1) how many people would sign up without a facebook account? 2) how many of them could you "convert" and sign-in again with facebook? (saying something like "ok..now, how about you use your facebook account to [blabla] with your friends on facebook?
I'd say people are more willing to give it a try and see how it looks without passing facebook credentials first... That's just my hint..
If you don't like twitter bootstrap (for your css), you could use this: http://www.getskeleton.com/ It's light enough, and provide a good starting point.
Add colors, borders, and shadows later. Focus first on layout. Come close to screen, and look for details. Go a bit far away from your monitor, and look again the entire design. Sometime it helps to get a better overall view.
Surely what he could learn from a conference will also be very useful to the startup too.
I was looking for some statistics about the ratio of a real (as posted by a company) vs recruiter job post on those job boards, but I couldn't find anything.
I run a similar website to hackerjobs.co.uk (http://roundabout.io/about) and I'm starting to realise that's not the way forward.
* don't leave your CV (especially in word format) in any job board
* send your CV directly to the companies/startups via email
* buy a twilio number, setup call forwarding on that and use it as a disposable phone number in your CV. After you've got a job, you can delete the number.

and I don't see any London startups on the list.
Disclaimer: I'm a developer myself, I made this list out of necessity while looking for a job in London last month.
Last "Who is Hiring June 2012" didn't have any jobs in London!
The list is far from comprehensive, but if you're a developer in London you should definitely have a look at it, there are more than 30 startups listed, and not all of them post in this thread.
