sailorganymede··on Nobody has a personality anymore: we are products with labels
Use a timer like the rest of us. There are solutions to the problem
sailorganymede··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
A plug and play user management system based on OpenFGA that allows you to manage user permissions and roles locally.

I built it to help save time for folks building internal enterprise apps

sailorganymede··on Writing toy software is a joy
Nope, I do this too (most of the time.) I don’t like working on code I don’t understand. I have started to ask it to use a client API I’ve written to figure out how clients would work with the stuff I write though. It’s great.
sailorganymede··on How to post when no one is reading
I love this. I don’t write but I think this advice applies to anything creative. Can’t get better if you don’t do it!
sailorganymede··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
I’ve done this! I wound up writing a small 500 sub LOC solution (very bare bones) that I copy/paste when I work in places where I don’t get to use my fav note taking software.

That said, I just converged on Apple Notes in the end.

sailorganymede··on If nothing is curated, how do we find things
There are plenty of internet radios like NTS which are all about curated discovery. It's worth checking out if that's your thing!
sailorganymede··on Show HN: My high school team’s space probe
From the UK too. Seeing those docs gave me a total whiplash! I remember the amount of paperwork we had to do for these kind of projects. Funny how nothing has changed.
sailorganymede··on Ask HN: What country would you like to relocate to and why?
Anywhere but the UK. It’s miserable here.
sailorganymede··on Why blog if nobody reads it?
I blog about things I mess up on but learned something about. That way, I feel less bad messing up and if someone else has the same idea, they can learn too
sailorganymede··on I send myself automated emails to practice Dutch
I have built something similar except with a list of warm up exercises and with GitHub Actions.

I suppose a bank of words on a .CSV, a script which selects words, and a job triggered via a ChronJob which opens an issue does the trick. I had it so when an issue is opened, I got emailed.

The pro of this approach is you don’t have to deploy any infra. The con is that your emails never look as nice as you got it :’)

sailorganymede··on Ask HN: What skills do you want to develop or improve in 2025?
Releasing stuff.
sailorganymede··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
I invest in my soft skills. I’ve become pretty good at handling my business stakeholders now and while I do still code, I’m also keeping business in the loop and helping them to be involved.
sailorganymede··on Advent of Code 2024
AoC would be more stressful if you had to solve a problem in 30 minutes for a highly competitive job.
sailorganymede··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
AI tools for schools. Currently building the first tool out which is to do with languages. It's been a wild journey so far, but pushing
sailorganymede··on Serialization Is the Secret
I really enjoyed reading this because it explained the topic quite simply. It was well written !
sailorganymede··on Innovation heroes are a sign of a dysfunctional organization
Strange… The finance company I work at also does this. And it’s so strange. I feel like they value Jira tickets more than actual work being done. It’s even funnier cause we get asked to close work when we want to go into prod and told to create new tickets to put our work in to prod. which kind of is annoying.
sailorganymede··on Ask HN: Well architected React and Node repos?
The React docs give some nice ideas. I organise with features and it honestly works so well for my needs but experimentation is so key with figuring out.
sailorganymede··on Ask HN: How do I balance all my 200 interests in life?
I found one of the weird positives of going through a life changing crisis was during that period, what interests I did have at the time really were what I wanted to do. I kept just those interests up and it really helped give me some direction. But YMMV on that one.
sailorganymede··on Show HN: I made a state machine framework for guided conversations with LLMs
I’m actually currently doing research into this to see how far LLMs can model state machines so this is totally up my alley! Thank you for sharing.
sailorganymede··on Discussion: Job seekers can't find a job and Employers can't find an employees
I always understood it was to filter out dudes who’d succeed at it: people who have a lot of spare time who would use that spare time to grind really hard for some arbitrary coding test. As an employer, I’d look at that dude and think: this dude could defo do overtime and he likes coding! We’ll take him. But that’s my two cents.
sailorganymede··on Ask HN: What was an interesting project you started and finished over a weekend?
When I was looking for a new tech job, I got sick of trying to figure out which Leetcode Pattern I was gonna practice so I just threw all of them on a list and gave me one a day.

The reason it only gives you one random thing a day is cause I didn’t wanna try “re-roll” the pattern I was gonna practice to give me something easier.

sailorganymede··on Ask HN: What is the most useless project you have worked on?
My last job had me updating a legacy service in a totally different language to what i was hired for a technology that was gonna get replaced in one month - hence rendering one months effort as useless.
sailorganymede··on ADHD Productivity Fundamentals
I schedule things. I put nice long stretches of time (we are talking about 4-6 hours about) and it’s pretty much ONLY time I ever get anything done. I need long periods of time cause the start is all about building focus but not forcing it so YMMV. I think experimentation is super helpful.
sailorganymede··on Show HN: AI Generated (Not-Real) User Avatar Images for Development Needs
Honestly, when it comes Avatars for my development needs, I just use Emojis. It’s just really easy to set up compared to getting anything more complicated.
sailorganymede··on Becoming a dungeon master for an interview
Methinks it’s a good enough method to somehow get good enough candidates. Hiring is hard because it’s a negotiation: sellers always upsell their skills and buyers gotta figure it out. Negotiation is skill that not everyone has so at least by having some sort of standard test like the current leetcode system, you can guarantee the dudes coming in know the difference between a Stack and Queue
sailorganymede··on Becoming a dungeon master for an interview
Pretty much this. Companies needed software engineers, looked at what Google was doing, and copied. And they call themselves innovative for doing it.
sailorganymede··on Ask HN: Learn React or Vue?
I chose React because it really made life much easier when it came to reusing components and organising my projects. I find bare bones React the right level of complexity for me and I can get a lot done with it
sailorganymede··on Math Team
I think the problem the author is referring to is it stopped being about Math and much more about impressing random strangers for the chance to gain an opportunity.

My experience is similar to you - I too really enjoyed my time doing these activities but once everything I ever enjoyed started becoming brownie points for my college applications, the competition started becoming "Grind X tasks and Y patterns so you can make the grade! Cause if you don't solve this in 14 minutes, then that kid will and he'll get your position!"

sailorganymede··on Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use?
https://www.breadcrumb.live/ - i use it as a visual diary of sorts throughout my day
sailorganymede··on Ask HN: What side projects landed you a job?
I got the opposite: I was really curious about some security stuff so I wrote a chat system over Tor (which was actually quite difficult!) and used that project as my main showcase when I was in college. Anyways, I didn’t get a single job when that was linked on my resume. I did have one interview where I brought it up and I got dropped after that point. When I took it off, I actually got interviews and eventually hired. I always assumed it was cause Tor has a bit of a reputation I guess.
