samirm··on Show HN: Outlier, a new daily word game
summed it up perfectly. western trivia is boring and not for me
samirm··on Tesla teardown finds electronics 6 years ahead of Toyota and VW
Both problems could be solved with money, but according to the article it seems the giants are refusing to move due to historical relationships (which tesla does not have).
samirm··on Ask HN: How Can I Learn Music Theory?
To someone with 0 knowledge of music theory and the desire to learn it, this is kind of useless tbh. You're making a lot of assumptions in this post that aren't very helpful :/
samirm··on Hard comp-fi reading list
Croshaw's Mogworld isn't hard, but relevant.
samirm··on Ask HN: Are you ok?
I disagree that mental health is anymore stigmatized than it is in other industries. Source?

samirm··on Show HN: Duple – Private cloud at home
Terrible website design. Absolutely no reason to block all content just because I have js turned off.
samirm··on Ask HN: What problems do you see worth solving in 2019-2020?
> you don't have to fly out of country

is not an answer to "I want to travel" or "I happen to be born in the 'wrong' country and now I'm not allowed to travel"

samirm··on Ask HN: What problems do you see worth solving in 2019-2020?
For most IoT applications an increase in bandwidth wouldn't be as beneficial as, for example, a decrease in power usage or an increase in range (without also increasing power usage/complexity/etc).
samirm··on No More Cheap Shipping for Chinese Sellers
>but it is now in the conquering superpower category, it's time it loses this advantage

samirm··on What happens when you launch Google Chrome for the first time?
Didn't MSFT just announce they're moving away from UWP in favour of Win32?
samirm··on Mercedes-Benz pre-safe sound
I'd say a comparison to Tesla would be way more apt than to Honda.
samirm··on Planet: Imaging the entire Earth every day
I hope they start imaging at least parts of the ocean, like the great pacific garbage patch and other areas of particular interest for meteorologists and environmentalists.
samirm··on Planet: Imaging the entire Earth every day
Doesn't really matter if you're across the globe...

samirm··on Knuth on Huang's Sensitivity Proof: “I've got the proof down to one page” [pdf]
Thanks for the trivia, although your comment on displays is a bit misleading: >I first viewed it on a Linux desktop; on a Mac laptop with Retina display it looks much better though somewhat “light”

There's nothing special about Apple displays that makes them "retina", it's just a (marketing) term they use that denotes a standard for pixel density at a specific distance away from the screen. The point I'm trying to make here is you could have just as easily had a "retina" display on your linux machine, if not better.

samirm··on Google unlocks 33% of publisher paywalls on July 30
Why does news have to be scalable? I don't understand your comparison to medical bills or gofundme either.

>Some people can support themselves with patreon but the number is limited

isn't that true for all industries?

>Crowdfunding also encourages extreme opinions and bubbles over neutral reporting.

lol wat. you got a source for that?

samirm··on Americans' plastic recycling is dumped in landfills
Not sure what the point of this comment is. It's not as though this article said this issue only affects the US...
samirm··on Malicious code in the purescript NPM installer
Agreed about this not being an exploit, but this is definitely malicious code.
samirm··on Brain stimulation increases monkeys’ ability to quickly perform tasks (2017)
Yeah, there's been a bunch of studies published on how this works for humans too. Just a matter of moderation. Only thing is, we don't know about long term effects (if any) yet.

samirm··on Saving Lydia
Happiness is only understood in contrast. On the one hand you obviously want to protect your child and ensure their happiness, but on the other, by doing so, you might be robbing them of the essential human experience. Happiness shouldn't be an end goal to a life, but a byproduct of one. Negative experiences shouldn't be looked down upon and avoided, after all that is how we learn and improve ourselves - by overcoming adversity.

Having said all that, this is an incredibly tough decision to make and is solely up to your family.

samirm··on At what time of day do famous programmers work?
I don't get why so many people here are up in arms about commits not actually representing real work or when it was done. The author never stated what he thinks a commit represents and yet so many of you try to find some kind of flaw with his method and ascribe your own meaning to words he never said. Just enjoy this for what it is - a simple histogram for commits in a project.
