I did not know I had such a strong reaction to seeing curly braces in python. brr not my cup of tea. but all the power to you
sambalbadjak··on Edsger Dijkstra carried computer science on his shoulders (2020)
I like Dijkstra's quote: "The question of whether machines can think is about as relevant as the question of whether submarines can swim."
sambalbadjak··on IAC sold 17 apps to Bending Spoons. $100M deal, all 330 employees fired
I guess you'll never know :)

In the Netherlands we use Erbij, (https://erbij.app), which is now going international. full disclosure, I'm one of the founders
sambalbadjak··on Fairphone 5: Keeping it 10/10?
I thought that fairphone was: you buy once, and you can upgrade modules over time. But it seems that modules of newer fairphones don't necessarily fit an older fairphone. So it's more about repairable for that specific version. Which is still better than no repairability.. but I imagine you can feel quite duped still having to buy a new phone every 3 years and throwing the old one out.

Anyone with experience of having a fairphone for multiple years?

sambalbadjak··on Diamonds Suck
lol, I forwarded this article to my girlfriend, and she immediately responded: absolutely not!

I guess some things are not meant to be optimised. She mentioned that you can buy a lab-grown diamond for much cheaper, and keep the same shine as a "real" diamond.

sambalbadjak··on I wired up my bike's GPS to order me pizza during a gravel race

sambalbadjak··on Squeezing a Sokoban game into 10 lines of Haskell
this post put a smile upon my face. a good example how someone becomes creative when limited
sambalbadjak··on Recursive Game of Life
This should be an option for a screensaver. Well made!
sambalbadjak··on Ask HN: Do you look angry while you work?
I don't know if I look angry, but I can make a lot of strange noises while programming.
sambalbadjak··on Ask HN: What is something you built but never marketed?
https://www.erbij.app it's actually used by 30k users. But never marketed it.
sambalbadjak··on Ask HN: What are the best programming tricks you know?
if you use Jira/bitbucket, you can prefix the branche names and git commit messages with the Jira ticket number. This way git blame can quickly give you the the context of the ticket.
sambalbadjak··on Installing a payphone in my house
I enjoyed reading that!
sambalbadjak··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
I still recall the tune of the menu.. that game is so good.

I thought Deus Ex Human Revolution got some parts right though.

sambalbadjak··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
You might enjoy Valheim, it's a survival game which you can casually enter in and out.
sambalbadjak··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Yeah indeed, I'm just playing that now with my girlfriend. She normally doesn't play games, but she even enjoys it. I like how creative the developers are with everyday objects.
sambalbadjak··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
I was just about to mention that, loved that map. And yes, 5/5 would play this game
sambalbadjak··on Feather Wiki: app for creating personal non-linear notebooks, databases, wikis
I'm impressed. A serverless/internetless wiki. How would upgrading the "engine" work though? e.g implementing a search or adding code highlighting in the the wiki.
sambalbadjak··on Ask HN: Have you created programs for only your personal use?
I created a cronjon that automatically signs me up for gym classes.

sambalbadjak··on My Python testing style guide (2017)
I'd add to that, that test should be readable. personally I prefer to use: GIVEN, WHEN, THEN as comments in the tests. Also; it's ok not to be DRY while writing tests.
sambalbadjak··on Meetup.com alternatives
I use the Dutch Erbij app to organize meetups myself - https://erbij.app

However, for browsing I still use meetup.com

sambalbadjak··on Russia’s new FindFace app identifies strangers in a crowd with 70% accuracy
Did you read any philosophical paper on this issue? I'm interested in reading more about your view.
sambalbadjak··on Ask HN: How happy are you working as a programmer?
Pretty happy. I was stuck for ahwile on php, and then found out you can do stuff in Python. So I can imagine that a switch of another language can make you happier. (Feeling like a beginner again and getting more confident by each thing you learn new).

Also, programmers like to create things, and if you're just maintaining projects, you're probably less happy. So for me moving from employee to freelance (creating over maintaining) increased happiness.
