lol and the ai told me it was an artistic choice and it can't explain why it's there ..
sans_souse··on America.gov goes crazy on "play Minecraft"
Why is there a photo of a kid laying face down on ice?
sans_souse··on Show HN: Real-time Solar System with 526k asteroids and all tracked satellites
I hate to be the one to come here with a feature request but can you guys hurry up with the Universe already?
sans_souse··on Scientists solve 1840s space weather mystery
It almost seems out of place having that wording of "Scientists solve" as opposed to "AI solves." Breath of fresh air, really.
sans_souse··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
Ever tried joining an IRC channel on any of the many servers with lenient policies on moderation etc, based on the channels name/ description? Sort of a similar experience..

Miller-Dunn has some really crazy concepts here in their index https://www.divescrap.com/DiveScrap_INDEX/Images_Miller_Dunn... Instantly brings to mind my days playing the original Fallout 1 and 2, when you discover the Enclave
sans_souse··on When did Google get so weird?
Exactly. Makes me wonder how much of the compute tax on energy would be saved from simply reverting google search to default (the old way)
sans_souse··on Revealing the details of how OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face
What's most troubling to me isn't what we found, but what haven't found. The fact they attempted to destroy their tracks, and their persistence to accomplishing their goals, makes it entirely possible this is only a sliver of the big picture.
sans_souse··on My weird new hobby: Wandering around Tokyo on Google Maps
My personal vehicle would have appeared to have never moved either. Google tends to stick to daylight hours for street view, so, for those of us working overnight shifts...

I think it's probably a more common thing than you realize, but I get the whole "exploration is interesting" and agree with the jist of the article. There is a lot of cool finds to be found.

sans_souse··on Hackers influence ChatGPT and Gemini to direct users to scam centers
It's almost like we end up needing more humans than we have just to sift thru and filter out the regurgitated slop and the maliciously crafted misinformation. Like, how do you prevent this while keeping the LLM up-to-date and relevant?
sans_souse··on DentaQuest sued for allegedly exposing 15M patients' private information
This is egregiously bad.

> unauthorized third parties were able to access and steal patients’ private information, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health insurance policy numbers, Medicaid/Medicare numbers and dental or vision health information, such as provider names, diagnoses, treatments and billing information.

I'm coming back up for air, these rabbit holes go deep.
sans_souse··on Mayday Mysteries
The term "Diggers" historically refers to "The True Levellers" - 17th-century radical Christian agrarian group that fought against the English establishment and believed the earth was a "common treasury" for all.

See also; edited liquor bottle image referencing the Eagles' "Hotel California" ("We haven't had that spirit here since 1969"). Pop culture reference

sans_souse··on Mayday Mysteries
I just want to be the first to make this connection to "Digger" 2026 starring Tom Cruise and no I'm not joking I'm just really deep in this rabbit hole

sans_souse··on Ask HN: What if we had to come back?
Thank you
sans_souse··on Ask HN: What if we had to come back?
I don't mean to doubt the simulation hypothesis/theories out there grounded in fact. As you point out, it isn't what it sounds like, essentially. But the majority just hears what it sounds like, and form an opinion around it. Ask them to explain, and it's more along the lines of "life's a video game"
sans_souse··on Ask HN: What if we had to come back?
I agree, but you didn't really answer the question.
sans_souse··on Ask HN: What if we had to come back?
I don't understand what you mean. People still have to live in their bodies so it wouldn't change a thing? Can you elaborate how you came to this conclusion?

sans_souse··on The Great Google Scam: The "Delete" Button That Deletes Nothing
I always had the thought in the back of my mind "what better way to flag content as potentially incriminating then to let the user tell you "this conversation is not to be retained."

Especially the way the "advertise" incognito as some sort of untraceable means of searching/chattig etc, we ought to see these sorts of things from a less trusting-by-default perspective.

sans_souse··on Domain-Specific Hallucination Detection in Large Language Models
I skipped to the conclusion to get the overall jist. I think these sorts of studies are important going forward; the prompts efficiency in making for clear, guided instructions the ML can then efficiently handle is exponentially important as context grows. If you are asking the right questions the right way, you can get more back. But if you are causing the LLM to struggle routing its chain of thought it will only get so far along until you can no longer extract anything useful from it (and may well be getting gaslit in the process).

Obvious to some, but it's definitely overlooked by many.
