samastur··on Show HN: Neobrutalism.dev – Just added Base UI support and added new color theme
Neo just means new. It's not an out-of-jail card if it is completely unrelated to the old/real thing.

looks awful (to provide a genuinely felt counter view)
samastur··on OpenAI’s Navier-Stokes release included a Lean 4 formal proof
Why do you assume they were vague? Do you imagine mathematicians work by stumbling around searching for accidental clues?
samastur··on Jason Arday, ex-Cambridge professor at centre of plagiarism row, found dead
Yes, we do.

He was a fabulist who certainly was more scrutinized because of his skin color, but it really shouldn’t be disputed that he plagiarized and lied profusely.

That doesn’t mean remotely he deserved this.

I also have little hope that everyone who contributed to this sordid tale, from Cambridge, police etc. will have to account for their profound failures.

samastur··on AI companies are shredding rare books
They are, but using the same process for all books is simpler and cheaper.
samastur··on A short history of Cerro Torre, the most controversial mountain (2012)
That's because there so much of them and most of the range is not very comfortably accessible (you usually need to endure some discomfort either getting there or staying nearby).

Where you can get nearby fairly easy like base Las Torres, you'll have plenty of people doing just that.

I don't think this is by intent. It's just that the countries themselves are relatively poor and have higher priority projects for their limited resources.

samastur··on Microsoft starts canceling Claude Code licenses
This works, thanks :)

For anyone else who may want this, use: export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-opus-4-6

samastur··on Microsoft starts canceling Claude Code licenses
How did you manage to do that?

/model command returns only 4 choices for me: Opus 4.7, two Sonnet options and Haiku.

samastur··on Modern CSS Code Snippets: Stop writing CSS like it's 2015
I am as well and there's no shortage of relevant content to fill my whole day so I can skip articles I dislike.
samastur··on Large-Scale Online Deanonymization with LLMs
Depends on what you want to say. It can be safer to say something directly to someone's face than online because it is transient and generally does not involve random passers-by.

I am not going to give examples, because I don't want them to be pinned on me as my views, but I'm sure most of us have enough imagination to come up with them.

samastur··on Modern CSS Code Snippets: Stop writing CSS like it's 2015
Read something else then.
samastur··on How I estimate work
I used to work for a company where we spent a day every 2 weeks doing this. And I had a headache at the end of the day every two weeks.

Great that it works for you.

samastur··on Want to sway an election? Here’s how much fake online accounts cost
EU has been a neighbour of Russia since a very long time as Finland joined EU in 1995. Not being a neighbour hasn’t been an option in a very long time as there are now several countries bordering it. Beside EU is not a military alliance so why should it matter?

Russia has only ever expanded, but since you seem to be wrong just about everything no surprise there.

samastur··on OpenAI Needs $400B In The Next 12 Months
This highly depends on the price difference and value you get form those 10%.
samastur··on Sora Update #1
they will TRY to share this money ;)
samastur··on Melvyn Bragg steps down from presenting In Our Time
I generally agree with you and the "short" format is what makes it successful, but Melvyn said himself that they choose teaching professors because they would know how to explain subject clearly and after almost two decades of listening I'd say it has mostly worked.
samastur··on How We Rooted Copilot
Paranoia and not knowing which ones fall into "mostly" category :)
samastur··on Doom Didn't Kill the Amiga (2024)
I did (but also for games). That wasn't the problem. The problem was computers built on closed architecture didn't have a future even if company didn't went to shit like Commodore did.
samastur··on Just how bad are we at treating age-related diseases?
Not being extremely deadly is low bar since most of your life (with some luck) will be spent being old. I'd rather see my years being more than bearable.
samastur··on Tipping: How Gratuity Replaced Fair Wages in U.S. Restaurants
They already are, it's just expected you calculate yourself the real price.
samastur··on Show HN: WhatsApp MCP Server
Cool work, but I'm more fascinated by your claim "99% of your life is stored in WhatsApp...".

Not even remotely true for me even if it would encompass all messaging apps I use. I guess I'm just an old introvert, but it makes me wonder how life looks like for those for whom it is true.

samastur··on Recreating Delicious Library in 2025?
Why would he, he buys bookmarking services and this won't be one :)
samastur··on Recreating Delicious Library in 2025?
I'm actually working on an app to replace my Delicious Library, but at least at first solely focused on books and supporting multiple users and features I missed in the original.

If all goes well I expect to have early version ready by middle of this year. While some features will require subscription, features not incurring ongoing costs won't. I like to think of it as an example of social software for introverts :)

I am hesitant to talk about details, but I haven't felt so excited about something in a long time.

samastur··on We're bringing Pebble back
Because we miss what Reader was and not what it could have become.

As a more prolific blog writer at the time I also liked that their bot would include number of people who were subscribed to my blog in their User Agent.

samastur··on DHS removes all members of cyber security advisory boards, halts investigations
Alphabet's revenue last year were about $340 billiion.

550 billion is just for compensation. You also need to pay for the upkeep of bases, fuel etc.

MI complex probably still has larger revenues as Google, but difference is much smaller than you think and that is comparing the whole industry to just one tech giant. There are others with revenues as big or bigger.

samastur··on DHS removes all members of cyber security advisory boards, halts investigations
The whole military-industrial complex (defense industry) has about the same yearly revenues as Google.

As others have already said, we Europeans do have central governments and there's fewer of us.

samastur··on I Met Paul Graham Once
Unisex bathrooms mean women get to clean the bathrooms again because men can't be bothered to aim or sit.
samastur··on UK's hardware talent is being wasted
This is a myth they tell themselves. USSR won by incredible amounts of American supplied material.
samastur··on Christopher Columbus may have been Spanish and Jewish, documentary says
I don't think it will take 500 years.
samastur··on How to delete your 23andMe data amid the company's turmoil
In general I don't particularly care what other people say on this topic and rely on the legal guidance I received during my work from UK ICO and Slovenian office, but even some of your links don't collaborate you. The second one linking to Verasafe's page on which it clearly says that yes, you should delete it.

There's a lot of complainig around how difficult that can be and the fact that EU legislation in general often does not like to precisely prescribe its requirements like what reasonable means, which can indeed be annoying.

You still need to remove it either directly or your retention policy for backups needs to be short enough that keeping it in backups for a while is judged as reasonable.
