saul_pako··on What to care about in a job
It's not hard to get a job, by to get a job that you can be sure to still have tomorrow when you wake up is another cup of tea. Working on day to day contracts and filling in for ordinaries does not grant you and your family a stable income. The physically demanding aspect of nursing for example often lead to premature retirement due to injuries or worn out joints and backs. The security aspect for me reflects the ability to stay healthy and being able to continue working in the long run. It also reflects the need for a job that doesn't disappear over night or cease to exist - family matters you could say
saul_pako··on What to care about in a job
Love the fact and the way that the topic presented. I find it hard to apply to other lines of work though, especially classic working class jobs and for example healthcare and teaching. How would you guys modify the list? I for one would rate the security much higher even tough I understand that it's not as important for everyone. For physically demanding jobs (practical nurses, nurses, construction workers etc.) I'd also rate long term health very high
saul_pako··on Ancient kids’ toys have been hiding in the archaeological record
For sure there are great difficulties in understanding what has passed when primary sources är long gone and we only have silent artefacts. But don't you think the remains of today, compared to the now considered ancient, due to todays obsession with and more long lasting documentation?
saul_pako··on OpenSeaMap: die freie Seekarte
To this day, how reliable are these kind of maps? I am not to familiar with open water maps and/or navigation but my experience from navigating close to shore tells me that charts not being precise can be quite devastating. Positive to the project as a whole, just curious. And maybe i just missed it on the page, but do they cross reference submissions with for example government funded mappings of the sea?
saul_pako··on Facebook's Desperate Smoke Screen
Interesting article. The whole smoke screen idea is in a way interesting but at the same time; isn't it exactly what is to be expected from commercial providers of social media? I'm not sure if you catch my drift, but since when do we expect for-profit companies to act in societies best interest? To protect your brand does sometimes include admitting wrong doings or sketchy behavior - if we wish to browse through social media without secrets and/or intent to get the user to return as often as possible, shouldn't we accept the state of Facebook and Friends and look in other places?
saul_pako··on Americans are spending less on clothing
As a native of Scandinavia I too have experienced the trend of people claiming their right to be judged on skill rather than background or appearance. Here however, it is often argued that the right to be judged on skill and compatibility, and therefor being able to dress to ones own preferences is earned only when you have proven to be a) greatly over-qualified and b) of a high enough age and/or c) with an ethnicity, gender or other background factors that conform with the existing idea of what a professional in the specific field looks and acts like.
saul_pako··on Anarchist hacker Amir Taaki says Bitcoin’s boom means it’s on verge of collapse
I might be off on this one, so please bear with me if that is the case; as I understand it Taaki says that for a crypto-currency to be functional it has to be anchored in the local language and infrastructure - currencies such as bitcoin are not stable or accessible enough to suffice outside speculative trading and stockmarket-like settings for more than short periods of time. If that's the case, that these currencies are good only for local trading, what good are they and how are we to approach it if we wish to build a stable trading system, that in the end, is truly free from third parties like banks or transaction managers? Or is that even a reasonable or worthwhile goal? Cheers //saul_pako
