salad-tycoon··on Meta Horizon Worlds on Meta Quest is being discontinued
Personally, I find it refreshing that he’s one of the only ultra large CEOs that’s willing to go big or go broke. Otherwise, you end up with fossilized X trillion dollar company that amounts to a combination of safe haven/growth stock for retirement accounts and whose innovations amount to little more than finding pretty ways to machine different types of metal cases and who seemingly has entire research teams dedicated to discovering various new shades of grey every year. (This take isn’t fair to Apple, tbh, but they have gotten booooring under Tim Cook.)

Small annoyance, the team name is missing an E.

Wish they had gone with The Human Enterologic Flatulence Atlas Research Team.

salad-tycoon··on Elon Musk pushes out more xAI founders as AI coding effort falters
Epstein files. State actors, company security departments, activists, etc influence and seemingly control the more meaningful/controversial Wikipedia sections.

I think it’s just an inherent flaw in ANY centralized and universal repository of knowledge.

I haven’t actually ever been on grokipedia but I’m sure Elon influences it, I mean if I paid for something I’d expect it to be to my liking too.

salad-tycoon··on The L in "LLM" Stands for Lying
Agreed, I think the good gained by wool mills is greater in that little Timmy is less likely to lose a leg to frostbite than the bad loss of my scarf not passing through a ring.

Long term though, I’ve always wondered if the Amish turn out to be the only survivors.

salad-tycoon··on Claude is an Electron App because we've lost native
I don’t code, so I’m well out of my league but this point of “premier coding AI company should showcase its capabilities by using their own model to build superior software” rings true to me, right? Especially as we start to discuss AI as more dangerous than nuclear weapons yet it can’t even do that?

Who’s got the rebuttal to this?

salad-tycoon··on Will AI be the basis of many future industrial fortunes, or a net loser?
My 8 & 6 year old have spent 2 weeks digging a hole out in our little forest. It has been one of the most bonding & therapeutic things in them I’ve witnessed. They’ve developed stories, they go out and dig after school or when they are upset, etc.

Give a boy a shovel, step back & witness unbridled creativity.

More ridiculous is that a dome light should be able to drain an entire car battery in the first place. I have 18650s powered handhelds that can do days.

A lot could change in the future and what’s the worse they could do? A billiokn dollar fine? Bold, do it and ask for forgiveness later.
salad-tycoon··on OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are struggling to build more advanced AI
That’s a lot of weight on RTO and why it’s being implementing. A company is fully able to have you RTO, maybe even move, and fire you next day/month/year and desiring increased teamwork is not mutually exclusive of preparing for lay offs. Plus, I imagine at these companies there are multiple hands all doing things for their own purpose and metrics without knowing what the other hand is doing.Mid level Jan’s Christmas bonus depends on responding to exit interviews measurements showing workers leaving due to lack of teamwork, Bobs bonus depends on quickly implementing the code.

salad-tycoon··on NotebookLM is quite powerful and worth playing with
It goes beyond the concept of a notebook summary as it will add in lots of filter material. Humorous examples abound, typing a single ridiculous sentence into it seems that the podcast must fill in a certain amount of time. I’d rather it just do my notes and not veer off.

salad-tycoon··on Timeshare owner? The Mexican drug cartels want you
Went to one once, one of the kids pooped. It was a bad one. The sales team wanted to keep going even as they enveloped by an incredibly thick stinky pungent hazardous stench. Real focus, reminded me of the movie quote “ABC always be closing.” Was interesting to be on the receiving end, a lot to study and not just the offers of “amazing places” but more so in terms of presentation and tactics. Leave your pocket book at home but everyone should experience one. (Oh yeah, didn’t sign of course, the rental locations were all on air bnb but cheaper and with none of the extra fees that they would have charged forever. Ha. Woops.)

Pretty sure cod liver oil has vitamin A. Used to be a treatment for measles and rickets and others because of its vitamin A contents.

You can use an Apple Watch and it might eventually catch it or if you have pulse oximeter you can watch the pulse wave or you can just feel for it at your wrist, carotid neck, or left peck. You want a steady beat, you can tell if there is a pause.

Probably the best way, other than a medical Holter monitor that you wear and a cardiologist reviews, would be to buy a chest strap that can independently record and you can review the rhythm. Look up PVC, PAC EKG.

Some premature contractions are normal. Nothing to go off on a tangent if you catch one in blue moon.

All that said, you will probably just feel a small kick in the chest and the above is unnecessary. Some people tend to anxiously get into these things without reason but the above can help with gathering evidence for your doctor if you suspect a problem that doesn’t go away with stopping supplements or coffee or booze etc. as sometimes heart things can be transient and hard to catch out of the moment. Palpitations can be caused by A LOT of things, I’ve noticed them from coq10, but there are so many other possibilities that it’s not necessarily something you want to self hack if you really do have a problem.

Some people can’t, I don’t understand how but they do exist.

Take this with a grain of salt and consider that my source sells supplements but I first heard about this on nootropic depot. Looking on other reputable vendors, they do seem to include fruiting body and mycelium. Supposedly, ND only does the fruiting body. Now is that better? Haven’t gotten that far independently but they have a write up.

I’m not paid by them, and think they overcharge, but the internet seems to trust them (but they have a lot of guerilla Reddit marketing on their subreddit). Maybe this info will save someone time.

salad-tycoon··on Dumped orange peel transformed a barren pasture (2017)
Assuming and making up numbers for pesticide XYZ degrades in 6 months.

First what is degrades is that 100% or 50%? Is that based on just because it’s no longer effective? Does your statement change if considering dumping huge amounts in a highly concentrated area? Does that concentrate what small percentage remains after 6 months, 6 years etc and does that change the conditions of decay for the stuff at the bottom of the pile, middle, top?

Just seems like dumping a 1000 trucks worth of something might introduce some new factors into the equation. But yeah, I’d be more worried about living near or down stream of a rotting orange sludge landfill that’s pulsating with fly larvae I guess in the end than the pesticides, not that people who tend to live near these dump sites really have a choice one way or another.

salad-tycoon··on How the iPhone 16's electrically-released adhesive works
It makes me happy to live in a world where scores of intelligent people dedicate their lives to creating a magnum opus and end up with glue. Beautiful. Sure, we don’t really build cathedrals anymore but at least the world of adhesives (and packaging) is thriving.

A lot of interesting and informative rebuttals to this comment but no one anticipated the obvious counter argument.

Businesses only ever need two $10 domains, usercompany.com and company.com, just in case they ever want to host user generated content.

Screen protectors have gotten much better and much cheaper, especially for anything other than the latest model.

In any case, sounds like you have a lifestyle that doesn’t require one.

I depend on them. Really can’t tell a difference anymore with regards to feel, hue/light etc.

salad-tycoon··on Can eating less beef and dairy help save the Colorado River?
Well, NPR has one view. I posit another, substantial amounts of these crops are exported to water/land poor regions (Asia / ME). I view it more akin to exporting water than hay.

NPR:” But for much of the year, the region’s primary crops are alfalfa and other hay crops, which have one primary purpose: feeding beef and dairy cows in the U.S. and around the world”

1: amounts doubled from 2007 to 2017. ”US is the lead exporter, and exports are now greater than the equivalent of 17% of the alfalfa and 41% of the grass hays produced in the 7 western US states. “

Per this USDA report (2) looks like numbers peaked 2021-2022, good overview of who’s buying here.

Our hay exports have risen 2193% over 10 years to Saudi Arabia (3)

And not exactly related to my argument, but it’s not far off, here’s a fun number: exports of beef to China has gone up over the last 10 years by 593949% (4). Obviously cherry picked for the large number, but dannnggg.

If I were doing more research I’d be including soybeans and corn as well.

I’ll admit my views are in part due to living in AZ and driving through wonderful desert areas littered with alfalfa fields and other water intensive crops. Never made sense. (That and lawns, having a rock front yard was great. Oh and the multitude of world class golf courses.) At the time I was told a lot of those fields were owned by Saudis who exported it.

I surprised an 18 year old, intelligent and fairly tech savvy, when I showed him the share>find on page search function in Safari. Figured everyone knew that, or at least he and his demo would. No idea how wide spread it is, anecdotal etc.
