saiya-jin··on Alexei Navalny has died
Care to provide some links apart from 'they said it on fox news'? Its exactly the type of narrative putin would like to push to marginalize another high profile murder, and we have seen he can be an expert with playing foreign powers and media against each other
saiya-jin··on Smoking has long-term effects on the immune system
If forcing oneself to just walk for 20 mins (thats a lazy 1km, I've managed to walk cca 3km 2 weeks ago with broken foot and ripped ligament through wild forest) is too much, good luck with convincing anybody with such mentality that now is the real "no eat" time, consistently.
saiya-jin··on Smoking has long-term effects on the immune system
> I think you did well saying you cross the street, but then suggested that I solve your problem for you, how entitled, you are annoyed by smoking and I have to go in the cage, I could say, if you are annoyed by people smoking wear a mask or stay at home

Cigarette smokers, they never to stop amazing me how arrogant and self-centered many of them are when talking about actual topics.

Its btw a great way to find out who you are really dealing with - anybody can produce sweet talk on demand if they have a clear goal. Stub their toe with say some hard addiction of theirs and personalities surface very quickly

saiya-jin··on Smoking has long-term effects on the immune system
Occasionally smelling my poop won't harm you neither, shall we presume based on your words you shall be fine with it in any public occasion? And well if you don't like that you can stay comfy at home too, right.

Because you know, to most non-smokers we would prefer smell of literal manure to what smokers of cigarettes produce.

And no amount of whataboutism about car fumes is gonna change that, thats a poor attempt to diverge conversation.

saiya-jin··on Satya Nadella uses an IBM AS/400 in 1993
You don't understand where AS-400 real power comes from. DB integrated directly into filesystem, you optimize your work for how the whole system has been designed and get massive benefits and robustness.

Performance between junior basic code and heavily optimized complex queries even on just Oracle can be 1000x easily, just ask any data warehouse guy (seen it few times myself even though I don't do warehouses). You can maybe add another 0 for AS-400 there in extreme cases.

Yes if you end up doing things wrong and expect that CPU to do some heavy math then yes this will be dusted quickly. Otherwise, not so much.

But this goes against most modern 'SV principles' so I don't expect much love from younger generations here. Business love that though, and secretly wish all IT could be as reliable and predictable as them although that ship has sailed long time ago. One of those 'they don't do them like good old times anymore'.

saiya-jin··on Apple confirms it's breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose
Well, this is just 'we don't want to do it because our market projections steer us in a different direction, but we really don't have any solid arguments so here is some blah our marketing & legal came up with'.

3 trillion company can implement this without breaking a sweat properly if they cared, what are they trying to say here - 'we are incompetent'? Not buying that for a second, we know they can deliver.

saiya-jin··on Apple on course to break all Web Apps in EU within 20 days
Half of this forum works or worked for them, those can't and won't be objective (I never ever read any internal scorching criticism here unlike every other FAANG, which is unavoidable in such a ultra massive corporation).

Rest have probably some long held stocks or some obscure blind patriotism (which patriotism isn't blind). If you look for objectivity on Apple, this forum is as far as one can get on a web not containing the fruit name in its URL.

saiya-jin··on Nanoplastics in water – surprisingly large amounts discovered and its not good
They did exist, and so did various cancers, albeit in lesser concentrations. People mostly died younger and nobody cared nor investigated.

And its not that big mystery - people got properly dumb and do literally everything to destroy themselves, and completely ignore advices coming from every direction about healthy living. Its not 'they evil corps', is us(them) dumb shits who can't act like balanced mature adults and contain those few vices you may gather as life goes along. You can't tackle all of it, but most folks are not even trying and just complain.

A random example - all guys everywhere would massively benefit from consistently wearing loose pants and underwear if they want to increase their fertility, especially in summer. It would skyrocket in stats. Now show me how popular this 'simple trick' is in mass media. There, maybe 30% of couple infertility cases tackled.

I don't want to downplay the topic, the idea that nano-plastic-infested meat is grilled/cooked/even just boiled and eaten by literally everybody... we know what great things high heat does to all plastics, and eating that yummy is probably a bullet train to ruined health decades down the line.

saiya-jin··on Protein biomarkers predict dementia 15 years before diagnosis in new study
Sleep, maybe meditation, keep learning new challenging stuff (within given cognitive possibilities).

Brain is a 'muscle' so keep pushing at it, continuously, you can only help it.

saiya-jin··on Bioluminescent petunias now available for U.S. market
Well they themselves mention up to 100x enhancement in original bio luminescence. When you start with something absolutely invisible to naked eye in pitch black even after some time, 100x ain't that much.
saiya-jin··on Git tips and tricks
This generic statements can be said about basically any technology (MS MFC anybody? (L)DAP? IBM Websphere studio J2EE abominations?) if you are smart enough / have enough time to dig around. It doesn't help discussion at all (and plenty of folks complain about git all the time), since one can't avoid being branded as lazy/stupid if its not grokking this uber important yet trivial tool like me (TM).

But then there is Mercurial, used it decade and a half ago and it contained literally everything good about distributed model I could ever wish for, with maybe 50% of Git's complexity. Yet cargo-culting gonna cargo-cult, if Linus uses it so must we since we are not subpar and the rest be damned.

Yes sure its the tool to stay, and eventually can be learned well. But its design is far, very far from the most important software design principle (KISS).

saiya-jin··on Mystery monk makes billions with 5-hour energy (2012)
I am sure they do/did but this still doesn't match resulting reality. By financial swings he does, he has 1-2 mil euros of disposable cash, on top of that vast amount of flats. Judging by his age and career path, he had to amass most of it (80-90%) within less than a decade.

No German bank is going to give you 100% mortgage (in fact 110-120% for taxes/fees/additional reconstruction) when you already have 10 properties mortgaged in exactly same way. You also don't build any cash reserve like that, owning properties is always more costly than financial projections make it so.

At the end it doesn't matter, good for him (apart from everything that makes a man the man) but his vague background story as told simply ain't true, and folks were eating all that till I came along and thought about numbers for few seconds.

I have one such in extended family. Not a stellar personality (while he thinks he is a rockstar with amazing life, folks are mostly fed up with him and he is raising at least 2 kids with 2 separate women he doesn't date/isn't married anymore).

Anyway he owns and does long term rental of maybe 20-30 apartments mostly in Munich (not airbnb or similar). No problem for him buying additional apartments and houses in very expensive places across Europe on spur (or recently Egypt). Also some old sports cars etc. Yet often a penny pincher when it comes to investing into relationship.

The weird part is, when asked what he was doing before becoming a rentier, 'he had some manager job', in Germany. Now I haven't lived there specifically but I know net salaries don't go that high if you work for somebody else, and taxes and social deductions are brutal. This ain't US where 10x performance can give you 10x salary if you do it right and are lucky. And he ain't a C-suite material.

He keeps claiming its all just his own effort but I just can't calculate a realistic path where even a highly capable person can get in their early 40s such vast net worth from 0 (I could grok some lucky exponential path via airbnbs but thats not what he does).

This is a very conservative investment path of ending up with maybe 2-3 apartments if you really push it hard and do all the right choices at the right time. So he is either laundering money for some mafia/gang (but certainly doesn't seem like so) or got a small help from family initially and refuses to admit that.

Nobody thought about that until I came along and just wondered about those numbers a bit.

saiya-jin··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
This is spot on. White collar dev folks whine how life is hard since they can't own their house close to their work, and rest of mankind just chugs along. HN is a massive echo chamber in many topics like Apple and I suspect this is another one.
saiya-jin··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
Ah yes the good ol' trope of putting house ownership as basic human right, ideally just for me and right after the buy I expect the price to jump to 3x. If you don't have one, you are such a loser, a failure, how can you look at yourself in the mirror?

Completely idiotic approach of cargo-culting previous generations without a pinch of logic. There are highly developed countries (as in overall higher than US, say here in Switzerland) where this mindset is absent long term. Thus most population lives in rent for whole life, nobody is bothered by it, and generally Swiss are among the happiest nations in the world, consistently.

That isn't saying child births here are booming, in contrary, but that has absolutely nothing to do with home ownership and being priced out from owning homes. People simply grok how difficult raising even 2 children well is (as in by far the most difficult project you will ever do, spread over 20-25 years of consistent draining efforts with no guarantee of success even with best effort, while you also need to put some good effort into marriage too), society not really helping that much these days, and decide against it.

Don't blame them, as Bill Burr says there are simply too many people. Rather lets lift whole mankind from poverty and the topic of population explosion will vanish on its own.

saiya-jin··on 'Baby Bust': Why Fewer Young People Expect to Become Parents (2013)
> where raising a child requires sacrifices much greater than it does in the West

This part ain't correct, if you actually traveled properly in such places you would find much better community/family support for raising kids compared to typical western young couple situation. I ain't saying every single young family is better off like this, but on average the difference is often staggering.

What I mean - for us, both having high intensity jobs that required 17+ years of hard studies and moving across various parts of Europe, going from couple/married but without children into having 2 small kids a massive shock in every single aspect of life since we raise them largely on our own, families are very far. Families in such places face on average significantly less shock in such situation, mostly they continue in their lives as before (the guy) and women take care of kids for some time as is expected. Of course this is slowly changing into that western model as people get better white collar jobs in big cities.

saiya-jin··on Lessons from a fountain pen addict
Thats how I went through whole primary (and possibly secondary, don't recall really) school. Fingers always having multiple dark blue spots, just like every other kid.

These pens are much better for learning to write, since you don't need to apply almost any pressure compared to ball pens. Also, we started with cursive writing, so most words could be drawn in 1 single line, again much easier and intuitive than ball pen.

saiya-jin··on London Underground is testing real-time AI surveillance tools to spot crime
So social graph and hobbies/passions is not enough to monetize, they want all your shopping history, habits, quirks etc., on camera to be analyzed to death? Nobody sees this as privacy and security problem in 2024?

I get that Bezos is an obsessive penny-pincher and thats part of his success (and fucked up persona that leaves a lot to be desired), but please allow me to politely say Hell fuck no, I'll give premium to competition that just doesn't have this. I can't imagine this being OK in EU, but then again we don't talk about EU standards here anymore. I wonder what makes British population OK with this, its not like we talk about former East Germany.

saiya-jin··on Could a giant parasol in outer space help solve the climate crisis?
I mean yeah, lets destroy our civilization (or whole mankind, who knows what desperate collapsing nations with nuclear weapons will do) as we know it so that we won't risk breathing 0.3% higher co2 concentration, seems logical. We would be such losers to use some simple cheap trick to give us some time to figure things out.
saiya-jin··on Apple is lobbying against right to repair 6 months after supporting it
Anybody actually buying some corporate PR? People call bullshit from other corporations from light years but when it comes to Apple folks here act like half of forum works for them...

Just look at their actions, ignore words from marketing teams (ie everything that goes officially outside to us). FU to freedom, openness, and laser focus on what generates revenues, we know whats better for you and your rightfully bought devices. If you disagree you will lose warranty, we kick you out of our platforms or worse, much worse.

Self-repairs and everything proprietary were pain point for all Apple devices for decade and a half. All efforts in privacy I saw were carefully crafted PR with some tiny logical loophole that for sure won't be misused by some 3-letter agencies, we pinky promise wink wink.

Really, why the surprise?

saiya-jin··on The Triumph and Terror of Wang Huning
Because its easy work, especially if you want to follow already set narrative.

Why show how things can work in capitalism if population is smart, hard working, moral, and government is small and effective? With parts having tons of independence? Thats literally the opposite of their system.

You can't bring the proverbial evils of capitalism when talking about happiest societies in the world, which both are based on capitalism and personal freedom.

saiya-jin··on 2024 Kawasaki Ninja 7 hybrid motorcycle first ride review
A freaking small electric scooter caught fire recently, it took fire department few hours to even contain it, they were not able to actually put out flames.

Maybe less than ideal procedure, but electric stuff getting on fire is a massive risk and regulators recognize it as such, especially when not out in the open.

saiya-jin··on Thirteen Ways of Looking at Art
I come to art for a very different reason than modern art tries to press on me and emotions they try to evoke in me. I simply refuse to play that game, have herd mentality and just accept opinions and emotions of others.

Maybe I was spoiled by art of folks like Rembrandt or Vermeer viewed in museums, I like this form of art, I like seeing proper multiyear effort of struggling artist recognized only long after death and the resulting beauty, this sort of suffering always brings the best artist forward.

Especially compared to folks who pump their ass full of some color, spray that shit on canvas and sell it for millions. The only emotion in this is insult, and you definitely don't need art for that, daily news is enough. Literally everybody I ever asked this, from various professions and intellect and so on has roughly same opinion.

saiya-jin··on Early Apple Vision Pro adopters alarmed to learn VR porn doesn't work
A very tiny amount of porn customers are willing to shell 3500 for far from perfect goggles. Porn these days, unless peer-to-peer paid on ie tiktok, is about masses. Tiny revenue, but hundreds of millions cases.

Lonely hackers will make something work pretty quickly, but for very small market.

saiya-jin··on Cannabis use linked to anxiety diagnoses, worsened anxiety disorders
Because it is?

The problem is, you and tons of folk like you didn't read the fine print, because... who knows, ignorance? Fok ya all attitude of young? Even though all info is few clicks away at most.

It has been said 10 thousand times here and everywhere else, including quite a few posts by me - just don't do any mind altering drugs if you are not balanced +-happy person. There is no clear definition or dividing line, each of us is unique and should know how stable/unstable they are, if they have unresolved long term issues and so on. If folks can't be even honest in such things with themselves, well, life will be a tough walk in many aspects thats for sure.

For all those folks, if you do such things, you take tremendous risk, you may end up off better despite issues, but that's your Russian roulette with your own mind, don't complain that you risked massively and lost a huge gamble. These cases are not reference, unless say 50% of US population is by default anxious.

saiya-jin··on Cannabis use linked to anxiety diagnoses, worsened anxiety disorders
You both are correct, I've seen it countless times. Folks sometimes don't admit even to themselves how insecure and anxious they are. And THC will highlight that, sometimes a bit, sometimes massively. Same with alcohol, other drugs, intense stressful situations and so on.

If you are not anxious, this is no story, this won't bulge even after decades of copious consumption (some very close folks fall here and only here, no exception ever heard of).

Now if you are completely clueless or just a (again clueless) kid and say eat 5 space cakes to show off, yeah this will not be a nice story. 5-10 hours of catatonic despair will leave some mark, but this id self-inflicted harm due to stupidity, many wonderful harms and deaths have been caused by very same thing and if we want bans due to that, alcohol should be the first in line by huge margin.

Educate from childhood, regulate (age, potency, how much daily, optimize for harmless consumption of quality products without impurities), but otherwise let folks do their thing. Anything else leads long term to worse results for whole society, any gut feeling is easily beaten by long term statistics.

saiya-jin··on "Fake Chinese income" mortgages fuel Toronto real estate bubble: HSBC bank leaks
Look at any wiki article on any major global bank, the chapter about 'controversies and legal issues' is always a thick list, HSBC ain't worse or better than others.

There are no good guys there, that's not why the business was set up and corresponding folks were/are hired. If you want more controls, enforce more regulations, they do work if well defined.
