saycheese··on Do Robots Deserve Rights? What If Machines Become Conscious?
Simply saying that AI will be able to observe, understand, etc. more than humans and at some point the gap will be so wide that to AI the degree of consciousness that humans are able in experience will likely seem trivial to AI.
saycheese··on Do Robots Deserve Rights? What If Machines Become Conscious?
Problem is AI will not be human, which makes comparing how humans treat human, since humans need other humans, AI will not.
saycheese··on Do Robots Deserve Rights? What If Machines Become Conscious?
Opposite is likely true, AI will like reach the point at which it questions if humans are really conscious.

saycheese··on Google Site Search will be completely shut down by April 1, 2018
Per the Google's statement: "On April 1, 2017, Google will discontinue sales of the Google Site Search. All new purchases and renewals must take place before this date. The product will be completely shut down by April 1, 2018."

If I were you and you really had already finished the Google Search dev work you referenced, I would pay for service as soon as possible for the duration up until April 1, 2018. Use the service, see how user users are really using it, then use what you've learned to plan for the future.

saycheese··on Why I Don’t Talk to Google Recruiters
There are vast amounts of basic information in the world that provides opportunities. In turn, knowing that information provides the opportunity to learn new information that is now "basic" as a result of learning the prior information.

To believe any concept is so basic everyone should know it seems unlikely, since if everyone knows it the odds of being able to find someone that knows it are high and the odds of gaining value from it are small.

saycheese··on Ask HN: HN Dups, Randomness, Herding, ETC
Not confused. Saying that new/top adds bias - that a blind sampling would help solve.

Reference to dups provides proof that "top" stories are being missed, since one dup might have 100+ upvotes, while another will have just a few upvotes and no comment saying it's a dup; meaning to me the only difference is the volume of comments/votes between the two.

Beyond that, I've seen research that shows seeding a submission with even just a few comments/upvotes greatly increases the odds of future traction.

Point is to reduce noise to signal ratio.

saycheese··on Ask HN: How can I get notifications of replies to my HN post?
True, though this is not the same thin as a notification; Stack Exchange does something like this when you're logged in.
saycheese··on Time to Encrypt the Cloud
Not sure it means the internet is broken, but would mean SSL is broken.
saycheese··on Ask HN: How can I get notifications of replies to my HN post?
HN has does not sure this, neither while your on the site or via email.

If you're not able to hack hack to together a solution, then you might be able to find someone that's created one - just don't use any that require your password to provide the service.

>> "The usage of HTTPS in combination with HSTS can reduce the effectiveness of QI. Also using a content delivery network (CDN) that offers low latency can make it very difficult for the QI packet to win the race with the real server."

>> "including everyone actually means excluding some"

Just to be clear, do you mean "everyone" could not fit in the space, by being all inclusive that some would self exclude, etc.?

saycheese··on Free charging stations can hack your phone, here's how to protect yourself
As the article says, if you assume that's are that can be extracted from a device, it's only a matter of time before you realize it is not; at which point, you may have already been hacked.
saycheese··on FCC chief wants smartphones’ hidden FM radios turned on
FCC will not step in to require FM chips be accessible on smartphones that have them; currently only 44% of the top selling smartphones enable their FM chips, here's a list of the ones that do: http://nextradioapp.com/supported-devices/

Expecting everyone within a group to be reasonable is not reasonable.
saycheese··on Creating photorealistic images with neural networks and a Gameboy Camera

saycheese··on Demo of Short-Range Wireless Power Transfer
Core issue with the solution appears to be that the faraday cage used by the room would require any wireless wifi/cell access points be inside the room, otherwise they would be blocked.
saycheese··on Demo of Short-Range Wireless Power Transfer
TLDR: Demo shows that in a 54 m3 specially designed room that it is possible deliver power to small coil receivers in nearly any position with 40% to 95% efficiency — and 1900 watts can be transmitted to a coil receiver enabling safe and ubiquitous wireless power.

saycheese··on How to get rich in America
Here's a quick lookup for US annual household income ranks/percentile based on US Census Bureau data:

http://money.cnn.com/calculator/pf/income-rank/

As of 2014, to be in the top 1% of income earners by household, you needed to make roughly $420,000 a year.

saycheese··on How to get rich in America
Once was speaker before a few hundred recent grads and asked if they wanted to be a billionaire. Only a few raised there hands.

My theory is most people want more stuff, few really want to be billionaires, or even just part of the 1%.

saycheese··on Warren Buffett’s Best Investment
>> "the scale of these problems really requires the cooperation of governments"

Right, it's my understanding that orginally the Gates foundation tried to do it without working with the governments governing the people they wanted to help, but were unable to make it work.

saycheese··on We carpooled every day to get to know our customers
My experience is the number one strength a founder has their passion. It's really not something that can easily be copied and given the vast amounts of opportunities in the world, hiring someone that really knows how to map that passion to a business model and attack the assumption has zero to do with being an entrepreneur, it's just another skill. Core issue is if the founder is not learning from the process and owning it.

Anyway, it's a topic that's interesting to me given how bad most startups are at it.
