sbelskie··on The End of Silicon Valley (Bank)
In what way does online banking change things?
sbelskie··on Mailed asthma, cancer, erectile drugs are seized the most, despite opioid claims
> The FDA said it found 33 packages of opioids and no fentanyl sent by mail in 2022 out of nearly 53,000 drug shipments its inspectors examined at international mail facilities. That’s about 0.06% of examined packages.

sbelskie··on Labeling of Plant-Based Milk Alternatives
Why would producers be unable to call a product by its commonly used named absent evidence of any real confusion or significant harm?
sbelskie··on Health concerns mounting as animals become sick after train derailment
I’ve seen a handful of national media outlets cover it without paying any particular attention. What level of attention should this story be getting?
sbelskie··on Crypto is the first question on IRS Form 1040 in 2022 [pdf]
A non-exhaustive list can exclude things (the list from the IRS excludes fiat currency) and so obviously can narrow a definition.
sbelskie··on Crypto is the first question on IRS Form 1040 in 2022 [pdf]
The irs provides a non-exhaustive definition of digital asset which I think seems to provide the needed narrowing of definition.

sbelskie··on Crypto is the first question on IRS Form 1040 in 2022 [pdf]
Capital losses can exceed capital gains up to $3k per year with some ability to carry over losses into subsequent years. There are also some particulars about the order of deducting long/short term losses against long/short term gains IIRC.
sbelskie··on Hypermedia Systems
Looks like it.

From htmx’s twitter:

> the book was initially in contract w/ a tech publisher, but was dropped because they didn't feel there was a big enough market

sbelskie··on What’s so great about functional programming anyway?
Does SQL CLR support .NET Core/.NET 5+ or just framework?
sbelskie··on Gross domestic product is a misleading measure of national success (2014)
By this do you mean that GDP is being gamed?
sbelskie··on Microsoft FY23 Q1 Earnings
I’m sure they will be red but MSFT has PE of ~25 which is pretty boring for a “growth” tech stock. AMZN has a PE of >100 and is one of the few remaining outliers among big tech companies. The rest are much closer though not exactly equal to boring blue chip PE ratios.
sbelskie··on Nobel Prize in Economics Awarded to Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond, Philip Dybvig
What about his 1980s work on bank runs and the Great Depression do you find so objectionable?
sbelskie··on US National Debt Tops $31T
Where do you see a tripling? Are you mixing up the lines and their respective x-axis?
sbelskie··on US National Debt Tops $31T
I think the cost to service the loans is much more relevant: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=Utqq
sbelskie··on US National Debt Tops $31T
Much more relevant is the cost of servicing the debt which has trended down/flat over time. Recent rising interest rates will change that somewhat but I see no real area of concern.

sbelskie··on Why does a U.S. presidential candidate need to be 35 years old? (2016)
I’ve never heard that interpretation before. Do you have links to further explanation? It doesn’t seem all that intuitive to me.
sbelskie··on US Inflation Tops Forecasts, Cementing Odds of Big Fed Hike
Given that CPI was flat last month, I’m curious what you mean by 27th straight month?
sbelskie··on [dead]
> Among ivermectin users, 33,971 (29.8% of users) used irregularly (up to 60mg) and 8,325 (7.3%) used regularly (more than 180mg). The remaining 71,548 participants (62.9%) used intermediate dioses (between 60mg and 180mg) and were not included for analysis.

Anyone see a good reason why the excluded the majority of the people who actually used ivermectin from the study? Excluding a big chunk like that from middle of the dose range seems suspicious unless I’m missing something.

sbelskie··on The danger of license plate readers in post-Roe America
Is there a bill you can point to in which the Democrats have recognized “billions and billions of the genders that the younger generations think exist”?
sbelskie··on The danger of license plate readers in post-Roe America
I don’t really understand what you mean about keeping “gender politics” out a national law on abortion. By “leave out late term” you mean disallow it, leave it up to states (many of whom will outlaw it and have even when their are severe risks to the mother), or something else?
sbelskie··on Go generics are not bad
C# is getting support for generic math in 11 with the addition of static abstract members (including operators) for interfaces.
sbelskie··on The danger of license plate readers in post-Roe America
Do you have a “reasonable” bill in mind? I can’t really see much of anything getting 60 votes in the senate.
sbelskie··on The economy added 372,000 jobs in June, outpacing expectations
Isn’t the jobs number always seasonally adjusted? Plus, this is above consensus expectations; economists were not unaware that it was summer when making these estimates.
sbelskie··on Mastering Nim – now available on Amazon
I like to think the author is thanking them for their efforts despite said efforts having produced nothing of value.
sbelskie··on We need a flowchart editor that doesn't give you carpal tunnel
I really like mermaid but I have found larger flow charts often make odd rendering decisions (especially with sub graphs). Otherwise it’s incredible.
sbelskie··on 36% of high earners are living paycheck to paycheck
What is that floor? I’m pretty skeptical of that claim given how cheap houses are where I live (relative to the rest of the country).
sbelskie··on VC Meltdown
Source on the nearly everyone part of this? Seems hard to believe.
sbelskie··on The new and upgraded Framework Laptop
It looks to me like the links for DIY and prebuilt are reversed.
sbelskie··on Congress urged to ease immigration for foreign science talent
Sorry, I meant this more in terms of state residency. Remote stuff obviously makes the question more complicated, but I meant currently existing residents of CA vs. people from other states who would move to California and also pay state income tax, similar to the US immigration question.
