salil999··on Google Docs adds tracking to links in document exports
> Doesn't seem fair does it? Is this about "leaving your chosen office suite" or "leaving Google".

How is it unfair if they allow their own websites which they maintain and develop to have no malware?

> Here's an interesting one. It gets allowed even though the HTTP cert has lapsed.

I doubt any human is going through and vetting every website. It's not a perfect system - I'm sure there will be websites through the cracks.

salil999··on Google Docs adds tracking to links in document exports
Google Docs has helped so many people and companies move forward with collaborative document writing and editing. How is that malicious?

salil999··on MongoDB’s new query engine

salil999··on MongoDB’s new query engine
This is completely false and has nothing to do with the article. DynamoDB and MongoDB might both serve JSON but they're used for wildly different things. DynamoDB is a key value store whereas MongoDB is much more than that.
salil999··on MongoDB’s new query engine
This is great and all but I'm curious on the performance improvements. I'm surprised there are no graphs or charts when show improvement in latency, CPU usage, disk reads, etc
salil999··on Ask HN: How do you manage your “family data warehouse”?
I guess that is a risk I'm accepting. For what it's worth, for photos specifically, Apple keeps them in a deleted folder for up to 30 days. But I'm pretty careful with my digital content and I would much rather them be synced.
salil999··on Ask HN: How do you manage your “family data warehouse”?
I guess the first question that comes to mind is what exactly are you trying to back up that can't work with iCloud?
salil999··on Ask HN: How do you manage your “family data warehouse”?
Apple solves this problem well! Note that I use iCloud family which allows me to share the storage with my family. But for going down the list:

A) Mint for most financials. iCloud for storage of documents.

B) Apple Health for keeping track of my records. For ad-hoc stuff I use iCloud to store the documents.

C) Product and service info I use iCloud for. Logins and credentials to them are stored in my family's 1Password vault.

D) All legal documents stored on iCloud.

E) For photos and videos I use iCloud Shared Albums. It's unlimited free online storage of photos. Otherwise it's a mix of iCloud storage and the Notes app on Apple devices.

Obviously you can tell I'm deep in the iCloud ecosystem but personally I feel it's worth it. The synchronization and ease of use for my family is well worth it. For what it's worth I'm on the 200GB plan.

salil999··on Tech Workers Deserve a Union: An Interview with Ethan Marcotte
The problem with looking at hourly pay is that I don't feel it applies well to the software industry. I can easily say there are some weeks where I have little to nothing to do and there are other weeks where I'm working a full day every day of the week.
salil999··on Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
I could totally see Apple turning the iPhone into a Nintendo Switch type device. You can connect it to your Apple TV (maybe even wirelessly) and stream games + play with a controller. The HW is definitely impressive.
salil999··on Apple should re-release Safari for Windows
Do you have proof nobody uses it? Quick Google search shows that it has slightly under 20% market share: https://gs.statcounter.com/browser-market-share
salil999··on A student-debt bubble fueled a housing bubble
I can see that point but I think in general the average American will not have a large and sufficient source of income. The article mentions how these firms are slowly raising the debt-to-income ratio to >50%. That's not because they're being nice - it's because they can trap more people into taking out enormous loans.
salil999··on A student-debt bubble fueled a housing bubble
This has been the case for about two decades now. I genuinely don't know how people who make a median income are surviving in the country.
salil999··on A design system for the federal government
Yeah this reply doesn't make sense. This is talking about design. You're talking about login. You can stretch it and say UX can be improved but even then it's not as relevant.
salil999··on A student-debt bubble fueled a housing bubble
I'm curious what people think a fix to this would be. My suggestion would be to have regulations on who is allowed to take on a loan. The ultimate decision can be done by the bank but some basic requirements can be enforced via policy.

salil999··on Software Engineering at Google (2020)
What a narrow minded view. This post and book has nothing to do with the product side of Google. You can argue about their products failing to gain traction in the market. But it's clear that Google is a leader in the software engineering industry. They have launched tons of tools and paradigms which has changed the way the entire software engineering industry works.

salil999··on Ask HN: How do you manage your passwords in 2023?
I had this same issue. Use a shared vault with OTP. Anyone with access to the vault can see the same 2FA code.

As for shared SMS, look into Google Voice. They automatically forward SMS texts to email as an option. I created a "shared" email account and gave my family access to that.

salil999··on Ask HN: How do you manage your passwords in 2023?
I wrote a small blog post on my journey and shared it not too long ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34181689

salil999··on My Age+Yubikeys Password Management Solution
This is an interesting way to do password management. But I definitely wouldn't describe this as "simple" or "minimal". You're using passage, Syncthing, restic, git, physical Yubikey, SD card, and don't have great support for mobile.
salil999··on Lastpass setting the delete account div to display: none
1Password is my personal choice. I can easily share passwords with my family and create separate vaults.

salil999··on Tell HN: AWS connectivity issues, but health dashboard says everything fine
Good luck convincing your company "Hey because they were 45 minutes late in informing us we need to move all our cloud to a different provider."

Updating a dashboard can easily be an automated process but for business reasons it is not. AWS did not "lie" about the incident - they are extremely transparent for all outages and disruptions (btw this was a disruption - not an outage). They stated on the issue the exact time frame for when the issue started and when it ended.

Is it bad they were late? Definitely. AWS has a history of being late due to the sheer scale it works at. I've caused an outage myself when I used to work there and updating the dashboard requires several higher ups to understand what exactly the issue is and what is considered to be worthy of "informing of an incident." These processes take time. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But there are legitimate reasons for it.

I'm not sure why you think Jeff is involved here. This kind of disruption isn't enough to warrant someone as high as Jeff to be involved.

As for SLA violations, AWS public SLAs for every service and they credit your account if it ever dips below those defined thresholds. And as for caring I don't know a single cloud provider with the level of great customer support AWS has. This is extremely opinionated but this is what I've observed in the industry.

I would recommend people to use AWS monitoring. But having some of your own basic internal dashboards / metrics is also worth having.

salil999··on Privacy respecting weather app for Android
> For a weather app that would mean not sending my location data anywhere, but also not sending the locations I want the weather for anywhere either since if you know that most of the time you'll be able to tell where I am or where I will be.

This doesn't even make sense. How do you want a weather app to not send "locations you want the weather for"?

Also, updating a local copy of every weather place on the planet doesn't scale at all. There's so many places that it won't fit on a single device.
