing to see the actual advice in headline and the reasoning in first paragraph of the article. Not somewhere buried three pages down.
scary-size··on The GitHub website is slow on Safari
Noticed a similar slowdown when opening the GCP console in Safari. Especially the BigQuery editor. It's completely unusable.
scary-size··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
Fully custom made, scratching my frontend/UX itch!
scary-size··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
We recently installed a solar system on the roof, battery included. The app it comes with is okay to answer most questions. But that wont prevent me from shipping my own dashboard based on locally scraped data. Just for the sake of it. Also my homelab machine is bored.
scary-size··on Don’t use “click here” as link text (2001)
The UK's Government Digital Services make a similar recommendation [1] in their accessibility guidelines.

scary-size··on Figma files for proposed IPO
IIRC a few folks from Mapbox joined Figma years ago. They probably know their way around font rendering in WebGL (unsigned distance fields et al.).
scary-size··on Aether: A CMS That Gets Out of Your Way
Rings true! I’ve built a desktop app for building static sites to meet users (read „my dad“) where they are. Haven’t really touched it for a few years.

scary-size··on Internet usage pattern during power outage in Spain and Portugal
That one threw me off as well! As the other commentators mentioned: "Navigator.getBattery" in browsers is the culprit. "Luckily" it's not supported in Safari and Firefox.
scary-size··on Kagi Assistant is now available to all users
I can zoom just fine on mobile Safari.
scary-size··on Audiobooks vs. Printed Books: a debate as a reader and an author
I really liked John Green's take on audiobooks [1].

> ...the point of reading is to ingest someone's words and ideas in the most transparent way possible...

For some that's reading, for others that's listening.

scary-size··on Show HN: I vibecoded a 35k LoC recipe app
Agreed! That was a problem even before LLMs showed up. I found my subscription to Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen to be incredibly valuable. Bonus: You don't have to read through 15 paragraphs of SEO fluff to get to the recipe.
scary-size··on Ask HN: What is the simplest data orchestration tool you've worked with?
We’ve migrated to Flyte. Mostly using the Java/Scala API which can be a bit verbose. The official Python API is actually easy on the eyes.
scary-size··on Shunpo: Minimalist bash tool to make directory navigation a little bit faster
Agreed! „z“ and atuin (https://github.com/atuinsh/atuin) cover most of my needs.
scary-size··on Things we learned about LLMs in 2024
Not sure about 10x DAUs. Google flicked the switch on Gemini and it surfaced in pretty much every GSuite app over night.
scary-size··on Americans spend more years being unhealthy than people in any other country
Thanks for pointers. I was actually curious about this. Didn’t want to imply that child mortality is a better metric.
scary-size··on Americans spend more years being unhealthy than people in any other country
A recent podcast I listened to highlighted the US‘ child mortality rate as an indicator for the quality of their health care system.
scary-size··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
Awesome, do plan on having this translated in different languages? I'd buy a German version.
scary-size··on Reverse engineering the Ravensburger TipToi pen
Ravensburger makes all kinds of things, books, toys, and puzzles.
scary-size··on Engineers do not get to make startup mistakes when they build ledgers
I suspect this is a "small company" problem which don't sell too many different things. A larger enterprise might have a platform for connecting businesses with businesses and businesses with customers. They might sell services (subscriptions) but also one-time purchases which require different forms of revenue recognition. Those might even be split up across different revenue streams. You end up building sub-ledgers for each one of them because the ERP can't handle the scale. Oh, and you're a public company so make sure everything is SOX compliant and easy to audit. Ah, and you operate on a global scale so do all those things in different currencies for different legal entities.

There's a reason Stripe is as successful as it is. And then there's a world where a company outgrows Stripe.

There are worse career choices ("prompt engineer" LOL) than financial engineering.

scary-size··on Show HN: Minimal, customizable new tab for Chrome/Firefox
In desktop Safari, open Settings, select General, then enter a "file://..." URL in the "Homepage" text field.
scary-size··on Show HN: Minimal, customizable new tab for Chrome/Firefox
I don’t like that Chrome forces you to install an extension to modify the new tab (to such an extent). With Safari, I have it pointed at a local HTML file. That file contains a mini web app with my bookmarks. It has keyboard shortcuts, history and fuzzy search built into it.
scary-size··on Never Missing the Train Again
Nice! Much more sophisticated than my Raspi Zero version from 7 years ago [1].

scary-size··on Raspberry Pi announces branded range of NVMe SSDs and SSD kit
Buy a Pi if you want a Pi. I was just answering a very simple question. Not arguing for either side.

The parent comment already mentioned the (to me) most important point:

> x86 means you can install whatever you want

scary-size··on Raspberry Pi announces branded range of NVMe SSDs and SSD kit
It does have fans that I only ever heard spin up during a reboot. I assume you would hear them if the machine is under continuous load, mine isn't). The small dimensions allow you to stow it away pretty easily.
scary-size··on Raspberry Pi announces branded range of NVMe SSDs and SSD kit
I'm using a Lenovo ThinkCentre M715Q (Ryzen 5 PRO 3,2 GHz, SSD 256 GB, RAM 8 GB). Bought it "used" for 180 EUR last year, though it was in almost perfect condition.

Pretty happy with it so far. Runs a few cron jobs to generate some static sites, a local WordPress instance and pi-hole.

scary-size··on Kagi Snaps
If Kagi goes away, it should be relatively easy to switch to an alternative :-)
scary-size··on Ask HN: Changing my mind about JavaScript
Yes, I was about to propose this. But then again, the author wants to learn the basics without grappling with abstractions. I think zx can be a bit quirky.
