saddestcatever··on Use of Ad-Blocking Software Rises by 30% Worldwide
Holy crap. Assuming no other change in behaviour - I wonder what they're yearly value is to ad networks? Maybe a couple dollars in comparison?
saddestcatever··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
That's the idea - but most cafes (at least in Boston) can't handle that sort of volume - you're going to get stink eyes if you settle in for more than an hour or two. Wish it was more welcomed (as I've seen more common in Europe / small towns) to be welcome as long as they have seats.
saddestcatever··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
Love it! (Little pricey in my opinion), but I can't tell you how often I've walked in and out of coffee shops just hoping to find an available seat - somewhere around other humans.
saddestcatever··on Please, Fix This Shitty Website
What happens after I nominate a website? I'm not sure what the follow-up is. Does it go on a list? Generate a leaderboard? Send leads to this Matthias guy?
saddestcatever··on Show HN: An app for your older relatives, helping them find the right cables
Also, if my laptop doesn't have HDMI or VGA, I can't connect it to my TV. Don't some ultrabooks only have Display Port out?
saddestcatever··on Show HN: An app for your older relatives, helping them find the right cables
Can confirm. Dongle Daddy can't currently help me power my Nexus 5x.
saddestcatever··on Ask HN: Burned out, depressed, cannot do anything
Make sure to work less, BEFORE getting a dog. Gotta make sure you can take care of yourself and your family before taking on the care of another living being.

Alternatively - Find friend's/neighbor's dogs that you can walk / help take care of.

saddestcatever··on Ask HN: Burned out, depressed, cannot do anything
Anyone else tried vitamin D supplements? I've heard of people taking vitamin D when they're not getting enough natural light (basements, winter months, etc)
saddestcatever··on Flat Pack Chainless Bicycle from IKEA
That's pretty funny. The entire bike was gone in a few days once the water bottle and seat went MIA.
saddestcatever··on Pandora is laying off 7% of its US workforce
Funny enough, can't you go into settings and change your gender? Pretty sure that would dump you into a new bucket of marketing.

Though yeah, that's an offensive ad to have to encounter.

saddestcatever··on 5 Reasons Why I Switched from Mint to a Spreadsheet
How are you populating your spreadsheet? Importing a .csv from each of your bank accounts? Let's say I have 3 different accounts, logging in and getting updated transactions is now a 15 minute process.

Mint absolutely blows (slow, barely works, poor categorization, poor projections), but I haven't found an easier way to view multiple accounts in one place.

saddestcatever··on GitHub Pages – Usage Limits
Thank you. Seriously. GitHub Pages is a great service. It's saved me in a whole number of smaller projects. The Usage Limits are surprisingly liberal considering it's a complimentary service! So, thank you and your team!

saddestcatever··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016?
Being married is not exactly a passive activity :P
saddestcatever··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016?
Is there more data that I'm not seeing? I just see high & low. This information is available on literally every travel guide.

Also, "Bangkok Thailand" asks me to pick a town/city.

What is the question the user actually wants to know? Should I pack a raincoat? Should I pack a dress coat for nights? Do I need an umbrella, or just a coat with a hood, etc...

saddestcatever··on My fight against CDN libraries
I'm curious - do you know of any chrome plugins / client-side tools to help solve this problem? Seems like it could be very infuriating for the semi-competent Chinese internet user. Wouldn't be too bad to write a plugin that finds dependencies from "allowed"/"works-in-China" CDNs.
saddestcatever··on Signs that a startup is focused on stuff that doesn’t matter
Thanks for these. Way more direct than the article.
saddestcatever··on The real Soylent sickness
I'm pretty sure there's a film about this...
saddestcatever··on The real Soylent sickness
I agree. I'll never understand how people get so defensive in regards to SOMEONE ELSE's decision to change their diet. Soylent is a great solution for some. It's not for everyone (nothing is, not even food :P) - and I'm glad it works.
saddestcatever··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
Good note. Funny how many users are mentioning price as their main reason for dismissing the Pixel
saddestcatever··on Leaflet 1.0 – A JavaScript library for mobile-friendly interactive maps
Agreed. Fantastic tool. I've used it for everything including live maps, data visualization, and even as a layer for handing image zooming :P
saddestcatever··on The man behind the million dollar homepage 11 years later
There needs to be a shock value. And associated number. Imagine of: "Best 15 cents I've ever spent. So, anyone want to chat?" showed how many views/impressions/clicks. You're following the classic "Chalkboard in a Bar" where you can leave a message for a dollar -> users will do that, since they can see the 50 people that they are paying to reach.
saddestcatever··on This software startup can tell your boss if you’re looking for a job
Funny enough - it's all too common for a company to poach employees directly from another job. It's an odd double standard (though understandable) that an employee could get backlash for looking, but recruiters actively try and poach.
saddestcatever··on Pokémon Go Is Coming to Apple Watch
"... activity goals set by the player. During a walk, it registers the distance and calories burned." Interesting - are they transitioning Pokemon GO to a peripheral activity? No longer the primary focus, but simply a side minigame to otherwise analog activities.

Also, the $35 peripheral seems to be too little too late. I can only imagine the piles of money they could have made if the hardware could have been available when EVERYONE was playing playing Pokemon GO.

saddestcatever··on Ryver: Why we run negative ads against Slack
Interesting choice in stock photos. I'd almost prefer no photos at all (text only post) as opposed to a bunch of tangentially related generic stock photos that pull attention away from the relevant content (text)
saddestcatever··on VR on steam grew 0.06% in july and 0.02% in august
How fast is VR changing? I keep hearing about new hardware / manufacturers / versions - so even though I want to pickup a headset, I'm planning to wait until the market and options settle down and a clear winner stands out.
saddestcatever··on 1Password – Standalone licenses vs. new subscription service
Hey Eva, can you pass some notes onto the team for me?

- OSX Desktop app is great. The "[+]" button to add new logins is in an odd location, but no big deal.

- The Android app needs a "Most Recent" view. I end up searching for the same logins, until I remember they can be favorited.

- When I re-install the Android App, it always prompts me to buy the PRO version. Takes a bit to resolve that it's already been purchased.

- Windows app is bad. Really bad. Recommended 1Password to a few friends, and had to later apologize when I realized they weren't in the Mac ecosystem. Slow, janky. Has a bad habit of locking up chrome when I first open the plugin.

- Lastly - yet another subscription service? I want you to be successful, but I likely won't be recommending 1Password anymore, or dropping if the standalone license gets feature locked.

saddestcatever··on 1Password – Standalone licenses vs. new subscription service
Seriously. I get that's it's good for business - but it's like mobile apps. I only have the capacity for a few, and all others are past saturation point.
saddestcatever··on Dollar Shave Club and the Disruption of Everything
True. I guess the article wanted to name-drop "AWS". Say congrats to the team next time you see your friend!
saddestcatever··on Ask HN: Are the Pokemon Go articles real, or is their PR firm amazing?
"Moms Against Pokemon Go"

There's now a hilarious contradiction, where parents are telling children to NOT go outside and run around.
