Interesting, are you referring to this contract:

What does not add up?
saycheese··on An 85-year old millionaire hides $1M treasure in the Rocky Mountains (2016)
"Based on a true story" is not the same thing as a documentary; it's assumed that aparts of the story are not real; how much is made up is up to the writer, not the reader.

Treasure hunting is a lot of fun, though from experience if you really do find something, it's not always a good thing for the relationships of those involved.

Always have a written agreement prior to starting with anyone involved before starting; that is the search crew, land owners, etc.

Thanks, though I have no idea what the "Fargo treasure" is, so I'm not able to comment on it.

Do you have links to it, proof it's fake, the related death, etc.?

(Attempted to Google "Fargo treasure" but it appeared there were a number of different Fargo treasures.)

EDIT: Link http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/kumiko-the-treasure-hunter/t...

Yes, I would hope it's obvious that a fictional treasure is not real. Difference between your example and mine is the source is claiming it's real, aware people are dying, and spending money to help look for missing people.

Assure you that there are ways to deal with Fenn dieing and still require the party finding it to make contact with someone to claim the prize; in fact, Fenn planned this when he thought he would die from cancer.

Worth noting people have died looking for it, which makes me believe the claim is likely real, especially given Fenn has charted private helicopters to help search for those lost and known to be searching for the treasure:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenn_treasure

Fenn hasn't been out in the Rocky Mountains, north of Santa Fe, to check on the chest since he hid it, but he knows it's still there.

My guess is that the prize is not inside, but with Fenn; which explains why he checks to see if someone has found it and requests they provide proof of what is inside.

Fenn has more clues posted here: http://www.oldsantafetradingco.com/the-thrill-resource-page

From the point a spammer is identify until their interaction with the system becomes a burden to deal with, it's better to not let them know it's known they a spammer. Craigslist does this by "ghosting" postings that's flagged as spam; that is the spammer sees the posting as live, maybe even gets an automated reply to see how/if they respond, but the general public does not see the posting.
saycheese··on Keep the Internet Open
There is no contraction, engaging the world, especially those that may not agree with you, is potentially dangerous and if you're afraid to do so, then don't.
saycheese··on Keep the Internet Open
Right, one is addressing a single person that's said they afraid of talking in public for fear of blowback and another is directed to the Bay Area and greater tech community asking them to engage the world.

What am I missing?

saycheese··on Reverse Engineering the Hacker News Ranking Algorithm
Realize they are used as downvotes which is why using them as part of the ranking system makes no sense. Adding a downvote button also makes no sense. If you see something you do not want to see, but others do want to see it, click "hide" and move on.
saycheese··on Keep the Internet Open
Be afraid all you want, doesn't matter to me.

Thiel knew he'd be attacked, took a risk, and there's zero reason to believe he's not happy with the results; if you think Thiel cares what the "Bay Area" thinks, I'd be interested in your reasoning.

Uber's not even worth covering, they're currently a cluster F$&@ waiting to happen and the idea that it was somehow born of talking with Trump is what it is.

Bay Area and for the matter the greater tech community needs to engage the world, not withdraw from it.

saycheese··on Keep the Internet Open
You mean like Elon, Thiel, etc.? If so seems to me as if they're all doing just fine. [1]

Beyond that, point of engaging Trump would be on a topic I would assume everyone agrees is important - and if you think hidding and hoping things will magically get better, well, good luck!

saycheese··on Keep the Internet Open
Given Elon & Thiel are both in contact with Trump, if you haven't already done so, it would be worth mentioning it directly to both that this is important to you.

For that matter, maybe this is a chance to you yourself reach out to Trump on an issue and invite him to meet at the White House or come to the Bay Area to meet the next batch of YC startups.

Interesting reviewing the list of organizations that signed the letter sent to the FCC by the ACLU & EFF on keeping the internet open: http://www.commoncause.org/policy-and-litigation/letters-to-...

Really makes you wonder what's going on, since Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc. are nowhere to be found on the list.

saycheese··on Ask HN: Which Berkeley Courses Should I Archive?
Anyone looking to create a personal archive for any YouTube content should look into these scripts: https://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/

They're very easy to use and well documented.

saycheese··on Reverse Engineering the Hacker News Ranking Algorithm
Flags are for content that's spam, off-topic, inappropriate. While you might claim that the content is dated, it would likely be better to post a comment providing a more recent source for the topic, not upvote the submission, and allow the community to decide for themselves what the best source of information is on the topic.
saycheese··on Reverse Engineering the Hacker News Ranking Algorithm
To be fair, "the feed" (assume you mean the new feed) is populated by the hive, it's just not sorted by votes or any other filter; of course unless the mods remove/hide a submission for some reason.
saycheese··on Reverse Engineering the Hacker News Ranking Algorithm
Anyone interested in the topic of HN's ranking algorithm should look through the HN's submission archives:

For example: https://medium.com/hacking-and-gonzo/how-hacker-news-ranking...

saycheese··on Reverse Engineering the Hacker News Ranking Algorithm
Understand though I could easily see spammers using the data and getting 500 really should not take more than a month if you post a handful of comments a day; for example: 25 days, 5 comments a day, average of 4 upvotes per comment.

Worth noting with a rep of 500+ HN users are able to downvote comments.

saycheese··on Reverse Engineering the Hacker News Ranking Algorithm
It would be nice if there was non-filtered view of HN available for users with a rep above 500, much like the "show dead" option for user comments that have been hidden. Basically allowing the submissions to be placed in the submission rank as if their ranking was not pinged due to users flagging the submission.
saycheese··on Reverse Engineering the Hacker News Ranking Algorithm
Being old is not a reason to flag a submission, at best appending the title with the year would be all that would be required.
saycheese··on YC Legal (Updated: February 2017)
Are these the legal terms applied to using HN? If so, then they should be linked to from HN's footer.
saycheese··on Opaque drug pricing in the U.S.
Worth noting this was "Issued by Global Policy & International Public Affairs, Pfizer Inc." (a large pharmaceuticals company) in October 2015 and there is an odd phrase in the footer that reads "Do Not Detail."
saycheese··on MIT Media Lab Disobedience Award
As you likely know, but some may not, grants have legally enforceable constraints on how the funds will be spent, and often require proof that the funds were spent as required; not spending the funds as required might result in civil and criminal legal complaints being filed.

The funds presented to the winner of the award are not a work grant. There are no strings attached as far as I am able to tell by the rules or hidden agendas via the applications; for example, "If you are the winner, how might the $250k prize make a difference?"

Basically, to have expectations of how the winner might spend the funds is what it is, but to state it's basically a work grant is inaccurate.

saycheese··on MIT Media Lab Disobedience Award
As someone that actively engages in disobedience it is disheartening that they'd award $250k to a single winner instead of $50k to five, $10k to twenty-five, etc.

So many people struggle to make a difference, no matter how small, and being honored for their efforts, when it's most likely that it rarely if ever happens in real life, would be inspiring to them to keep up what they're doing.

For those interested in reading about the original post covering in detail the thoughts behind the award, see this blog post:
