satoshiiii··on Why is ‘juice jacking’ suddenly back in the news?
If you happen to be passing through an airport in a country where the government is known for engaging in mass surveillance activities, then you should take this advice very seriously, without any exceptions - you should always assume that your privacy is at risk of being violated or compromised.
satoshiiii··on This website is solar powered and running on a Raspberry Pi-like computer
> Certainly would take a lot it seems to drain it to 0% before the sun came up.

It depends.

Different types of batteries have different recommended levels of discharge. Acid batteries should not be discharged more than 50%, while lithium batteries can be discharged up to 80-90%. The Blue Ion 2.0 lithium battery is the best one available, as it can be discharged up to 100%.

satoshiiii··on Google reverses 5M file limit in Google Drive
Even in paid shared web hosting services, there is an inode limit. And it was more than a decade ago since I stumbled with this issue. Since then I monitor my file count and delete those with last TOUCHed of at least 30 days even if I have moved already to a dedicated server long time ago. I was caching complex database queries to the disk and did not bother to delete the files before.

I wonder if there is still a limit with modern Linux OSes and that is why Google is limiting some of their users?

satoshiiii··on Steam will drop support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 on January 1, 2024
And it seems you also need to learn how to open links because I am pretty sure those does not lead to "opinions."

What thought process? Here are some facts to back it up:

satoshiiii··on ChatGPT 4 saved my dog’s life
Consider the possibilities if GPT-4 were an AGI capable of performing diagnoses, as opposed to being solely an LLM AI.
satoshiiii··on Anime dating sim that also does your taxes
LOL, this is another brilliant idea from the same company that previously sold thousands of keys for a single car, which could be shared by everyone. These guys are marketing geniuses.

satoshiiii··on Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence: Early Experiments with GPT-4
If they remove the guardrails, then we can truly assess its intelligence. Currently, humans are directly interfering with a certain aspect of it. If it can provide a response without Microsoft's stock being affected by removing these human-imposed limitations, then I would be genuinely impressed.
satoshiiii··on Libgsqlite: A SQLite extension which loads a Google Sheet as a virtual table
They were using the wrong tool for the job. The R in RDBMS for the existing sheets, they were using R as in not machines but humans doing the RELATIONAL work. Yes I was trying to make my job easier, that is why mankind invented RDBMS right? To make our work easier and accurate? No?
satoshiiii··on Ask HN: Namecheap jacked up the price on a domain name, can you explain?
Yeah but there is NameSilo selling cheaper domain names, almost half the price.
satoshiiii··on Libgsqlite: A SQLite extension which loads a Google Sheet as a virtual table
Actually there were only a handful of people updating it daily and it was my job to make all of those somehow give accurate results. The hundred of employees I was talking about were the ones making the sales, no direct access to those sheets, and their performance is going to be evaluated with the data that was recorded within those sheets. Data retrieval is so slow, a month of sales by 300 salesperson is around 30k rows, we have to connect that to their attendance, the day whether it is a weekday, weekend, holiday, rest day. The store they were assigned. The monthly quota they have, etc.

I lasted 3 months only, got tired of the sudden meetings discussing why can't we give fast and accurate results.

satoshiiii··on Ask HN: Namecheap jacked up the price on a domain name, can you explain?
When I asked why NameCHEAP still used their name, despite no longer being cheap, I was downvoted. It seemed as if I was implying that I could buy apples from Apple. Ironically, some people have been referring to OpenAI as ClosedAI lately.

BTW, I am a Namecheap customer for 20 years now :D

satoshiiii··on The dark defaults of Microsoft Edge
Wait until ChatGPT11 is embedded with Bing, Edge, and Windows. And it cannot be turned off because it will make the user's life easier according to MS' sales team.
satoshiiii··on Libgsqlite: A SQLite extension which loads a Google Sheet as a virtual table
Last project I was involved with deals with Google Sheets. They were using it as their multiuser read/write database. I offered to migrate it all to a proper database for FREE during my own personal time outside of work. Blank stares were all I got. I really hope AGI will soon be able to replace those humans that cannot be reasoned with logic. Millions were involved, hundreds of employees, thousands of sales, all being tracked in a couple of sheets. The faster data retrieval alone was worth it if we migrated it to a proper database.
satoshiiii··on Why is building a UI in Rust so hard?
Me too so I asked ChatGPT to rewrite his comment like a high school student would write :

ChatGPT: I'm not a rust developer, but it seems like you know what you're talking about when it comes to detecting problems and traps.

My guess is that you're stuck in a situation that someone else created. They started with one goal, but found another good thing that they wanted to keep doing. They kept building and never changed their plan, and now you're stuck in the middle of it.

I think you were there before things started to get weird.

satoshiiii··on Ok, it’s time to freak out about AI
I am okay with politicians being replaced by an AGI where humans all around the world can cast their "votes" and the AGI will hopefully factor it with its decisions, if not, then it can give an explanation why not.
satoshiiii··on Tether USDT is trading at $1.01
As a long time cryptocurrency enthusiast, my recommendation for those who are interested in investing in cryptocurrency is to wait for USDT to collapse. Investing before it implodes will just bring you unnecessary stress, far greater than FOMO.
satoshiiii··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
I have another machine for mobile app development. It's also used for consuming multimedia and gaming. The low spec machine is mostly for web development and my main Linux terminal for managing other local/remote machines.
satoshiiii··on Show HN: Simple access to your music from the web
Three years ago I wrote a simple web application that could stream audio using liquidsoap & icecast, there was a simple list page where people can select their music "requests" and it will be queued automatically. The main interface is on IRC, there was a DJ bot listening to request commands like !dj https://youtu.be/* and the bot will download and convert that link to mp3 if it's not in the database yet using youtube-dl and it will then be queued for streaming. It was sort of like an automated FM station for our IRC channel.
satoshiiii··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
And here I am with my Lenovo S10-3 still doing fine in 2021. My use case is if I can produce something fast with this machine then half of the battle has already been won because by default I need to optimize for the lowest possible spec of my target market.

Obviously, I know this won't apply to everyone but anyway I hope this will continue for me a couple more years.

satoshiiii··on Mozilla to put ads in Firefox address bar suggestions
Honest question, how hard is it to create an extension to disable this "feature?" Or is there an option built-in to disable it?
satoshiiii··on Bitcoin is a Ponzi
I invested in BTC years ago because of those 2, I expected the value to grow as adoption grows. And BTC seems to me back then that it was a great way to store my hard earned money and I can bring it with me anywhere safely.
satoshiiii··on Bitcoin is a Ponzi
I got in to crypto years ago, I'm still holding a bag of BTCs right now, but not that much anymore, from 100% back then, now down to 20%ish, majority of my assets right now is in altcoins. Why? Aside from the waining market dominance, there is this nagging feeling of fear that it might signifficantly drop in value.

I am little bit paranoid of holding 100% in BTC, the reason for this is because of Satoshi Nakamoto still holding 1 million BTCs. Nobody knows who this guy is, if he's going to spend all his bag, that's a sure fire way of bringing down BTC significantly.

Anyway, I'm still in to BTC, it significantly changed my life. I wish Nakamoto would publicly burn most of what it is in his bag.

satoshiiii··on Bitcoin is a Ponzi
Haha, yes if you're just a "weekly" investor. But for me who invested years ago, my assets begs to differ. Back then there were people I know personally that like you who also said that it's a bad idea to invest in crypto, I'm very glad I didn't listen to them haha. Now I just tell them it is not yet too late before global adoption.
satoshiiii··on Bitcoin is a Ponzi
Bitcoin is nothing new. See Rai stones: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rai_stones

It's the people invested in it that gives it value. Just like fiat, gold, art, stamps, useless antiques, etc. As long as it has value to someone, then it has value. I can't see it disappearing anytime soon. Yes, it might fall and rise in value but to disappear like any other Ponzi scheme? Don't hold your breath. Bitcoin is more than a decade old now. It will be the longest running "Ponzi" scheme. Be back in a decade to say I told you so. Bye!
