1) Right. And the holocaust was perpetrated by germans who were elected by citizens in a fair and open democracy.

The extermination of the native americans were perpetrated by americans who were elected by citizens in a fair and open democracy.

You seems to have a naive understanding of democracy. People always forget that the nazis won elections. People forget that the greatest evils ( genocide, atomic bombings, etc ) were all perpetrated by democracies.

There is a reason why democracy is called tyranny of the mob.

2) Just because you say they are "transparent, progressive and highly respected around the world" is meaningless. There is nothing inherently good about being "progressive". Once again that is a naive understanding of progessiveness. There was a time when nazis, communists, etc were viewed as progressives. But most importantly, just because they are "competent" today doesn't mean they are eternally competent. You do realize governments, judiciaries, etc can change right?

3) That's because they are filthy rich due centuries of european colonization.

4) Are they?

> But besides those things, you're right. It's just like the situation in Saudi Arabia, China and Russia. /s

It is just like that. Do you know how I know? Saudi, chinese, russians, etc all "self-congratulatory" excuses for why they need censorship. Just like you did.

To you, denmark may be heaven on earth, but to me denmark is nothing but a nazi collabotor who got off easy after ww2. Also, if denmark is so saintly why are the inuits in greenland ( the land you stole from them ) doing so horribly?

sacrificedcapon··on What Is a Nation? (2015)
By nations, I'm guessing you mean "nation-state".

Some elites ( globalists ) want to destroy nations today for the same reason elites in the past destroyed tribes to form nations. They create a bigger "slave and land base" on which to enrich themselves.

Think about what nations limit. It sections off resources (human, mineral, energy, etc) from the elites who want access to them. Under globalism, nation-states would exist in name only as they are superceded by a globalist political structure. Then these elites would have access to and control over all the world's human and natural resources.

Under a global political structure, an "american" CEO doesn't need to negotiate with Chinese government to gain access to and exploit its resources. And a "chinese" CEO wouldn't need to negotiate with an american government to gain access to and exploit its resources. Under globalism, the entire world and its people are freely available to the elites to exploit.

In a perverse way, globalism is communism for the elites. Whilest communists wanted to destroy nations to unite the workers, globalists want to destroy the nations to unite the elites. To a communist, a factory worker in china or germany or brazil has more commonality with each other than a chinese factory worker does to a chinese factory owner. To a globalist, an elite in china or germany or brazil has more commonality with each other than they do to their national commoners.

Of course some of the elites stand lose a lot while others will gain under globalism. That's why we are having a nationalist vs globalist struggle right now.

sacrificedcapon··on Plants “panic” when it rains
Perhaps that's why "panic" is in quotes.

Also keep in mind some believe that a lot of "animalyness" is also "plantyness".

sacrificedcapon··on Twitter to ban political advertising
You do realize that saudi arabia, china, russia, etc all have laws in place to hold newspaper editors responsible for printing "truth" right?

> This is what has kept our society well informed and critical thinking for a hundred years.

What makes you think you are a well-informed and critical thinking society? Don't most danes think alike just like most saudis, chinese, russians, etc. Don't most danes think and believe whatever news/propaganda tell them to believe just like saudis, chinese, russians, etc?

> This died with Facebook, YouTube and the non-editorial entertainment “news” and as a result we have anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers and what not.

And? Did the world end?

Do you realize that there was a time when it was "truth" that the earth was flat? Do you realize that there was a time when "pro-vaxxers" were ridiculed as much as anti-vaxxers are ridiculed now? If people like you were in power, we'd never have any progress.

I'm not an anti-vaxxer or a flat-earther. The easiest way to discredit them is with speech. More speech, not less. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. And free speech is the best antidote to falsehoods.

sacrificedcapon··on The Vexed Meaning of Equality in Gilded Age America
Neither party is for stronger US labor unions. Both parties are pro-globalism and pro-free trade.

It was under a democratic president that China attained Most Favored Trading Nation status. It was Clinton, in the 90s, who did most of the legwork to get China into the WTO - though they officially entered under Bush's term in 2001.

sacrificedcapon··on Gitlab cancels plan on tracking user behavior on GitLab.com
Is it possible to enforce american spelling ( especially in the title )? Behavior vs Behaviour?

HN is an american company and gitlab is an american company so people who participate here should use correct american spelling.

The gitlab post itself uses the correct spelling - behavior.

"In an effort to improve our user experience, we decided to implement user behavior tracking with both first and third-party technology"

sacrificedcapon··on WhatsApp sues NSO Group for allegedly helping spies hack phones around the world
Your "morals" precludes anyone from working at any major company. Let alone companies like WashingtonPost who helped start many illegal wars and led to the death of millions of innocent people with their lies.

Using your logic, the murdered journalist took blood money.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/opinions/2003/02/06/i...

If you work for pretty much any major company in the world, you are receiving "blood money". If you are working for the US government or any major government, you are receiving "blood money".

Can you point me to a company that is "without sin"?

sacrificedcapon··on Inherited Learning? It Happens, but How Is Uncertain
That's the inheritance of instinct rather than the inheritance of learning. If one generation of wasp colony "learned" that building their structures under blue canopy was good (researchers protected these structures) and red canopy was bad (researchers destroy these structures each time wasps make them ) and you take the offspring of this colony and raise them in isolation and they still build under blue canopy and avoid the red canopy, then you can perhaps say "learning" was inherited.

It's like how infants inherit the instinct to cry and suckle. Inheritance of learning would be if the mother (since childhood ) was taught to wink and she'd get more attention and food/milk and her infant winked at her instead of crying when the infant wanted attention.

sacrificedcapon··on Unix: A History and a Memoir, by Brian Kernighan
In our industry's defense, our industry is relatively young. In other words, the industry is too busy making history to appreciate it. I'm sure as time passes, we'll start to appreciate the history of the industry more and more.
sacrificedcapon··on Twitter “Silenced” Dissenting Voices During Protests in Egypt: Research
It isn't just social media. Google's censorship of their search results predates censorship on social media by a few years. It feels like a century ago, but traditional media and the elites attacked Google until Google gave in on censoring google news and google search.

Also, I think we distract ourselves when we blame "advertisers" for censorship. After all the top advertisers in the US are also the major media players - Comcast, AT&T, P&G, Disney, Charter, Verizon.

https://www.adbrands.net/us/top-us-advertisers.htm

So these media companies use their massive platforms to manipulate and control the public, they also use their advertising money to manipulate and control ( indirectly and directly ).

It isn't "advertisers", it is major mass media companies trying to control and influence new media. As has always happened, whether it is cable, radio, telegraph, etc.

sacrificedcapon··on Gmail marking email from me as spam
Did you try changing your name to Netflix, Etrade or American Express? I swear, no matter how many times you mark their emails as spam, they eventually wind up back in your inbox ( admittedly in the Promotions section rather than the Primary inbox ).
sacrificedcapon··on BBC News launches 'dark web' Tor mirror
Agreed that the number of extremist leftists are small in the US. Unfortunately, many of those "Tumblr-like social justice warriors" work in the academia, media and government and wield disproportionate power. And if you haven't heard of any talk of revolution, you must have lived in seclusion somewhere in the woods and missed out on 3 years of post-Trump hysteria. Lucky you.
sacrificedcapon··on We Never Paid for Journalism
All you have to do is read the history of newspapers and journalism. Almost exclusively, they were created by financial, industrial and political elite to influence the population. They were never created to make money.

Alexander Hamilton didn't create the New York Post to make money. Henry Jarvis Raymond (politician) and George Jones (banker) didn't create the NYTimes to make money. Stilson Hutchins (politician) didn't create the WashingtonPost to make money. These newspapers were created to further their founders' political interests.

And in case you were wondering, Bezos didn't buy WashingtonPost to make money either.

sacrificedcapon··on We Never Paid for Journalism
I hate to burst your bubble, but fundamentally, all advertising is a "scam". It's to get you to buy stuff you really don't need.

Also, the print newspaper industry isn't as clean as you think.

http://paulgraham.com/submarine.html

You shouldn't be trusting any ad, wherever it is. Actually, the most reputable the platform, the more skeptical you should be since you are more trusting of the platform to begin with. The easier you are to be duped.

sacrificedcapon··on BBC News launches 'dark web' Tor mirror
I think you missed his point. Neither china nor russia censor "politically correct" speech. Of course their view of "politically correct" is different from ours and others. Europe, Islamic world, Africa, etc all protect "politically correct" speech and censor "politically incorrect" speech.

Sadly, in the US, extremists ( particularly the left ) are leading the charge to censor "politically incorrect" speech.

sacrificedcapon··on Ask HN: Are there books for mathematics like Feynman's lectures on physics?
Not as encompassing as Feynman's lectures on physics, but Euclid's Elements is an excellent mathematical text.
