samplatt··on Extreme supersonic winds measured on a planet outside our solar system
Some more context:

Sun -> Pluto distance is average of 40a.u.

500a.u. is 0.0079 lightyears.

Nearest star to us is ~4.5 Lightyears.

This exoplanet is ~520 lightyears away.

samplatt··on Homemade polarimetric synthetic aperture radar drone
A lot of anti-drone jamming is severing the wireless communication between a drone and its operator.

In most of the write-up, these drones were on pre-planned autonomous routes, and would thus not be affected. Unless you also had anti-radar installations :-)

Or hell, some kinda highly-illegal and mostly-unfeasible microwave gun or multi-watt CO2 laser that you could point at a drone and bring it down.

samplatt··on DeaDBeeF: The Ultimate Music Player
>music player with the extremely specific feature I used in winamp

If you have any windows boxes around, WACUP (WinAmp Community Update Project) is a recent-build of winamp without the bullshit. And includes the Enqueue feature.

samplatt··on We need network societies, not network states (2024)
That video crossed my path 2 days ago. As much as it';s terrifying, I can't help but be impressed by how fucking close William Gibson and Mike Pondsmith came in writing their background-lore for their respective cyberpunk universes.

The Corpos seizing power from a failing democracy, instigating war, and then declaring their own territories and power structures. From which the country, the world, never recovers.

samplatt··on Introducing deep research
That's the third time in this thread you've stated "OpenAI is in an existential crisis". It looks very suspicious.
samplatt··on Introducing deep research
>Meta question

I think you have to prefix the query with "@Meta AI", hope this helps

samplatt··on Making the video that made Gorillaz
Absolutely fantastic answer, thanks very much. Appreciated because I'm at a pretty good point in my life to minimise (or at least accept) preconceptions, and go and freely (re)interpret songs with a half-lifetime of experience behind me. Looking forward to it.
samplatt··on Soviet Shoe Factory Principle
Fellow P 7 Pro owner here: yeah the 8 Pro is better. Still wish I'd got something else, but at least audio through the USB-C port doesn't have a buzzing caused by the clock on the chip.
samplatt··on Making the video that made Gorillaz
>Deltron 3030 (an album I liked a lot more when it was new than I do now)

I only discovered Deltron 3030 a couple of years ago, fucking love it. Why do you like it less now? Is there a controversy around it or him?

samplatt··on Goodbye, Slopify
Happy to find Ben Jordan's video here. He's done a few videos about just how bad Spotify (and others) are, and they're all very refreshing data-driven reviews of the industry, free from as much bullshit and bias as is possible.
samplatt··on Is Social Media More Like Cigarettes or Junk Food?
Pretending a problem doesn't exist just because it has indirect chemical reactions instead of direct chemical reactions is dangerously stupid.
samplatt··on Life in Another Light, 2024 Infrared-Photography-Contest Winners
These are gorgeous. Can't go past this without a heads-up for Greg Egan's 2014 short story Seventh Sight, where the protagonists hack their (at the time bleeding-edge tech) eye implants, allowing them to be part of a vanishingly-small group of people that can see into the infrared and ultraviolet.
samplatt··on Nvidia announces next-gen RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs
>If an average csgo or valorant player were to play with framegen while the real fps was about 60

That's just it isn't. This stuff isn't "only detectable by profession competitive gamers" like many are proposing. It's instantly noticeable to the average gamer.

samplatt··on Images of gamma-ray flare from supermassive black hole M87
Damn, AUD$6.5k, that's WELL outside my range. I'm lucky here in Western Australia; it's relatively easy to get comparatively dark skies - I've not met any amateurs that have a cooled CCD.
samplatt··on Images of gamma-ray flare from supermassive black hole M87
Fantastic shot! What's your mount/tracker?
samplatt··on Small Businesses vs. Corporations: What Tech Tools Are We Missing?
Well... WE will learn their error the hard way. They're well set up to already fill those other positions that were mentioned.
samplatt··on The Myth of Bananaland
I'm a little surprised no one's mentioned the root source of banana-peel-slipping: fraud.

TL;DR - At the turn of last century, suing for personal damages experienced a peak where people would fake an injury. It's literally where the trope in the old moves came from.

samplatt··on The Google Willow Thing
Read a lot of popular books for conversational ideas, follow the news for topical application of them, and attempt cognitive & emotional empathy for per-person personalization of the application.

Simple in theory, juggling plates and knives in practice...

samplatt··on The Google Willow Thing
Technically yes, but I've been here for a few years. Why?
samplatt··on The Google Willow Thing
As an autistic that brute-forced the "witty social banter" skill early on and has recently turned 40... I kinda wish I'd learned quantum computing instead tbh.
samplatt··on "This is not a joke, Funko just called my mom"
Similar to Stross' Accelerando (a book released just after the Napster era), where russian mafia legal bots went around suing everyone for whatever reason they could get their hands on.
samplatt··on Caving scientists exploring the darkest places on Earth
There's not much to find for 99.99% of both of those. Like, exploring a distant planet versus exploring actual vacuum "space", is similar to exploring an undersea thermal vent versus exploring millions of square miles of featureless silt around it.
samplatt··on Exploring the Cost and Feasibility of Battery-Electric Ships
There's hope that sodium-ion tech will come to the rescue, here. The energy-density is bordering on 'good enough' but it's not quite there, yet.

There's other technologies that they're trialing for boats that seem silly but works on paper at least. We're currently building a ferry with a massive flywheel to store lots of rotational inertia to convert to electricity, which on the face of it is bonkers but again, the maths says it's good.

samplatt··on Watermark Anything
To a more and lesser degree depending on the action, I try to apply "that rigor" to myself, at least?

And yes, I think the world would be better off if more people considered how their decisions impact others, if that's what you're getting at, but it's unrealistic to expect everyone to care about other people - and of course entirely impossible to account for ALL variables.

samplatt··on Watermark Anything
Assuming you're purchasing from someone with infinite carbon credits and you're spending it in an environment with infinite ability to re-sink the carbon. Sure.
samplatt··on An unusual Google Keyboard bug
I'm guessing parent was requesting an alternative that was demonstrably better rather than examples of how it's bad - and thus saying that GBoard is actually okay on this front, regardless of how actually usable it is.

For the record I'm with you, I WISH swiping was reliable but it's just so often so far off the mark. I remember it being better as well, but that was probably very early on in its use, when I was paying more attention to how I was swiping and going slower, as well.

samplatt··on Digging into PlantStudio, a bit late
If you can point me at a database that I can dynamically redimension at the drop of a hat for whatever different flavour of bullshit gets thrown at me this week, including the ability to easily identify content issues by sight, I'm all ears.
samplatt··on Digging into PlantStudio, a bit late
If it (Excel) could only work with >64k rows, I'd never need to upgrade.
samplatt··on Amazon reveals first color Kindle, new Kindle Scribe, and more
In this case there's the extra meta joke with Monopoly originally being created to show how capitalism is bad.
samplatt··on Dookie Demastered
