sambf··on ‘Energy independence feels practical’: Europeans building mini solar farms
It's been the case for several years in Lidl Germany and about a year in France
sambf··on My Homelab Setup
M.2 SATA cards are also a thing, I repurposed a NUC in a SuperMicro (SYS-521R-T) mini tower server with 4 drives and it works great.
sambf··on /e/OS is a complete, fully “deGoogled” mobile ecosystem
Yeah I don't understand it either. Why can't you just use a card? Also, are cashless stores a real, developed thing? I've never encountered one in Europe.
sambf··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
I'd add that KDE Connect works great with Gnome too
sambf··on Making niche solutions is the point
What is the difference between your project and regular (european) plinths, which already have a built-in channel for passing cables?
sambf··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
I agree, at this point it seems clear that Windows is not their priority anymore and they're trying to scare its users away. But Windows is so penetrated into everyone's office, industry and home that they shouldn't be allowed by law to just leave it like this.
sambf··on Adafruit: Arduino’s Rules Are ‘Incompatible With Open Source’
You can definitely override existing and create custom C++ components in ESPHome without too much hassle. It allows lambdas in the YAML itself.

In France (and maybe other countries) this is kind of what Courrier International [0] does but with humans curating and translating articles from around the world, and human-written summaries articles from multiple sources. It's in the same holding as Le Monde.

sambf··on ESP32-Faikin: ESP32 based module to control Daikin aircon units
If it is like ESPHome, the IR sequences are included. Mostly from databases like IRDB [0]

sambf··on The $25k car is going extinct?
A used Renault Twingo II with AC cost around 5k€ if you want "just a car"
sambf··on Android 16 is here
Is the 4a still supported with security updates? What OS are you running? GrapheneOS stopped support so I scored a cheap 8a but I really dislike it. Had to boot my 4a again for some reason the other day and I realized I really missed it, it's so small and lightweight compared to the 8a.

sambf··on Mixxx: GPL DJ Software
I do have a similar story with the 2.4.1 or 2.4.2 version unfortunately. Didn't take the time to debug it or fill an issue yet but when the library (between 100 and 200G) is on a USB stick it regularly hangs for 10-15s when browsing. It always came back to normal but made me sweat every time.
sambf··on Ask HN: Should you reply STOP to unwanted texts?
Worked for a company that offers marketing & transactional SMSes: our SMS provider relayed the STOPs and we were obligated to honor it, but the provider couldn't check it.

Also, the provider relayed the STOP to the last of their client that reached the number, they had no way to trace it back with 100% confidence.

sambf··on Reverse engineering Ticketmaster's rotating barcodes
You should consider thermal printers like the Brother PJ line. A bit expensive but so small you can put it in a drawer, and no cartridge or toner at all. Just thermal paper, which I run off the same pack since I bought the printer 3 years ago.
sambf··on Two scammers, a web of betrayal, and Europe's fraud of the century
Based on Fabrice Arfi's book of the same name. He works at Mediapart, a french journal that outed many state scandals. He's also one of the four french members of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
sambf··on Show HN: 3D map of shade around the world
That's very useful, thanks.
sambf··on Show HN: I'm working on a open-source, self-hosted alternative to Disqus
Isso works great. Install and forget!
sambf··on Disqus, a dark commenting system
I'm using Isso [0], it's simple, lightweight, and does the job. A demo is on their page.

sambf··on Show HN: Devbook – Search Engine for Developers
I'm already using https://devdocs.io that aggregates a lot of docs pretty neatly, but would love to try your project when it arrives on Linux.
sambf··on Building a Homelab VM Server
> will cause a lot of trouble with every female living in the same household

You meant "with every people not having this hobby". You know there are females with this very hobby, don't you? Even r/homelab and r/datahoarder mods are sick of it.

sambf··on Raspberry Pi 4 can finally boot directly from USB
Emby also offers the ability to control and play stuff on other Emby devices on the same network. LibreELEC/Kodi + the Emby plugin [0] on a Pi makes it appear as an Emby device on other devices. Been using that for more than a year an it works like a charm. Plus the data is fetched from the Emby server and not device to device, so you can play something from your phone to your TV, then continue to control from your tablet while your phone is off.

sambf··on 2M chickens to be killed in US processing plants due to lack of employees
Yep. Although I'm now used to have location-restricted media content, I think that's the first time I can't read an article because of my location.
sambf··on Placer.ai: Visibility into consumer foot-traffic
It seems to be embedded into a mobile app SDK, deployed on 20M+ devices [0].

sambf··on Show HN: Visual travel destination discovery tool, currently by matching weather
Very useful, thanks. I'm planning to move and my main criteria is the weather.
sambf··on Show HN: Base – API for authentication, email sending, images and more
The sign-up button for the developer plan doesn't work (Firefox 68.0.1). Nice idea though. It'd be neat to be able to host it ourselves, if you ever plan to release it as OSS.
sambf··on America’s Cities Are Running on Software from the ’80s
The vast majority of Paris buildings were build between 1851 and 1914 [1]. I myself live in a 1903 building.

sambf··on Why isn't the internet more fun and weird?
Actually, some subreddits are deeply customized and bring back that web 1.0 feeling. Two of them on my mind: https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating, https://www.reddit.com/r/jungle
sambf··on Show HN: Vinyl record and sleeve grading tool
