sbelskie··on Blood test that finds 50 types of cancer is accurate enough to be rolled out
I’m not sure I understand what you mean. It seems like you’re framing my motivation as not wanting people to know that they are sick and being willing to trade peoples lives to achieve that outcome, which I don’t think is at all what my above comment says.
sbelskie··on Blood test that finds 50 types of cancer is accurate enough to be rolled out
> The test, which is also being piloted by NHS England in the autumn, is aimed at people at higher risk of the disease including patients aged 50 or older.

Does anyone know if the study was performed with a population that matches this description? Curious if the rates are in a general population or this higher risk group.

A big part of this is the fact that learning information (about a disease or condition) early is often NOT the same thing as learning information that will change a patient’s clinical outcome.

“On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.”
sbelskie··on .NET 6 Preview 5
Carter is probably a better choice than Nancy nowadays, but in any case the new minimal api features coming in 6 look to provide a really excellent way to build elegant web APIs without large framework overhead.

An absolutely terrifying breach of international laws and norms.
sbelskie··on Consumer Prices in U.S. Increase by Most Since 2009
“The Labor Department’s data showed a 10% surge in the cost of used vehicles that accounted for more than a third of the increase in the overall CPI.”
sbelskie··on Consumer prices increase 2.6 percent
When will it happen?
sbelskie··on Consumer prices increase 2.6 percent
If those numbers were right coffee would be $25 a cup. I can understand thinking CPI understates things, but the math for average inflation of 6-10% for decades just doesn’t add up.
sbelskie··on Consumer prices increase 2.6 percent
Yea this is confusing. I thought it was maybe published accidentally a day early but this is just last months stuff.

I’m having trouble finding where the numbers for severe reactions are given. Can you point me in the right direction?

There are bad outcomes other than death.
sbelskie··on The Ultimate Guide to Inflation
It was an honest question. It didn’t mess up any googling. I just don’t know anything about the particular legal structure/origin/whatever of the court you brought up, and so I had no way to know if the slight difference in name was meaningful or not.
sbelskie··on The Ultimate Guide to Inflation
I’m not a lawyer or a scholar on these matters, so can you help point me to the Court of Claims you mean? The only one I can find no longer exists: “The Court of Claims was a federal court that heard claims against the United States government. It was established in 1855, renamed in 1948 to the United States Court of Claims (67 Stat. 226), and abolished in 1982.”

Is your claim that the Fed intentionally causes this cycle? I’m not sure I understand what their supposed goal is here.

How would the Fed fulfilling its mandate give anyone a case for recovering their trading losses?
sbelskie··on The Ultimate Guide to Inflation
You’re correct that the recent uptick is unprecedented, but given that the other graph (shared by Nobel prize winning economist) shows no stable relationship between M2 and inflation, why does it matter? He might be wrong and you might be right, but that graph alone doesn’t tell that story.

Unless paintings are different than other assets commonly donated (e.g. stocks), this doesn’t sound right. If I donate a stock that has appreciated in value, I pay no capital gains tax and am still able to deduct the full market value of the stock (up to certain limits).
sbelskie··on Jaguar Land Rover to suspend output due to chip shortage
Isn’t it their first plug-in hybrid? Seems like they could be testing the waters and ended up with way more demand than they anticipated. I guess we will see in a year or two if they can ramp up.

sbelskie··on Study: 11% of Americans Think HTML Is an STD (2014)
I think it’s more like 11% of people both don’t know what HTML and when prompted to pick from 3 options guessed that it was an STD.
sbelskie··on F# is gaining independence from .NET
How are these points specific to OO vs. FP, instead of just paradigm I know vs. paradigm I don’t?

F# code, from my somewhat limited experience, seems to almost always be organized logically (top to bottom, types separated from functions) using well-established patterns. Obviously if you decide to write a bunch of classes and mutating code in F# when more idiomatic approaches would work, it’s going to get hairy.

I feel like I’m missing your point.

sbelskie··on Cyclic dependencies are evil (2013)
I’m having a hard time understanding why you think F# is unable to handle the domain model presented.
sbelskie··on Cyclic dependencies are evil (2013)
I’ve played around with F# over the years, but have only recently started getting into seriously. The top down nature of dependencies (both within a given file and for the files within a project) is a little odd at first, but once you get used to it feels quite natural.

If nothing else, it encourages (somewhat) common ways of structuring projects and avoids a lot of bike shedding about separation of concerns and project structure I encounter in C#.
