sarah2079··on Robinhood now has a 1-Star rating on the Google Play Store
Agreed. An important thing to remember about the salon story mentioned above is that it is not 45 independent exposure experiments. Some people never shed much virus, or the stylist might not have been shedding very much on that particular day. If you tracked 45 different infected stylists, each working with one client, you might get very different results. This one story definitely does not prove you are safe at a salon as long as you are wearing a mask! (Although please do wear one if you must go).
sarah2079··on Ask HN: Parents, what are you doing for school this fall?
Some schools that are opening for in-person classes this fall don’t anticipate being able to remain open all winter, so they have kept one virtual day to make sure everyone is prepared to switch back to all-virtual when it becomes necessary.
sarah2079··on Americans, it turns out, would rather visit a store than buy food online
I have had the same experience with ordering Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh in the bay area. Everything I order arrives.

I tried using a different grocery delivery and about 30% of what I ordered was out of stock. This was especially frustrating because delivery slots were in short supply here, so I felt rude making another small order immediately to fill in missing items. With WF/AF I at least know what is out of stock when making my order so I can choose my own substitutions or not bother trying to get ingredients for a recipe if something critical is missing.

sarah2079··on Amazon Isn’t the Only Shop Online
I am also in Mountain View and haven’t been in a store since February.

I have been able to place pick up orders with Nob Hill Foods for two weeks out (delivery has not been available lately).

One of my husband’s colleagues has had good luck with Draeger’s via Instacart (he said same day!).

If you make an Amazon Fresh cart and then refresh the page where you select your delivery window a lot between 9 pm and 12 am you can sometimes catch the new batch of delivery windows being released. For most Amazon Fresh warehouses they are released at midnight, but it is controlled by the local warehouse, and ours releases the new slots at random times in the evening. When I can get a slot Amazon fresh is my favorite—good selection and 90% of what I order actually arrives, which is great.

My husband also mentioned a friend successfully having toilet paper delivered from Home Depot.

sarah2079··on Non-Green Plants (2013)
Here's an interesting parasitic plant that you can find in the Bay Area:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuscuta_californica

It's so bright orange that at first I wondered if it was spray paint left behind from construction. There's loads of it around the Bay Trail behind Google.

sarah2079··on Myth of the Brown Recluse
I've seen one at both rancho san antonio & the dish.
sarah2079··on Court OKs child porn prosecution of minors distributing pictures of themselves
Failure rates for contraception are surprisingly high, even if you are using it responsibility. 1% is common, but that's not even over a person's lifetime, that's PER YEAR. That make lifetime failure rate more like 20%.

On top of that some people can't tolerate the most effective hormonal birth control methods methods.

sarah2079··on Amazon's War on Fake Eclipse Glasses Trips Up Newbie Merchant
I have the same question. I ordered some from Amazon for my kids. I hope this article means that they were carefully verified by Amazon, but it has still made me uneasy about using them. Just knowing fakes are common is really concerning.
sarah2079··on Binary Puzzle
Nooooooo! I clicked "The rules in more detail..." and it cleared my half-finished puzzle.
sarah2079··on The Slants Win Supreme Court Battle Over Band's Name
To me it seems like whether it should be possible to trademark that team name and whether it's a name the team should feel proud sticking with in 2017 are two pretty different questions.

I am happy with this legal decision because I don't want the government to be in charge deciding what is offensive and what's not. I also think it's long past time for them to pick a new name. Just because they can legally have that name doesn't mean they should keep it.

sarah2079··on Working from home may hurt your career
It really bugs me how often these work-from-home articles have a photo of the working person trying to work with a young child around, implying that they are also taking care of their kids while working from home.

Obviously doubling up like this does not work, and I don't know anyone who tries to do it. Implying that it's common gives working from home a bad name. At least in this article it is the father home with his child though, usually it's the mother.

sarah2079··on New male contraceptive may be submitted for Indian approval this year
The % efficiency figures for contraceptives are for one year of typical use, not per go.
sarah2079··on San Francisco Asks: Where Have All the Children Gone?
I was about to make the same comment. It's amazing how much the layout affects the usability of the space. I hate, hate, hate those huge master bathrooms and walk in closets because they eat space. Also common where I am: large hallways and entryways that could have been part of a room instead, and an open seating area at the top of the stairs. (What is that even for? Why not just make it an enclosed office. I don't want to hang out on a couch at the top of a stairway). Older 1300 sq ft houses often feel just as spacious as new construction that is 2000 sq ft because they have no wasted space.
sarah2079··on Paper Planes
This appears to be a bug. It was working last night when I tried it, but now I just get the same Mountain View plane over and over again. Also the planes I made have stopped accumulating stamps.

When it was working I was surprised how few of the stamps were from the bay area.

sarah2079··on More Women Than Men Are Obese in America, and Gap Is Widening (2015)
They actually aren't adjusting for sex at all in their definition of obesity, it is just based on height and weight:

"BMI was calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared, rounded to one decimal place. Obesity in adults was defined as a BMI of greater than or equal to 30."

sarah2079··on The Toddler at Y Combinator
In my experience this is not true when the father is also doing a lot of the care, so I am skeptical of the importance of "genetic/chemical/evolutionary forces."

sarah2079··on Four-day work week – Lessons learned
The most important clients for a bank are businesses, not people, and businesses generally want to do their banking from 9-5.
sarah2079··on What Happened with Lego (2013)
Wasn't this covered? He looked at the average price per gram of Lego in addition to price per piece.
sarah2079··on New SAT, New Problems
You are right about being able to predict either, but the specific quantity described in A is the slope, while in B it is the inverse of the slope.
sarah2079··on How My Employer Put the “FML” in FMLA
I am self employed and buy my own insurance in CA and it is about $1000/month for two adults and one child for a silver plan through covered CA. This is for medical only, so not too far off the estimate.
sarah2079··on How My Employer Put the “FML” in FMLA
Another thing that makes it even worse is having health insurance that is tied to your employment. So if you get cancer and can't manage to keep your time off to less than 12 weeks plus your accrued sick days then you can be fired and lose not only your income, but your health insurance as well. It is an unbelievably awful system.
sarah2079··on Mothers’ brains show similar responses to her baby and her dog
When people say their pets are like their children, I don't think they mean "like" as in "exactly identical to." They mean "like" as in their relationship with their pet fills a similar role in their life.

I have had pets and I have a child. If you don't see similarity in these relationships (mainly for the parent-baby relationship, not so much for older children) I think you are taking statements like these MUCH TOO literally. Taking care of a baby was eerily similar to caring for a puppy for me.

It's like someone tells you they are so hungry they could eat a horse, and then you say "Oh really? That would rupture your internal organs causing you a horribly painful death." You are taking something way too literally, and then replying with an unnecessarily morbid answer. The combination of these two is likely to make people wonder what the easiest way is to excuse themselves from the conversation.

sarah2079··on Why I took on building a better way to frame any poster, print or photo
For perspective I had custom framing done recently for something that was about 16"x30" and it was $300. I could have paid less than 50% for a very similar frame using this site.

Even the low-quality frames from craft stores tend to cost significantly more than a cheap poster. A poster is just a big piece of printed paper.

sarah2079··on Delivery Startups Are Back Like It’s 1999
Google shopping express will happily deliver you a $1.67 bottle of coke for free if you are covered by their free trial. This is not their ultimate business plan (outside the trial is $5 per store for 10 items max), but get in on the trial if you can! I have been getting free delivery from them for over a year now.
sarah2079··on The Good, Bad, and Ugly of Adam Carolla’s Settlement with Podcasting Troll
That is insane. $600k in legal fees for a case that didn't even go to trial? Is this normal?
sarah2079··on Alcohol Test: Does Eating Yeast Keep You From Getting Drunk?
If the yogurt + yeast mixture had a noticeable effect then it would have been interesting to tease apart which component was responsible, but since it didn't I think it was fine to leave it out.
sarah2079··on How To Marry The Right Girl: A Mathematical Solution
Isn't this data very skewed by the fact that not believing in cohabitation and not believing in divorce are highly correlated? This group includes lots of marriages that I wouldn't consider good outcomes even though they don't end in divorce.
sarah2079··on Is It Better to Rent or Buy?
I wouldn't say this is a problem with a calculator. These two factors make predicting whether renting or buying will be better really hard in some cases, and the page makes that clear. I see it as an interactive tool that helps you explore all the variables involved rather than a calculator designed spit out a clear yes or no answer in every case.
sarah2079··on Show HN: Fresh-baked rustic sourdough bread, delivered within 20 minutes
I clicked through to read about how they plan on running it long term. They will carry a very limited number of products, and every delivery person has all the products stocked in their van. They then route the nearest delivery person to you when you order, so it's kind of like a mobile coffee shop.

I don't know if it is possible to make it profitable, but it is definitely a service I would use. It is a pain keeping bread on hand because the good stuff only keeps for a day or two.
