saycheese··on Why did old PCs have key locks?
To expand on that, very old computers were the size of rooms and I would be very surprised if those rooms were not locked.
saycheese··on The Document Which Used to Be Called the MIT Lockpicking Guide (1992)
Yes, picking is a small percent, but failing to use the lock on a door or window is the number one way entry is gained [1]; point being if people locked doors, the numbers would likely be much higher given most burglars use one of the external doors at some point during a burglary.

saycheese··on Apple is betting on augmented reality
"Polish" is irrelevant as it relates to realism - what matters is people believe it adds value realitive to the cost to them, which includes the social impact it has on them.
saycheese··on Apple is betting on augmented reality
IBM Simon was the first phone with a touchscreen in 1992.
saycheese··on Apple is betting on augmented reality
AR is not only about eyes, nor does it require realistic overlay - all that's required is it's sync'd to reality and augments reality.
saycheese··on Using legacy ‘human-centric’ traffic surveillance systems for machine learning
Seems like it would make more sense to use the feeds to extract the vechicals into a simulation the would make the data cleaner, more universal, etc.
saycheese··on Apple is betting on augmented reality
Speculation is rising that Apple will add 3D sensing to give the phone a sense of depth to be used for augmented reality applications.

3D sensing is not a new technology and was initially adopted by Microsoft‘s Kinect and Lenovo‘s Tango-enabled Phab2 Pro.

saycheese··on Apple is betting on augmented reality
Being first is irrelevant when it comes to being mainstream. Apple's iPod was not the first mobile digital music player, nor was the iPhone the first smartphone.

Being novel also isn't that important. For example, Apple's white earphones played a major role in getting the public to see that their devices were mainstream, but there was nothing truly novel about them.

saycheese··on Apple is betting on augmented reality
AR will become mainstream at the point people see it as the norm in public.

Apple's core advantage is that they set the standard for mobile smart devices and consumer will follow them if they're able to gain momentum.

Question at that point swings back to how they'll try to do it, which becomes highly speculative.

If I had to guess, they'll morph the iPhone to a AR device like the morphed the iPod to a phone; meaning the first step is to add AR to the iPhone and gain traction.

saycheese··on Google Glass is getting a second life in the manufacturing industry
>> "I just don't think it makes sense to put something on there that has no practical purpose"

The purpose is clear, that being if the camera is recording.

saycheese··on Google Glass is getting a second life in the manufacturing industry
Right, which is why it failed, Google tried to be sneaky, it was inappropriate, and instead of realizing they needed to figure out a way around the issue, they abandoned it.

Another option and even more trustworthy would have been a camera cover that was usable & durable and clearly & visibly expressed the status of the camera.

saycheese··on They Used To Last 50 Years
Branding is the real enemy of quality, as it makes consumers lazy.

Consumers might say they care about quality, but ask them to define it beyond "it lasts" and they will likely say brand.

For example, take searching the web, what's the best search engine and how often do you think people compare the options they have and the quality of the search results?

saycheese··on YC AI
Right, the ground truth is the existing human labor - and yes, run sims at scale makes sense, but if you don't build and model using the real world you'll rapidly get a solution that only shows the sims errors in modeling the world. All the best robots I've seen run sims, but very narrowly and with a well defined problem to refine via a well designed model.

Offer stands to help you, but given the deadline for the next batch is days away, you would need to let me know as soon as possible via a comment, then I'd contact you via email.

saycheese··on YC AI
Thanks, I only do outbound contact; if anyone wants me to contacts them, simply let me know and I'll be in touch with 24-hours.
saycheese··on YC AI
Maybe or maybe you could just model what the workers already do, predict what they should do, and dynamically provide feedback, simulation, etc.
saycheese··on YC AI
It doesn't have to be an arm; for example Kiva, the robotics company Amazon bought for $775 million in 2012, just found a better way to move parts around in a warehouse; pretty basic idea and system too.

If you or for that matter anyone want a cofounder to apply to YC for AI, happy to help.

saycheese··on SecureDrop Documentation
Documentation contains a lot of operational security recommendations even down to hardware recommendations.

PDF of the docs maybe found in the menu; here's a link too: https://media.readthedocs.org/pdf/securedrop/stable/securedr...

saycheese··on Google Glass is getting a second life in the manufacturing industry
Beyond me why Google just simply did not add a red LED on the consumer edition to show if the camera was recording in an attempt to address the privacy concerns many people had.
saycheese··on Palantir blocked China’s CDH Investments from buying stock, says a lawsuit
At the point a single venture is worth billions, they should be required to disclose their core financials, stockholders, holders, risks, etc.
saycheese··on Michael Seibel, CEO of YC, is doing an AMA
Has YC thought about doing a campus per batch and would it allow a startup to do this for YC as launching point for further growth both inside and outside of YC?

saycheese··on Circular Runways [video]
Appears to be an idea that's been around before [1] - might be interesting to build a smaller scale one that's explicitly for drone swarms.

saycheese··on Dropbox accounts created after Oct. 2012 won't have a public folder
Maybe here are the policies from 2009:

https://web.archive.org/web/20091228083110/http://www.dropbo...

And the policies from end of 2012:

https://web.archive.org/web/20121216094126/https://www.dropb...

That said, given the Terms of Use say they were last modified on March 26, 2012 — it appears possible that is not the reason.

saycheese··on Why your startup should be a Delaware C-Corp, not an LLC
With more than a handful of upvotes and my past experience dealing with similar situations, it's neither obvious, nor unreasonable.

Beyond that, while it's clearly at your option, as far as I'm able to recall anytime you've had a submission related to you pop-up on HN you've disclosed your affiliation.

saycheese··on Dropbox accounts created after Oct. 2012 won't have a public folder
>> "Dropbox accounts created after October 4, 2012 won't have a Public folder."

Given the initial release was in June 2007, does anyone know why this only applies to accounts created after October 4, 2012?

saycheese··on An 85-year old millionaire hides $1M treasure in the Rocky Mountains (2016)
Fargo's credits state:

"The persons and events portrayed in this production are fictitious."

saycheese··on Why your startup should be a Delaware C-Corp, not an LLC
"Andrew Gust" is a real name, there's zero reason not to disclose the affiliation, and the fact he himself has disclosed it before points to him understanding it's potientally not obvious.
saycheese··on Why your startup should be a Delaware C-Corp, not an LLC
A past comment from your profile included "Andrew from Gust" within it on a submission about Gust. [1]

Please update your HN profile to disclose any affiliations you have with Gust.
