saladuh··on Revolt: Open-source alternative to Discord
This is awesome and all, but I don't understand how it will support itself? Unlike Matrix which has plenty of money from government contracts (and venture capitalist money, which kinda sucks but whatever), I don't see how a centralised chat platform with video, voice, data rich messages, etc. relying on donations can support a large user base without one day compromising on privacy respecting data collection.

With Matrix, everyone can help share the load by setting up their own homeservers, if they want to. Plus, P2P is going to be part of the protocol at some point with embedded servers in the clients.

So what's the monetisation strategy? I wish they were more upfront about that, even if the answer was "we have no idea yet". And if the plan is not to monetise, an answer as to how a centralised server with high demand will keep up with capacity would be appreciated.

saladuh··on Revolt: Open-source alternative to Discord
Just wanted to point out that Matrix is getting native voice/video calls (for multi people, it already works with 1:1 calls) soon, as well as voice rooms (they've already been designed and the design shown off, just not implemented yet).

Not to come off like an ass, but honestly when I read 'rust' I laughed. If you knew how the founders of Sway feel about rust + the difficulties people have had with creating rust wayland compositors (particularly with wlroots), the idea of Sway being quoted as written in rust is almost satirical

Cozette covers the most AFAIK. Really good for symbols and such in a highly customised neovim setup.

On Linux, I found it to be super slow. TUI apps like neovim were sluggish in certain contexts. I couldn't figure out how to increase text throughput either. The developer seems more focussed on maintaining MacOS performance (I'm not complaining, just warning any linux users).
saladuh··on Darktile – GPU rendered terminal emulator designed for tiling window managers
It does indeed support Sixels, and is super fast too. Also, the official build only runs on Wayland afaik (my friend tried to build it from source in xorg but during compilation it would check for a wayland environment and then fail). Pretty sure there was an xorg port floating around somewhere though.

Not that I know of. Could have a look through the nextcloud marketplace for something or another. Tbh, I don't see any open platforms having Google/Apple photos kind of functionality for at least a little bit. Google and Apple trained their algorithms on the people using their free tiers for years. Google especially had access to so much information on the user using Google Photos that it was able to build the algorithms it has today. For an open platform to have this functionality, it would need to wait for an open source model/algorithm to exist, else it would need to build it itself by using user data (no E2EE then).

Unless Google open sourced whatever models it uses in Google Photos today, don't expect this level of searchability yet. Actually even if Google did, it would probably be so tied to Google user information and be incompatible with E2EE.

> without the ability to self host is a dead end

Indeed, this is why you would be foolish to use Ente as you cannot self host it. At any point they can choose to lock things down, make their clients closed source, etc etc, and you'd once again need to spend time jumping ship because you'd need to find a new ecosystem.

Ente is just convient and is coming at the right time (hence the massive amount of upvotes) but does not give you total control nor your freedom back. Using them instead of something you can self host is just running in circles.

> open source may suck...

What? This was extremely random and out of place with the rest of your comment.

What you really want, if you care about self hosting and all the other stuff you mentioned, is Nextcloud[0]. And if you don't want to self host yet, you'd be better off hosting Nextcloud in a VPS, even on Linode you can just 1 click deploy a Nextcloud instance in their app store[1]. That way you don't become dependent on a service you cannot control/deploy yourself.

Maya crashes all the time. Go on any social media and search 'maya crash' and you'll find plenty of art students and hobbyists complaining about how often it crashes, some losing their work. I even read from one artist I follow that at their university a lecturer told his students to expect Maya to crash, and prepare for it.

I just wanted to point out that your lockups and crashes in Blender have nothing to do with it being open source and probably more to do with its complexity. Not saying you were trying to make out that because it's foss that's why it crashes, but seeing as this comment thread branched from that argument I just wanted to point this out.

My friend's been running LineageOS with Microg[0], I'm waiting on a Pixel so I can run CalyxOS (with Microg) because I'm not keen on the security downsides of Lineage. He says it's been an incredibly stable set up. GrapheneOS is a great alternative to Calyx from what I've read, if you rely less on play store apps that require google Android APIs (that Microg also implements). GrapheneOS vs CalyxOS is a trade between convience+pretty good privacy (Calyx) and better security+privacy (GrapheneOS, as when you do use proprietary apps relying on Gapps it's all sandboxed).

saladuh··on Discord has won over gamers. Now it wants everybody else
(So this turned into a log rant... sorry)

Nope, sadly not! People are complacent and unwilling to make a change due to the convience of it. Most people are unwilling to leave the online friends behind that refuse to join you on more ethical platforms. People become tied to communities, of which most are on Discord, and are unwilling to leave them out of fear of feeling alone, or because they require whatever feelings of happiness/dopamine they get from those communities.

I used discord primarily for a large friend group, on one guild/server, but of course was in a bunch of other servers for things that were ultimately useless. Leaving Discord made me feel less controlled by the dopamine effect of interacting with 'communities'. My friends barely use discord for anything other than our friend group, but are unwilling to move off of it because 'pretty UI', or 'emojis', or 'bots', etc. Some of them "don't care about privacy" because "no one at discord cares about your messages/data", " I have nothing to hide", the usual fallacies regarding privacy. The last reason is "laze"/"don't care".

My friends are all in the tech/software space, have careers or are aiming for careers in the space. Some of them even share posts from Hacker News on the regular. Some use Linux, one of them even uses it partly out of privacy concerns. Point is, they're not oblivious to this stuff. If anyone begins to start trying out other services with me like Matrix, they're immediately disuaded because someone else in the group doesn't want to and says they're never going to leave Discord.

I've since just been using a Matrix bridge to continue being part of the group. I've decided though that I will have no part in Discord's increasing monopoly in the chat message space, with their walled garden practices. Once Matrix native voice and video chat rolls out, I'm done with the Matrix-Discord bridge. If my friends don't want to make ethical decisions and put themselves back in control of their online lives and data, then I lose my online group chat. So be it. I'll still see them out in the real world. Friends (for better or worse) come and go every decade. Sucks but I'm so done with no one caring and having to jump through hoops for people who don't care.

> Element

Fyi in case anyone reading this didn't know, Element is a client for the Matrix protocol, by the people who are the prominent developers and supporters for the Matrix Foundation.

Matrix only has inbuilt support for 1 on 1 calls right now, it (Element) uses Jitsi for group/channel calls. Native Matrix group calls and video calls are coming very soon, along with (hopefully) push to talk in the Element client, and custom emoji for those who like that stuff.

Are you absolutely sure that's the case? The OP in that reddit post seemed to suggest that he had toggled off game detection and whatnot. Scroll down to the thread where the deleted comments are.
saladuh··on ‘Extraordinary’ hacking powers pass Australian Parliament
Same, on the fdroid build. I just put in an obviously, nonsensical email.
saladuh··on ‘Extraordinary’ hacking powers pass Australian Parliament
Yes, most are. In general Australians are apolitical and only seem 'freedom loving' in nature, behaviour. Most don't care or give a damn about politics, abuses of power, etc. I'm pretty conflicted myself about the lockdowns. People are scared of getting the virus. Our federal government was incompetent at preventing the virus from entering, kept the borders open for too long because "muh economy", and the result was all these lockdowns and procedures. Protestors are looked down upon by the general public due to the lockdowns, whether protests are regarding political policy or the lockdowns themselves.

I am of course against wrongful online surveillance such as this new passed legislation, but when it comes to the lockdowns I don't know where I stand. I just hope lockdowns end as our vaccine roleouts start. One thing I know for sure though is that I will not be staying in this country for too much longer, if I can avoid it.

saladuh··on The Search for a Free/Open Source Mobile Operating System
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing this. I didn't know we were this close to viable linux phones. There's those tiny handful of android apps you may need and this pretty much solves it. I wonder if microg is working in waydroid? I'd assume it's possible.
saladuh··on Google considered coordinated, multinational hostile takeover attempt of Epic
Okay this is probably a stupid question, but how would Google go about doing this when Tim Sweeney is adamant that he owns over 50% of Epic's shares and Tencent only has a 'non-controlling' (as Sweeney has said in the past) 40%? As Epic is a private company, I don't understand how this is possible, but then again I'm not well versed in this stuff at all.
saladuh··on Duolingo reaches $6.5B valuation on day of IPO
If anyone's planning on learning Japanese with Duolingo: don't. Did that for a few weeks, basically learnt nothing. I soon found out from experienced learners that it was terrible [0]. I then discovered the AJATT/MIA[1] methods of learning Japanese, which prioritize immersion/sentence mining of the target language and learning vocab/kanji and sentence structure through Anki decks (you can use any SRS system but Anki is by far the best with a rich ecosystem of Japanese integrations such as the Yomichan dictionary).

I used the foss app Kakugo (available on Fdroid, not sure about the play store) to learn the hiragana and katakana writing scripts in 3 or 4 days, and have now moved on to reading Tae Kim's Grammar Guide[2] for learning grammar and using Refold JP1K[3][4] style anki decks to learn my first 1000 kanji.

However this method is more of a 'grind', you need to set aside at least 2 hours a day so that you can read Tae's textbook, learn new vocab and do your reviews through Anki. In your free time, once you have a decent amount of grammar understanding and vocab, you need to be immersing in Japanese, so anime, J-dramas, etc. (Jap music isn't very helpful here).

[0] Review of Duolingo Japanese course from a 2+ year user of Anki/immersion based learning: https://youtu.be/jf-SbSfiXn4 [1] The AJATT method has been around for a long time, it means All Japanese All The Time. It basically promoted SRS and immersion based learning. MIA is basically the same thing, mass immersion, started mainly by MattVsJapan. However I use the guides and tools created by AJATT-Tools, whos contributors focus on tools for Linux, such as MPV scripts for sentence mining (creating Anki cards with unknown vocabulary semi automatically while watching subtitled content, with audio and visual cues). Their guide builds on top of MIA and AJATT style methods: https://github.com/ajatt-tools [2] The defacto grammar guide for Japanese that isn't afraid to teach you Kanji from the start: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar [3] Explanation of the JP1K style Anki deck: https://youtu.be/53qKsYxVhoM [4] Deck system is created by https://refold.la, however I use AJATT-Tools's version of the deck because it includes example sentences (and Kanji have different meanings in context).

saladuh··on Valve Steam Deck
Steam input. If a game supports steam input, the developers can create a mapping for controllers that is automatically loaded for users using a controller. You're also free to modify these layouts in the comprehensive steam input UI provided. People can also share their mappings for a specific game which anyone can select in the community section for that game's steam input menu. Often times community mappings will be better than developer created mappings, and the community mappings have a rating system so you just search by highest rated or most downloads etc. The best part about steam input is that it makes enabling gyro support easy as, so long as the game supports simultaneous mouse and controller input at the same time (which Valve exclaims to developers in the steamworks documentation to make this possible).
saladuh··on Creep – a pretty sweet 4px wide pixel font
If anyone's looking for a bitmap/pixel font that covers many symbols, including all necessary powerline symbols and a large portion of the various nerd font symbols, I can't recommend Cozette[0] enough. Recently the author has began updating and releasing new versions after a hiatus. Also, if you use the otf version of the font instead of the bitmap/otb version you can still get it to look like a pixel perfect bitmap font by setting the font to a specific size in the application, usually size 9 or 9.5 depending on the app or terminal.

saladuh··on I do not agree with Github's use of copyrighted code as training for Copilot
I think what is upsetting to those who create free[0] software, particularly GPLed works, is that their code has been used to create something that is non-free, which they have no control over (and thus takes away all the 4 freedoms).

As such I really don't understand why so many people are saying things like you have said here. These people believing in free software, including the original intent of the GPL to be a tool against copyright, does not mean they should, or would, be all for co-pilot, a non-free product by a company that once spat in the face of free software (and likely still does behind closed doors), who is using their free software, including the GPLed works, to create a non-free software.

As such, even if it ends up being legal from a license standpoint, it really feels like copyleft is being taken advantage of and exploited because nothing is given back in return (even if copilot remained free of charge, that's hardly giving back in foss lingo). So I suppose it's more a moral and intent thing rather than a legal thing at this point, unless copyright law decides copilot is a derivative work (doubtful, personally).

> Unless my recollection is off, the GPL was never the goal of the original Free Software movement; it was merely a tool to get to the end state where all code becomes available for use by anyone for any reason without cost or restriction.

Yes, but the GPL was created for a world with copyright to step towards a world without it. However we are extremely far away from such a world, and I don't see how copilot helps step towards it at all. I just don't see the argument. It just results in code that will be used potentially wrongly in copyrighted works, proprietary or not. And all of this is enabled by, as I mentioned, a non-free software created by Microsoft, who have used their huge capital to gain access to a proprietary AI by throwing money at it. Nothing about it seems fair even if it ends up all being legal in copyright terms.

[0] I'm seeing a lot of people in these threads who don't know the definition of free software or open source. Free software referes to free as in freedom, not free as in 'free beer' (gratis). Of course, free software is still often gratis, but you can still monetize it in various ways.

saladuh··on Migadu – No-nonsense multi-domain email at a flat price
Yep, if you contact them about it they'll provide you with more info. Both CardDAV and CalDAV will be available, documented and all, to the public in September/October. When I emailed them earlier today about it (pure coincidence) they gave me the necessary info on CardDAV and also directed me to a post[0] made by another beta tester explaining both DAV services in more detail.
