sagaro··on India's Forgotten Mansions
A few days back there was a HN submission on everything moving towards the average. Buildings looking the same. Skylines in many cities looking similar. The cars looking similar. There are also these meme posts on twitter "why we don't build such houses/buildings today" with some photo of a 13th century castle or cathedral.

It all boils down to economics. Average is cost efficient. Standardize the raw materials. Optimize the raw material for easy storage, handling and transporting. When made this way, it is also easier to maintain, find parts (door handles, replacement faucet, switch boards etc.)

The chettinad houses are super customized. The pillars are from Burma (Myanmar) teak wood seasoned for months in sea water, the walls are polished with egg white (no paint), the tile work and the intricate carvings on the doors and pillars are all a pain when it comes to economics.

It is not just the cost to maintain them. The people with knowhow on how to maintain these are long gone. The new generation engineers only know how to build things the standard/average way with the standard materials.

sagaro··on Ask HN: What simple facts have you learned surprisingly late in life?
This property is really helpful in making eggs using microwave. Take a mug of water, add salt, crack an egg and pour it in. Stick this in the microwave, the egg gets boiled perfectly, because the salt slows down the boiling point.
sagaro··on Macroeconomic changes have made it impossible for me to want to pay you
>Would they get it if the other top engineers and I all downed tools or walked out as a group?

They tried this at twitter. But twitter survived. Turned out for KTLO not many people are actually required.

Also, when you are over staffed, employees have enough free time to get political, run slack channels, do activism and in general reduce the entire org's productivity. Most companies were stuck in this phase the last few years, with Coinbase and a couple of other companies being brave enough to say they don't want their employees engaging in workplace activism.

This whole macro-economic change and the twitter success after getting rid of 30% of its employees, has now given these companies an opportunity to follow without getting singled out. If they don't do it now, and do it 6 months later they will get called out as demons. Now since everyone is doing it, it is not that bad a PR hit.

sagaro··on Show HN: Open-source alternative to Retool
I have been using budibase for pretty much all my internal tooling at an Ecom startup. it is pretty good for pretty much most usecases.
sagaro··on Just don’t
The issue with that line of thought, where people are justified to take offense to anything and then you ought to watch your language to not offend them to make things productive, is there is no limit to what people can take offense to.

A few days back I saw how using the thumbs up emoji offends people. Eventually, we will all be discussing at the least common denominator, the lowest quality of talk, because everything will offend everyone.

Point is to educate people that it is stupid to take offense to such things, because there are better things to do in life than be offended because someone said some word.

sagaro··on Just don’t
Seems like a recipe for creating snowflakes. People should just grow a thicker skin and move on with their lives instead of taking offense and getting depressed that someone told them "just"
sagaro··on I tried starting a manufacturing unit in India (2020)
Reading this, it doesn't seem like starting a manufacturing unit in India is difficult. But starting a manufacturing unit in an AGRICULTURE land meant for farming is difficult.

The difficulty is not the manufacturing plant. It is the conversion of agriculture land to non agriculture land.

I find the title and the conclusion by the author very misleading.

sagaro··on Ask HN: Has anyone managed to find enjoyment in their work after burnout?
I worked at a startup for many years. I used to work even during weekends and hardly had any work life balance. The work was very interesting and there was so much to do and so much to learn and grow. I was also rewarded for my contributions. But by 202, I felt burnt out. For the last five years I had hardly any social life and all I did was just think about work. I decided to take a break. Quit the startup in good terms. Got a small piece of farmland and did farming for 1.5 years. Relaxed a lot. Enjoyed my life. Got the farm to a level where I am no longer required to work there everyday. Have a couple of farm hands who take care of it. have automated most things and have an app that tells me the situation at the farm. have gotten contracts to sell the produce.

Now I am back at the same startup in the same role after a 1.5 year break. I always enjoyed the work, just was burnt out. And this farm project helped take my mind of that work.

sagaro··on No More “Insight Porn”
Pretty much all of Linkedin is insights porn and self patting.
sagaro··on Scratch is a big deal
this is pretty amazing
sagaro··on Netflix lays off 300 more people – almost 3% of its staff
With streaming services so fragmented now, and everyone producing their own shows which is available only in thier platform, piracy/torrents will soon become a more convenient way of consuming content. The CX of steaming is reducing with fragmentation.
sagaro··on Ask HN: Does anybody still use bookmarking services?
when I am researching on something, I usually just dump links with a line describing them on obsidian.md so I can go back to it when I need to. Bookmarks never worked for me.
sagaro··on Singapore Government Tech Stack
Gerrymandering is a popular tactics used by PAP in Singapore, to ensure they stay in power. In most democracies the Govt., Supreme Court and the Election Commission are independent of each other. Thereby elections are run fairly. But in Singapore, the election commission and supreme court is run by the govt. in power. This makes it easier for the party in power to sustain it's reign.

I don't understand 5he example on the homepage. How does the extension know what is "buy it again"?
sagaro··on Urea prices increase 270% in 1 year
The same website has the price for Natural gas for 30 years. https://www.indexmundi.com/commodities/?commodity=natural-ga...

Natural gas prices were a lot higher multiple times in the past, with no corresponding peaks in Urea prices. Just wondering if Natrual gas is the sole reason or if something else also is at play.

sagaro··on Tinyprinter.club
Still need to remember URLs and then visit them on regular basis. It it not a push system, more a pull system. Communities die that way, at least at initial stages.
sagaro··on Tinyprinter.club
I actually don't favor "per tool" or "per project". Just making an observation on why project owners are gravitating towards discord for their community. It is easier to setup than to setup a forum or something.

The issue with per project forum (instead of a discord type one login for all forums), is that it creates friction. For instance I have visited obsidian.md's forums a lot for things I need. Sometimes I have noticed someone asking something for which I know the answer, but then the pain of having to create an account and then answer that person, makes me just skip it.

The reason for discord communities to be active, is purely because there is no friction.

sagaro··on Tinyprinter.club
Most of these just require forum and not a chat community channel like Discord, where everyone keeps asking the same question, because things are not easy to search or organize.

But the reason people aren't making forums, is it is not as easy for community owner to make forums (need to get cloud storage, then configure something like discourse forum, get a domain name etc.)

Same for the end user who wants to be part of multiple communities, has to remember the URLs of multiple communities, has to have multiple logins and passwords and needs to create an account in each of them.

If someone combines discord + discourse (basically an app, that has all your forums on the side bar with just one login, and people can create a new forum for anything, similar to how you can create a discord server) then I think we might end up going back to forums with more meaningful discussions and all information related to some issue in one place.

sagaro··on Avoid News by Rolf Dobelli (2010)[pdf]
I stopped consuming news a long time back. What really affects my day to day life are ultra local news (new schemes by government, crime near my place, changes to services (such as hike in transport/utilities, new startups near my locality etc.). In countries like Singapore, because the news papers/media fail to bring these important issues which affect people's lives directly, they have the community centers (CC) and each building having a CC board, which dispatch such important news.
