second point; you and i may not be using android and google backup, a vast majority does.
also the issue of device-backups containing the unecrypted message history which is beeing shared from google to facebook.
additional reminder that fb-messenger, whatsapp, imessage and probably a lot others started out as xmpp forks/dialects and even this was not enough to save us from the corporates.
the average car in germany is 12 years old. from this perspective new-ish cars are a minority .

i'd second this guess because its a common setup. OP could check the external ip before/after the reconnection and verify this way if it changed.

aiming for robustness is key if you want to enable a diverse ecosystem.
not just android, they work with every mobile handset even with the poorest reception or (even lack of) data-plan.
i use ~200 sms per year, pretty constant since i got my first mobilephone.
kinda sad we didnt come up with something better thou.
tg is light on resources like phone storage and bandwidth (and hence money) and has excellent multidevice support.
apart from that i don't belive one can have a seriously private conversation involving a device running popular versions of android/ios.
