samemail88··on Why does Apple hate the scrollbar?
I think Apple was the first to jump on this bandwagon. The others are following along.
samemail88··on Why does Apple hate the scrollbar?
What if Apple took your argument to the extreme and remove the URL bar, back button and the tabs bar so you can focus on the website? Would you be OK with that?
samemail88··on Why does Apple hate the scrollbar?
I agree, at least with the phone, there's limited screen. There's NO reason why the scrollbar should be invisible for the desktop though.
samemail88··on Why does Apple hate the scrollbar?
Most non tech users never change the defaults on their phones/laptops. This means for those users, the scrollbar is effectively removed (other than scrolling).
samemail88··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
But are the people who are buying the big SUVs in an arms race against Semis/Big Pick ups? Everybody knows their cars can't compete in size compared to Semis/Big pick ups. I believe their arm races are against other consumers who are driving big SUVs. They're looking to have the biggest SUVs on regular roads (outside the highway).
samemail88··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
I agree but I think consumers will jump to electric cars instead now that they're an option.
samemail88··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
But does this include pedestrians and bikers who are killed by vehicles?
samemail88··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
What happens when people see the high cost of gas and switch to big electric cars instead?
samemail88··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
You break the arms race by limiting the size.
samemail88··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
Exactly, if I can afford it, can I drive a tank around that hogs two lanes? Why is that illegal? Why is nobody protesting the government banning Juul?
samemail88··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
Kei cars are awesome but sadly they will never be safe on American roads even if they're street legal. The speed of our roads and the sizes of our cars will basically kill you if you get into an accident in a Kei car. If our speed limits were lowered and our cars were smaller, I would love to own one of those.
samemail88··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
The government can levy large taxes on new big vehicles just like they did with cigarettes. If the largest SUVs had a 25% tax on it, I think most people will not buy it (basically limiting it). Or if the gas prices went to $10 a gallon, people will ditch their big vehicles.
samemail88··on [dead]
Maybe the government needs to limit the amount of money going i to ads/tracking by enforcing data privacy and banning certain practices like fingerprinting users and stalking them around the web.
samemail88··on Reddit moderators need to be stopped
I didn't know that! Maybe they should put that in guidelines or not permaban people?
samemail88··on Reddit moderators need to be stopped
I agree spam is a problem if it's actually spam. I would think the Reddit hivemind would push back articles down and good articles up. Articles like this is kinda broad; there's really no particular sub I can think of that would fit into.
samemail88··on Reddit moderators need to be stopped
what's a good niche sub about technology?
samemail88··on Readable code is better than efficient code
Unreadable inefficient code should be caught in pull requests. If its already in the code base, it should be refactored as the code gets touched.
samemail88··on Simple Resume Hosting
If you're tired of LinkedIn and am looking for an alternative place to host your resume, check out this site. Basic, simple resume hosting and free. You can host multiple versions of your resume and even password protect it if you like.
samemail88··on Bad UI is causing people to get scammed
Some non techie users might not think to do that since they received what appears a legitimate email from Venmo.
samemail88··on My return to desktop applications
Why use Office 365 when you can use Office locally (assuming you need/want to use Office)?
samemail88··on My return to desktop applications
I understand not everybody likes PHP, some prefer python, java, go. PHP is my go to language for tinkering on my personal projects. Also, I don't need to run an instance per each little desktop application. I can run one instance and "host" all them on the same instance.
samemail88··on My return to desktop applications
Exactly. It's like KeePassXC. It's a local app but the syncing of your password file is on you. You can choose to sync it however you want. You can choose to use Dropbox/Google Drive/etc or choose not to sync at all. The benefit you have a choice and you have complete control of the data/file. Nobody can take that away from you.
samemail88··on My return to desktop applications
Different use cases for different people. When I do real web surfing, its usually on the computer. When I'm on my phone, its light surfing (finding a restaurant address, etc). Also, if you really want it sync between two computers, you can use Syncthing or Dropbox.
samemail88··on My return to desktop applications
I only mentioned dropbox if I wanted to sync my database on multiple computers. I don't need to, so I don't need dropbox.
samemail88··on My return to desktop applications
This is on the assumption I want to host it online. I don't want the task to maintain a web server and pay for its cost. I just want to be able to it use it locally. I want to be able to send it to a family/friend and they can run it themselves.
samemail88··on My return to desktop applications
Thats why I decided to build my own. My bookmark manager is 100% local. It even caches pages I bookmark using chrome headless. The data is stored in a sqlite file which I can sync using Dropbox, Syncthing, etc if I use multiple computers.
samemail88··on Ask HN: Anybody Using PHPDesktop?
I don’t use it for professional development but I do use it for my own productivity applications I run locally.
samemail88··on Case for self-hosted Google search
If you're like me and you're tired of the noise in google search, host it yourself. This way you can decide the layout, remove the ads, cluster and see the organic results.
samemail88··on Ask HN: Is a non-profit selling at cost drugs using True Pill possible?
Has anybody able to get access to the True Pill API?
samemail88··on Ask HN: What's an app or business you wish somebody else would build?
Close, but without centralization, I can't imagine non-techies would use this.
