sandis··on Ask HN: What's your experience with the new macbook?
In 2007? Sure it was.
sandis··on Foursquare's Dennis Crowley can't stop believing
It was silly, sure. But it worked and it encouraged people to check-in AND leave reviews. All of the reviews (or "tips" how they call it) I left were the ones I left after checking-in. Splitting Foursquare into two apps was a mistake. Nearly all of my friends have Swarm installed but most haven't kept the Foursquare app around. The functionality worked great in unison.
sandis··on Amazon Goes After Dropbox, Google, Microsoft with Unlimited Cloud Drive Storage
Could work out fine as an upload-and-forget solution. I have a bunch of stuff I don't need to access often (if ever) and certainly don't want to keep local copies of. Currently using S3 and Glacier for that, but Cloud Drive might just fit the bill.
sandis··on Cool, but obscure unix tools
Misleading title. A good portion of tools listed are extremely popular.
sandis··on Final Root Cause Analysis of Nov 18 Azure Service Interruption
> The engineer fixing the Azure Table storage performance issue believed that because the change had already been flighted on a portion of the production infrastructure for several weeks, enabling this across the infrastructure was low risk.

Ugh, I wouldn't want to be that guy (even if there would be no direct repercussions). That said, and as others have highlighted - kudos on the writeup and openness.

sandis··on Is Apple experiencing a problematic decline in software quality?
I've had way less issues with 10.10 previews than I've had with Mavericks or Mountain Lion ones. Those actually crippled my development environments. I've had zero issues with Yosemite thus far, apart from the new features breaking at some point (iCloud Drive and the like).
sandis··on BashBooster – simple provisioning, bash only, requires nothing
Yet it's a Mercurial repo. Not a big deal and I have nothing against Mercurial, but something that's marketed with "no dependencies" would be better off if it was on Git - way more accessible.
sandis··on Urgent security warning that may affect all internet users
Permalink results in 404, but the post is still viewable on the blog homepage: http://community.namecheap.com/blog/
sandis··on Ask HN: How do you back up your drives?
Amazon Glacier for stuff that can't be redownloaded or reproduced - personal photos and videos, mostly.

Time Machine for documents and projects - those usually live in Dropbox or Github/Bitbucket as well.

I don't bother with backing up OS/configuration, since it takes no more than a day to get a clean OS and applications to a state where I'm feeling at home.

sandis··on Emojli – The emoji-only network
Apparently not yet. Signed up as 🛃 just now (yay..).
sandis··on Him by Hall, helping distributed teams feel less lonely
April's Fools'
sandis··on The Face Behind Bitcoin?
Except then someone who has invested a fortune in Bitcoin might go nuts and take it out on him
sandis··on Ask HN: What are some alternatives to HN?
An invite would be awesome!
sandis··on Thirty Years of Mac [video]
They've done it twice with their "one app at a time" videos:

sandis··on Everpix VC Feedback
I actually agree with you – i'm sure Snapchat, considering their growth and userbase, can turn into goldmine if they play their cards right. It's just weird that a company with an actual revenue is mentioned as an example of us not being in a bubble, while one mobile app without any revenue simply turns down 3+ billion offer - no bubble over there.
sandis··on Everpix VC Feedback
While I'm absolutely certain that Snapchat's marginal costs are much lower than Everpix's, Everpix had real revenue. If we're talking about bubbles, surely that has to count for something - a product people actually are willing to pay for?
sandis··on Google to Acquire Nest
Would it really take $3.2b to engineer a product similar to Nest and market it to an even wider audience? I'm happy for Nest guys, but the number is a bit ridiculous.
sandis··on Everpix VC Feedback
Unlike.. say, Snapchat?
sandis··on OwnCloud 6
While I haven't looked at the source, it is indeed a shame that they're not using a mature, battle-proven framework. With frameworks we have today, why would you roll your own, especially for a project like OwnCloud?
sandis··on OwnCloud 6
XSS has nothing to do with PHP at all.
sandis··on OwnCloud 6
There's nothing inherently wrong with PHP security. You can write crap and insecure applications in any language.
sandis··on We Work Remotely – New Job Board from 37 Signals
Probably to ensure a good overlap, timezone-wise. http://jobmote.com usually tags those with 'US-only' or similar.
sandis··on Samsung unveils Galaxy Gear smartwatch with built-in camera, 70 apps
Can't wait for the 4" model.
sandis··on Latvia blocking extradition of Gozi writer due to disproportionate US sentencing
While this has indeed been the case so far, it's important to point out that the final decision is scheduled to be made by the Cabinet of Ministers tomorrow (Tuesday).
sandis··on GPGMail 2 is finally here
Mavericks is not yet supported it seems - "Incompatible Plug-ins Disabled [..] Contact the makers of these plug-ins for versions that are compatible with Mail 7.0 and Message 7.0."
sandis··on Google And Apple May Bring Us A Console War We Didn't See Coming
How is Apple TV "just an expensive Roku"? $99 certainly is not a high price point. Not to mention that Apple TV actually costs $0.99 less than Roku 3.
sandis··on SendGrid has terminated the employment of Adria Richards?
What's the story here?
sandis··on Show HN: My weekend project, Remojōbo: a remote job board for web nerds
That's what http://jobmote.com/ does currently.
sandis··on Ask HN: What is the coolest JS library out there?
I'd say jQuery is pretty sexy for what it does. That's one of the main (if not the main) reasons it took off.
sandis··on BlackBerry 10 Live Webcast
Presentation wise, I found the Alicia Keys gym analogy and some other things to be cringe-worthy as well.
