Are you familiar with mint.com?
sadga··on Craigslist Suing Padmapper
It worked for AirBnB.

Hotel safes are there to secure insurance protection for your belongings.
sadga··on How about an Olympic games for enhanced athletes?
Paralympics basically are this, but you have to take one step back before you take two steps forward with enhancements:

sadga··on Ubuntu is coming back to Dell Laptops
Sandy Bridge had the same sort of problem. It took a year to get Linux graphics working properly.

Mouseover on an entry should make the grey foreground darker, instead of making the white background darker.

If you are going for scannability, repeating "Sign up to see if you have any mutual friends on Facebook" in bold blue on every entry is hurting you much worse.

sadga··on DIY B&B
The startup opportunity here is to streamline the process of registering a legal and proper B&B.

AirBnB should be doing this already to clear the cloud around their business, but doing so would be an admission that their current practices are abetting illegal activity.

sadga··on ICFP Contest 2012
Weird to see the cost excuse in there, since the cost of judging 100 teams on 100 maps for 3 minutes each on 1Ghz 1GB-RAm machines is 30,000 minutes = 500hrs < $50 on EC2 small machines
sadga··on Researcher seeks solution to mystery of 20-year-old self-deleting poem
Is the program actually encrypted, or just compiled? I assume it's just compiled.
sadga··on Today, a homeless looking man handed me $50 and this note
That article says the fake reviews are for Mechanical Turk -- it's unclear if they were reviews that were actually approved by a scammer, or if the researcher's just said "write me a fake review". There's a huge chance that their synthetic fake reviews don't resemble real deceptive reviews.

Also, the "real" reviews were just pulled from a site, without any research to verify their authenticity.

sadga··on Paid Vacation? That’s Not Cool. You Know What’s Cool? Paid, Paid Vacation.
That's completely reversed from most of the US.

Vacation is usually paid out, sick time expires. Also, many employers require vacation be scheduled in advance, while sick can be on-demand.

sadga··on Skrollr - parallax scrolling for the masses
The same ones that put contact information in an image so you can't select and copy it, and hide that image behind a transparent div, so you can't even download it. Ugh.
sadga··on The TSA's Dumb Air-Security Rules Are Not Based on Science
That article is interesting, but extremely violates Wikipedia's editorial policy. The wording is inflammatory and opinionated, not encycopedic:

"The bottom line was “The “old-days” of locating the point of origin of a post-flashover fire by relying on the “lowest burn and deepest char” are OVER![12]

When word of the ATF experiments reached the fire investigation community, people began to examine the data more closely, because an error rate over 90% was simply unimaginable! In fact, the poor results should have surprised nobody. "

sadga··on Ask HN: Why is Apple ripping of European users? 1€ ≠ 1$
The MacBook was built in a sweatshop in China -- unless your nation has import tariffs, European regulations won't help that. But the price of a MacBook is still higher than in the US.
sadga··on Sweden Twitter Experiment Goes Painfully Awry
> I am tempted to believe this article is a troll.

sadga··on MacBook Pro Retina Display Analysis
The power issue is hugely significant. Using a GPU kills battery life, which is why laptops now have two GPUs -- a low-power basic GPU and a switchable high-power GPU
sadga··on Why Smart People Are Stupid
If he had his wits about him, he would have titled it "What Intelligence Tests Skip".
