saltylicorice··on How America's universities became debt factories
In 2001-2005, my rent was $120-$160/mo in a low cost area of the US. The places weren't fancy but they were good enough and safe.

Tuition started around 4k/yr, but had worked its way up to 8k/yr by the time I graduated (which I thought was unaffordable).

saltylicorice··on Google says replacing C/C++ in firmware with Rust is easy
Android engineers don't really speak for the whole of Google
saltylicorice··on Linus Torvalds flames Google kernel contributor over filesystem suggestion
Steven Rostedt has a long history of kernel contributions before joining Google and is likely better known for those.
saltylicorice··on PhpBB 3.3.10
I spent so many years on SA and Homebrewtalk and they were both such rich communities. Discord is nice and all (and seems to be where things are going) but there's something overwhelming about chat that was really cozy about forums.

(everything2 was incredible back when it was active and I really wish there was something like that again too)

saltylicorice··on Do hair transplants debunk the scalp tension-hair loss hypothesis? (2021)
I think this is quite dismissive and unnecessary. Suppose that someone wants to change their appearance for their own sake?
saltylicorice··on How to liberate a Chromebook
You don't have to open the case to go to developer mode.

If you want debug features without opening the case, there is https://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/ccd

saltylicorice··on How to liberate a Chromebook
You don’t have to replace the EEPROM. You can just open the case and briefly disconnnect the battery to disable write protect, and then flash whatever you like.
saltylicorice··on [dead]
Hard to figure out how to effectively challenge behavior like that from the rank and file, honestly.
saltylicorice··on IBM, a Pioneer of Remote Work, Calls Workers Back to the Office
My IBM office didn't have free coffee in 2005.
saltylicorice··on Making 20% Time Work
It's still alive.
saltylicorice··on Where are we in the Python 3 transition?
The problem is that the default argument is mutable.

  def f(a=[]):
    a.append('v')
    print a

  f(['ok']) # ['ok', 'v']
  f()       # ['v']
  f()       # ['v', 'v']
saltylicorice··on Passports Required for Some U.S. Domestic Travel in 2016?
Every state I've lived in has had photo IDs available for those without drivers licenses. They're still generally issued through the state's department of motor vehicles.

Here's CA for example: https://dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_cont...

saltylicorice··on Six years of Go
Pretty much.
saltylicorice··on Life in a Studio Apartment with My Wife and Two Sons
30 is very high. ~16-18 is a reasonable top end, and doesn't last very long (maybe 1-2 months at most).

saltylicorice··on Ask HN: Books with a high signal to noise ratio?
How to Solve It, by Polya.
saltylicorice··on I Let IBM’s Watson Tell Me What to Cook for a Week
It's pretty easy to sign up at https://www.ibmchefwatson.com/

It's free, and there's a pretty decent web UI once you're logged in.

saltylicorice··on Pinboard 2014 Expenses
Start paying for archiving then. :)
saltylicorice··on Poll: what smartphone do you use as your primary smartphone?
Moto X is pretty rad.
saltylicorice··on Show HN: My first Ludum Dare entry, online multiplayer game Hide-n-Stab
Cool concept, but ran into some crazy lag on kill events; another player and I must have stabbed each other 6 or 7 times before I died.
saltylicorice··on Ask HN: Is UML still relevant today?
No. Except maybe sequence diagrams.
saltylicorice··on Ballast: A tool for balancing user load across SSH servers
Horrible comma use in the description. You don't need either of 'em!
saltylicorice··on Show HN: ThreesJS – iOS game Threes for the browser
This is wonderful. Adding the soundtrack was a nice touch.
saltylicorice··on The brown note
Why?
saltylicorice··on Make the Type System Do the Work
No.
saltylicorice··on Why I'm Interested in Bitcoin
Setting up for bitcoin transactions is even easier and faster. I often see bitcoin addresses listed on github accounts, asking for a small tip. Also: http://www.reddit.com/r/bitcointip

I remember some years ago when people were getting excited about microtransactions, but nobody found a good way to make them work. It seems like Bitcoin might be a viable way of bringing the idea back.

saltylicorice··on "I have come to find out what it's like to be dumb."
Your experience mirrors mine. I chalk it up to your second option-- the power of distraction is strong. I haven't tried anything to confirm, it though.

You're not alone.
