sagivo··on Bank transfers as a payment method
> ACH payments are generally free to end users in the U.S., though a few banks will attempt to monetize them. (Looking at you, Bank of America.)

Stripe also charges for ACH. ACH payments on Stripe cost 0.80%, capped at $5. [1]

sagivo··on Show HN: Pop.com – pair programming with low-latency, Screenhero-style sharing
> I named it “Screen” as homage to Screenhero, only to realize that such a generic word makes a terrible brand name, and consequently makes it impossible to find via search engines.

So you've changed it to "pop"? I don't think you're going to get any better here..

Btw I'm an old fan of screenhero.

sagivo··on Ask HN: I joined a FAANG and it is awful
I've been in two FAANG companies and I can tell you know - go back to startups. I came from startups and couldn't wrap my head around how slow things are. In FAANG everything is promotion driven so people spend most of their energy reverse engineering the system and choosing work that will help them get promoted. It's a never ending, beautifully designed rat race. You will spend weeks on performance reviews, evaluations and other HR corporate mambo jumbo. If you spend more than 50% of your time on actual work you are lucky.

If you have a startup mindset you should go back to startups. You will be more productive, happy and grow faster.

sagivo··on Programmers, teach non-geeks the true cost of interruptions (2014)
This also applies to remote interruptions like slack and email messages. The difference is you can control these interactions better by hitting the "do not disturb" mode. Just make sure people understand why you're not responding right away.
sagivo··on Over the next year or so, Google will try out new office designs
If top tech companies want to keep attracting top talent, they will have to let people choose where they want to work from. That means being open to remote. Instead of forcing hybrid models - invest in tools and processes that make working from everywhere more productive.
sagivo··on Google to stop selling ads based on your specific web browsing
It's a good time to pivot. Google is one ad-block away from loosing 70% of their revenue [1]. They should adopt the model that DuckDuckGo uses [2] and offer ads based on search query vs user data tracking.

sagivo··on LastPass Android app has got 7 trackers in it
I also moved to Bitwarden as a result of the new policy. The UI is equily bad but I feel more secure using an open source tool that will not change their policy whenever their execs want more $$$
sagivo··on Signal Desktop is corrupting its database
I may be wrong, but comments are meant for that. Ideally when there's a disagreement, people can openly discuss it. I thought downvoting is to flag unproductive comments.
sagivo··on Signal Desktop is corrupting its database
I feel like Signal missed the opportunity they had after the WhatsApp fiasco. Every person I've tried to convert to Signal opt out after a day or two due to lack of usability. Most of them either went back to WhatsApp or moved to Telegram. While the tech is great and the privacy is good, if they won't invest in usability and UI they will not win the masses.

EDIT - if you downvote, please explain why. If you disagree it's not a reason to downvote.

sagivo··on Signal Is Back
It's a non profit. Donations are their main (only?) source right now.
sagivo··on Show HN: Lex Fridman AI Podcast Search
Looks like you've reached your sharing limit. Not working
sagivo··on Smart contracts on Bitcoin
> Blockstack enables users to use arbitrary storage backends like Dropbox, Amazon, Google as “dumb drives”. Only pointers to the storage backends are stored with Blockstack and encrypted/signed data is kept at storage providers.

I stopped reading after that.

sagivo··on Smart contracts on Bitcoin
Why not using this VC money to support Ethereum? They already do that and much more.
sagivo··on Facebook to staff: Avoid company-branded clothing for own safety
I am an x-Facebook employee. In the early days I used to be proud wearing Facebook swag. Later it bacame more and more an issue. People started making comments on feature X or policy Y they didn't like. I eventually didn't wear any swag in public, this is when I've realized I need to leave the company.

Facebook is still a great place to work but the brand is so damaged that it's hard to see how they gain consumer trust again. As a consumer company it means any new product (libra, unified family of apps etc..) will fail because of that.

sagivo··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
How is it compared to telegram?
sagivo··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2020?

sagivo··on SaaS We Happily Pay For
How much time will you spend writing custom solutions? Why would you focus on anything other than your core businesses? Why would you want to maintain servers and OSS that has nothing to do with your core businesses? I don't think doing everything yourself just to save $200/month always pays off.
sagivo··on Robinhood Desktop – Open Source
It supports any stock you have on Robinhood so once you have crypto on Robinhood it will show it too.
sagivo··on Robinhood Desktop – Open Source
Author here, I wrote Robinhood for desktop out of the necessity of staying up to date with my Robinhood investments.

It's open source - https://github.com/sagivo/StockStalk

Like you, I spend most of my day in front of a computer and I need a quick way to see how my Robinhood portfolio is doing.

StockStalk will show you your status on the mac bar (green/red) and click on the tray will show you how each stock is doing. I also plan to allow buy and sell directly within the app. This way there is no need to check your phone all the time and get notified via desktop notifications on sharp changes. At the moment I have a mac and windows versions but linux is coming soon.

Important to notice that no sensitive information is sent to anywhere. the credentials are all stored locally and sync directly with Robinhood API.

Take a look and tell me what you think. Hope you'll find it useful as it's for me.

sagivo··on Robinhood Desktop – Open Source
Right now it has real-time tickers. For charts to work I need to find a good reliable real-time historic data as Robinhood does not provide history as part of their API, still looking on it.
sagivo··on Coinbase Index Fund
I don't see the value here. I can simply buy it on Gdax weighted by market capitalization and save the 2% annual management fees.
sagivo··on Show HN: Robinhood on Desktop
It's almost ready, all left is to compile electron for Linux and test it so I assume very soon. Of course you can just fork the code and do it yourself :)

sagivo··on Dropbox Files Confidentially for U.S. IPO
nothing to do with open-minded. simply checking advantages vs alternatives.
sagivo··on Dropbox Files Confidentially for U.S. IPO
i probably gonna get downvoted but i don't get their product. anything they offer you can find better/cheaper elsewhere (google docs, photos etc) or not really needed (paper)
