samdoidge··on Tech Giants Take Their Talent Hunt to Cambridge, UK
> If you want to sell into Europe then Britain made sense...until the fuckwits voted for leave (yeah I'm bitter, they fucked over everyone my age and under).

I think this is where the 'Remoaner' labels come from.

samdoidge··on Italy Wikipedia shuts down in protest at proposed EU copyright law
>The law clearly states that the size of the company and the costs of the "measures" should be taken into account, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Umm, no. It doesn't stop it being an issue. The wording is ambiguous and this is risk that needs consideration when embarking on a venture. This law has definitely added at least friction to competing startups, and a barrier to entry at worst.

samdoidge··on Apple Engineers Its Own Downfall with the Macbook Pro Keyboard
This is not just aesthetics, this is design, which Apple is built on
samdoidge··on Linux is Obsolete (1992)
> Apologies to ast, and thanks to John Nall for a friendy "that's not how it's done"-letter. I over-reacted, and am now composing a (much less acerbic) personal letter to ast. Hope nobody was turned away from linux due to it being (a) possibly obsolete (I still think that's not the case, although some of the criticisms are valid) and (b) written by a hothead :-)

> Linus "my first, and hopefully last flamefest" Torvalds

Comparing this to his more recent emails, it doesn't seem him he has mellowed with age!

samdoidge··on State of Washington sues Facebook and Google over failure to disclose spending
There does seem to be an issue around campaign finance. The official Remain campaign, the Lib dems, and European Movement UK were also fined over their referendum spending.

samdoidge··on State of Washington sues Facebook and Google over failure to disclose spending
The title should be updated to include 'political' before 'spending'.
samdoidge··on Do We Need Central Banks? (2017)
That depends if the Bitcoin blockchain size is growing at a faster rate than the storage available on a median hard drive.

The blockchain is currently at 160~GB, and I believe it will grow around <60GB a year. [1] In 10 years it may be ~760GB, but the median hard drive shouldn't be too far from this.

samdoidge··on So Your Startup Received the Nightmare GDPR Letter
Why are we down-voting this post? The argument seems logical. Respond with counter-points instead, please..
samdoidge··on Apple Signs Deal with Volkswagen for Driverless Car
> DHL has famously chosen StreetScooter instead of VW to built their last-mile fleet and the top brass in VW were also famously upset about this.

Any reason this is substantial news? People choose other vehicles over VW all the time, it's normally down to price.

> perhaps because VW insisted on keeping diesels alive longer than it made any sense.

Anything to back up this statement? They seem to have been doing well lately [1](https://www.ft.com/content/6e31d4e2-fb5f-11e7-9b32-d7d59aace...)

samdoidge··on Glassdoor has been acquired by Recruit Holdings for $1.2B
Shock because the price seemed to high, or too low? This seems reasonable / a good deal to me. I recently found the website useful- they have a lot of data, and offer a good incentive to acquire more data (Add a salary / review to see more).
samdoidge··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
The pedestrian is a lot more obvious to the eye than I suspected, and it's actually quite shocking. They are correct to stop all road tests until they have investigated why they are missing this.
samdoidge··on A plane flying over Germany drawing a Christmas tree
I hadn't known a couple to mean more than 2, but the Cambridge dictionary does seem to agree[1].. however the Oxford Dictionaries site only seems to indicate only 2[2]. In this case, I'll update my correction ;)

samdoidge··on A plane flying over Germany drawing a Christmas tree
*It looks like 'a couple' was correct usage - apologies!

'a couple' = 2, 'a few' would be more accurate :)

samdoidge··on Apple at Its Best
> Isn't this more to do with demographics of an average iPhone user rather than iPhone as a platform? One might argue that both are related but using this as a reason seems kind of superfluous.

Of course they are related. Why does the iPhone have this specific demographic, if not for the platform?

samdoidge··on Why I Still Use Vim
I've tried Atom - quickly went back to Sublime from my speed tests. I had a similar speed issues with https://hyper.is vs iTerm. These new tools look pretty but performance matters, especially for your most-used tools.
samdoidge··on What Is Trump Worth to Twitter? One Analyst Estimates $2B
He brings a lot of attention, Trump switching to another platform would be a real blow for Twitter. If it is to a platform more friendly to free speech, it could be real competition for Twitter.
samdoidge··on Why We Terminated Daily Stormer
> So yes, everybody is afforded equal protection under the law

This is contradicted by 'protected classes'.

samdoidge··on My grandfather at Dunkirk
Most of these are of little importance. The German army had swept through France with ease. They could have finished off the British forces, as the generals wanted to - Hitler's intervention is the key reason in my view.
samdoidge··on My grandfather at Dunkirk
They were saved from Dunkirk as the German army was ordered not to pursue.

Aristotle realised the rational argument does not always win a long time, and then wrote Poetics.
samdoidge··on Sperm Count Dropping in Western World
Why would you not assume this is a bad thing? Sperm are needed for the survival of our species; a significant drop will cause problems to that survival, a drop to zero will cause extinction.
