samweinberg··on Medium and Hacker News, what’s the difference?
This is an odd comparison. There are a lot of differences, I guess.
samweinberg··on Shortcat - Keyboard productivity app for Mac OS X
It's like Ctrl + F meets Vimium.
samweinberg··on Ask HN: vpn or other encrypted proxies?
Stay away from free VPNs.

Nearly every VPN service in this article is a good choice - http://torrentfreak.com/vpn-services-that-take-your-anonymit....

I've personally used Mullvad and PrivateInternetAccess, both of which are on the list and provide good service.

samweinberg··on Ask HN: Alternatives to HN
I would like an invite as well. Thanks.

samweinberg··on Ask HN: Alternatives to HN
/r/webdev just rehashes the stuff posted on HN.
samweinberg··on QR Code in shopping cart handle
Not as fun!
samweinberg··on IMessages for OS X sucks
I used iChat all the time until it was replaced by Messages. I've since been using Adium and haven't looked back.

Every single time I receive a text though, Messages opens on my Mac without my permission, often getting in the way of what I'm trying to work on. The rare times when I actually use it, the conversations are reordered and many are just missing.

"Free as in beer, not free as in speech."

samweinberg··on Github major service outage
Or for the HN friends without Javascript, http://isup.me/github.com.
samweinberg··on Mistakes Web Designers Make
Form follows function. Basecamp may not have the prettiest looking homepage, but at least it works. The copy effectively communicates what Basecamp is, and the website is laid out fairly well.

Was there something specific about the page that you had a critique on?

samweinberg··on Build it with me: Bitcoin wallet for Mac
I wouldn't say Armory works fine on OS X. In fact, it's a bit of a hassle to set up. From their website:

>WARNING: This does not work on all OSX systems. We are working hard to expand the compatibility set. If it does not work for you, most users have success from the directions on the Building Armory from Source page. It takes a little bit of effort, but it works!

samweinberg··on Show HN: My first iOS app - Soundtribe - 45 second sound clips with filters
After PhoneGap, which approach did you end up taking?

Congrats on the app, by the way!

samweinberg··on Why doesn't HN get the hackernews.com domain?
Because it's taken.
samweinberg··on Ask HN: What's the most creative use of IFTTT you've seen?
I created a Twitter bot for reddit's Bitcoin community with IFTTT: https://twitter.com/redditbtc.

I also have the weather for my area texted to me every morning, which is pretty handy. Another recipe of mine is to automatically forward my App.net posts to Twitter.

samweinberg··on Why Anti-Authoritarians are Diagnosed as Mentally Ill (2012)
But a Nobel is granted to a genius already made.
samweinberg··on Poll: Do you have a 3d printer?
I definitely see the potential in 3D printers, but I just don't have enough of a need for such a machine at the time being. Well, at least not a need not big enough to justify the price.

I have no experience with 3D modeling or home manufacturing, so the learning curve is another reason I'm holding off for now.

samweinberg··on This page is anonymous
If the laundering method is illegal, then yes.
samweinberg··on Path texts my entire phonebook at 6 AM
Getting everyone to stop using Path is pretty over-complicated.

We need them to change their ways, not disappear.

samweinberg··on LivingSocial Hacked – 50 Million Customers Affected
You reuse your passwords? Tsk tsk tsk...
samweinberg··on DDoS attacks on Mt. Gox delay rollout of new virtual currency
I should have worded that a bit better.

The majority of Bitcoin trade occurs at Mt.Gox, so you could say the market is pretty centralized.

Actually, Bitfloor had to cease all trading operations indefinitely. That aside, there are plenty of other reputable exchanges that need to gain more market share. It's ridiculous that a DDoS attack could be used for price manipulation purposes. That shouldn't be too much of a problem in a diversified market.

samweinberg··on DDoS attacks on Mt. Gox delay rollout of new virtual currency
>Mt.Gox is the world's largest bitcoin exchange, handling about 63% of all bitcoin transactions as of April 2013.

A decentralized currency should not rely so heavily on a central exchange.

samweinberg··on Show HN: Finding the colours of the web
This is like an interactive version of www.brandcolors.net. Very nice!
samweinberg··on Twitter Should Shut Me Down
I wouldn't say it's a slight distinction. Humans may be able to behave like bots by mass-favoriting tweets, but they will never be able to achieve the volume that bots do.
samweinberg··on Jack Dorsey on 60 Minutes
Interesting how the interviewer's immediate response to Dorsey was "hacking is a crime".
