What I’ve come to understand about myself is that I am a multidisciplinary bridge builder.

I thrive both in high perspective and in a place of deep focus. My practices boil down to building understanding between realities. And at best, presence.

I LOVE usability testing and conceptual modeling and getting people started with these.

Learning and observing people to understand what makes them tick is at the core of all I do. I want to enable people on the mission to do their best work. I have a masters in computer science & cognitive psychology of UX, and love to do UI work that is rooted in real human needs.

I have grounded my work in commercial applications as well as practicing UX work and software implementation in open source communities. I feel ethics must be at the core of what UX pros do, and I am well versed in having nuanced conversations to keep teams aligned.

A qualified vocational teacher and connection & body awareness coach, I am also available to support people on their path to what’s real and expansive for them.

This names something valuable and frames it in an original way. It expressed caring for younger generations and encourages effort to meet the young with presence. It gives practical advice on how to practice attention. In present time this is enormously valuable.

I see it being flagged in realtime, please wake up HN.

savolai··on Netflix Animation Studios Joins the Blender Development Fund as Corporate Patron
These are all products the ux direction of which is likely influenced more by corporate power dynamics. Sure, uxers are involved, the real power they have is a different question.

Everyone’s got their preferences, quality of ux is by definition subjective. That is what makes these discussions hard. Naming any examples will always have ”nah i don’t like that product” as counterpoint.

An equally weird trope us UX practitioners dumbing down UIs. It simply depends on who we are designing for.

As soon as developers actively hang out with real users in real life and genuinely observe them without intervening, i’m all for oss projects without uxers.

Disclaimer: did my master’s thesis on OSS UX.

savolai··on Meditation as Wakeful Relaxation: Unclenching Smooth Muscle
One could claim it is a self reflection tool where the point is not the claims at face value, but the value lies in the activity itself of focusing, of directing your mind to look at and feel your existence from a different/wide perspective. Which is true about many pedagogical tools.

The concrete results would thus be highly specific to the subject and their learning process on what they themselves deem relevant.

Here’s a video: https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=13872580061100...

I’ve seen repeated reports where OneDrive and Windows 11 enable cloud sync or folder backup without clear consent. People describe cases where Desktop/Documents/Pictures start syncing automatically, eating up free quota, and later deleting or moving files in ways users didn’t intend. Some users even wake up to full sync turned on and then can’t easily revert it.

That behavior feels like a dark pattern: defaults nudging toward cloud-storage upsells and confusing opt-outs that can result in data confusion or loss. Is this intentional design at Microsoft or just sloppy UX engineering?

savolai··on What you need to know before touching a video file
Also, for context: ’Some truth here, but it’s overstated.

Firefox does WebRTC fine. AV1 works, simulcast works, calls and streaming work. Chrome still leads on performance tweaks and extra APIs, but “very bad” is just wrong.

DevTools aren’t “much worse.” Different, less popular, sometimes better (CSS, network). Chrome wins mainly because everyone targets it first.

API gaps are real but the list is sloppy. WebGPU and WebTransport exist in Firefox now, just behind on advanced bits. Periodic Background Sync barely matters. WebRTC support keeps closing the gap.

Missing stuff like Web Serial, Badging, fuller Web Share? True, and mostly intentional.

HDR is the weakest claim that actually holds. AV1 decode exists, but HDR support still feels half-done.

TL;DR: Firefox lags Chromium in breadth and polish, not in core modern web capability. Calling it bad for video or modern apps doesn’t match reality.” ’

savolai··on What you need to know before touching a video file
Oh I thought you meant actual chromium browser.

Those seem rather marginal features from my pov but of course once you need them, you need them, I guess.

savolai··on Marmot – A distributed SQLite server with MySQL wire compatible interface

savolai··on Linux is good now
Linux desktops have felt flaky for me for a few years now. I’m trying to figure out how much of that is bad choices vs real problems.

Ubuntu’s default desktop felt unstable in a macOS VM. Dual-booting on a couple of HP laptops slowed to a crawl after installing a few desktop apps, apparently because they pulled in background services. What surprised me was how quickly the system became unpleasant to use without any obvious “you just broke X” moment.

My current guess: not Linux in general, but heavy defaults (GNOME, Snap, systemd timers), desktop apps dragging in daemons, and OEM firmware / power-management quirks that don’t play well with Linux. Server Linux holds up because everything stays explicit. Desktop distros hide complexity and don’t give much visibility when things start to rot.

Does this line up with others’ experience? If yes, what actually works long-term? Minimal bases, immutable distros, avoiding certain package systems, strict service hygiene, specific hardware?

savolai··on Show HN: One clean, developer-focused page for every Unicode symbol
+1 The small font size combined with the big black box with green arrow that, at least on my iphone xs, covers part of the symbol itself, makes it really hard to see the symbols themselves on front page.
