scarlehoff··on Air traffic failure caused by two locations 3600nm apart sharing 3-letter code
This is exactly what I thought q when I first read the title.
scarlehoff··on Twitter/X will let people you've blocked see your posts
You will still not see them.

If I understood correctly, the change here is that now those hundreds of e-whores and Ian Miles Cheong will be able to see your posts. So blocking is still the right strategy for what you want (for now).

scarlehoff··on alphaXiv: Open research discussion on top of arXiv
Indeed. Scirate (I didn't know about it) looks exactly like that.

Sadly, the last comments in HEP are more than 2 years old (which explains why I had never heard about it, it seems it never gained any traction)

scarlehoff··on alphaXiv: Open research discussion on top of arXiv
I believe this site is missing a very important thing, direct links to the different categories with a list of papers. This is at least how I (and I believe many others) browse arXiv. I open it up in the morning, scroll through a few categories and open a few papers that look interesting to me.

I could see myself using alphaxiv for that, and then, if there's a comment section, I might even read it, and, who knows, leave a comment. But there's no way I'm going to be changing the address or going to some other site to search for papers just to see whether there are some comments.

ps: I see the extension adds a "discussion" link to arxiv, it is a pity that it is only available for Chrome.

scarlehoff··on 2023 state of the climate Entering uncharted territory
It was above the norm until a few weeks ago. It is below now, but as someone already mentioned, the active part of the season has just begun. Hopefully it stays like this...
scarlehoff··on Ask HN: How do you find developers for open source bug bounties?
I love it too! As another commenter says, it's like a murder mistery, specially when it is not your code. The only frustrating bit (at least for me) is being just told "there's a crash around here", but once you have a way to reliably reproduce it I enjoy it quite a bit.
scarlehoff··on We're ending our Samsung collaboration
I have a Samsung phone because it is the only brand with a stylus in its flagships, but I, too, would like to end my collaboration with them.
scarlehoff··on Ask HN: Where to host my personal email
I'm currently using fastmail. I wanted something robust and wanted to avoid google. I'm happy with them.

The other option I considered was mailbox.org, but testing the interfaces of both I decided fastmail was a bit nicer to use.

scarlehoff··on Show HN: Focumon – Turn your work into a multiplayer adventure
While I guess this is said in jest, during covid times I created a (innecessarily) complex excel with all my bank accounts / sources of income with goals etc... and it really did wonders for my focus and motivation.
scarlehoff··on Ask HN: What's the deal with the "open-source SaaS" trend these days?
I echo this sentiment. I pay for Bitwarden because it is convenient _and_ I know that I will be able to keep it alive if needed.

Of course, the other side of the coin is that you have to be careful with the price point, if you move it up too much I might want to self host despite the inconvenience.

scarlehoff··on Ask HN: What happened to normal-sized smartphones?
The most incredible thing for me is that Apple decided to call these huge phones "mini".

Sadly there hasn't been a "normal sized" (for me) phone in many years. I didn't buy the mini because it was still too big. I'm now eyeing the flip phones, once they (samsung or apple, I don't care) release one with flagship specs (to accompany the flagship price) I might go for that...

scarlehoff··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
I guess this is a cultural dependent thing as well. In Mediterranean cultures I believe the preparation of the dinner (in a dinner party) would often be part of the social event.
scarlehoff··on Ask HN: What do you use for note-taking or as knowledge base?
I use this https://www.styluslabs.com/ since it is the only thing that works (offline) in both Linux and ipad for handwritten notes.

It's not as good as One Note but it the best I was able to find. If you have some better suggestion I'm all hears!
