sbmthakur··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Concerns about animal welfare are increasing and as a result are being factored into infrastructure projects. Better late than never.

Also it would also avoid such incidents.

Infrastructure projects, whether big or small should always factor in local ecosystem. For example, highways built with with overpasses and underpasses are a great help to animals.

sbmthakur··on Write Software in Latin (2025) [video]
Such corrections become even more important in the age of LLMs where we're gonna see more fake stuff. I honestly thought this is some kind of a joke but it turned out be a talk.
sbmthakur··on LinkedIn Feed Blocker
I'd built a small extension for myself to ignore posts that included words like thrilled, excited, and so on.
sbmthakur··on An Englishwoman who sketched India before photography took hold
Reading that one now. I finished The Anarchy before that and it was a great intro to the 18th century and how it made the ground fertile for upcoming colonial period.
sbmthakur··on Running local models is good now
Someone was able to run gemma-4-26B-A4B on an i5-8500 with 32 gb ram with NO GPU. Granted this is an extreme example these MoE models are value for money for a lot of use cases.

sbmthakur··on Running local models is good now
I could run it on 7900 XT with 64k context. You could run it more comfortably on a 24 gb vram.
sbmthakur··on What happens to an economy when it's too hot to work?
Wonder how much of a temperature difference is due to El Nino? As a kid I used to spend some time in central India during summers(temp: 40-43C). It helped that schools used to be shut around that time and expectedly, people would spend as little time outside as possible. Also, it's the hot winds that get you(usually more prevalent in the countryside).
sbmthakur··on Texas is America Inc's new centre of gravity
Y'all are welcome to Washington if you can stand the gloom.
sbmthakur··on There is a shadow hanging over this Fable thing
Even without those incentives, the messaging is clear: you don't want your inference to be shut arbitrarily. Export controls are nothing new but a lot of people have underestimated them due to globalization and the general nature of software. This is a good opportunity for entities around the world to get their setup going.
sbmthakur··on Uber president says AI spending is getting 'harder to justify'
Affordable inference will be around longer if more Big tech companies cap their AI sending.
sbmthakur··on NimConf 2026: Dates Announced, Registrations Open
One of my concern is LLMs are going to generate a lot of low quality code for languages that do not have sufficient discussions on forums like Stackoverflow.
sbmthakur··on Ask HN: My AI app builder has users, not buyers – why?
Have you checked where do your paid tier offerings stack up to free tier offerings of your competitors?
sbmthakur··on History LLMs: Models trained exclusively on pre-1913 texts
Someone suggested a nice thought experiment - train LLMs on all Physics before quantum physics was discovered. If the LLM can see still figure out the latter then certainly we have achieved some success in the space.
sbmthakur··on Ziglings: Learn the Zig programming language by fixing tiny broken programs
Looks nice! I would love to see a resource that teaches you Zig by writing tests. Something similar for Go was posted a few years ago.

sbmthakur··on India orders smartphone makers to preload state-owned cyber safety app
> IRCTC is a private company.

Lol, at least do your research before writing random things.

sbmthakur··on India orders smartphone makers to preload state-owned cyber safety app
From what I know, religions except Christianity and Islam are generally grouped under Hinduism for most things(marriage law for instance) and by default you're considered a Hindu(you can't be officially an atheist).
sbmthakur··on India orders smartphone makers to preload state-owned cyber safety app
I don't think the government is going to treat it like a local district website. IRCTC, UPI, e-Filing portal seem to be working fine for the most part, so pretty sure they can make this work eventually.
sbmthakur··on Okta's NextJS-0auth troubles
Why if I may ask?
sbmthakur··on Project Euler
Hackerrank also used to host(still has?) PE problems with additional test cases.
sbmthakur··on YouTube Is Down
Playback fails once/twice, but eventually runs for me.
sbmthakur··on What happens to college towns after peak 18-year-old?
The supply of foreign students does depends on their career prospects in the US(which is getting worse at least in tech) and also the current administration is weighing policies that would cap intake of foreign students.

sbmthakur··on Getting More Strategic
Thank you! My initial hunch was to treat it as a self-help book but it does look something better than that.

Can anyone recommend a good summary?

sbmthakur··on An engineering history of the Manhattan Project
Learned about that book from HN, so thanks HN. Of late, I've been reading The Alchemy of Air which revolves around Haber-Bosch process and it's been a delight so far. Highly recommend if you love a mix of non-fiction, history & science.

I was doing Masters in the US from 2021-23 and do recall getting their emails to my University email.
sbmthakur··on The World War Two bomber that cost more than the atomic bomb
Didn't the Soviet invasion of Manchuria also boxed them in? Some Historians(Paul Hamn for once) have said that was the primary reason for the surrender.
sbmthakur··on Ask HN: How did Soham Parekh get so many jobs?
With due respect, they probably just asked leetcode-esque and sys design questions.
sbmthakur··on Helix: A Modern, High-Performance Language
> Both Rust and Zig lack comprehensive OOP support, which is essential for certain domains like AI or game development.

Just curious, what benefit OOP offers over other paradigms in AI dev?
