saber_taylor··on How to Get a Job at Google
P&G uses an iq-like test from what I've read. The NFL uses the Wonderlic iq test.
saber_taylor··on With 230M active users, Talking Tom Cat apps are bigger than Twitter
My take on these numbers is producers versus consumers.

Tweets are production, however limited. Or for push/pull model, Talking Tom is all pull, Twitter has some push.

saber_taylor··on Software in 2014
HTTP is used since it won't be firewalled.
saber_taylor··on Is it bad practice to use your real name online?
I first tried using my real name back when blogging started (around the same time as Journaling file system buzz on Linux). It was difficult to switch gears from attention seeking.

I "lurk more" when using my real name since I try to use communities where other people are more insightful than me.

Also I noticed a common pattern of "20 questions" when I was using aliases about innocuous Questions Answered Frequently that over time eroded my confidence in my anonymity. e.g. vim versus emacs is one of the 20.

saber_taylor··on The psychiatric drug crisis
> We cannot really objectively measure or test pain.

Perhaps you meant in the brain.

saber_taylor··on Torsploit takedown: analysis, reverse engineering, forensic
I think in that sense, this is more of a social engineering hack. Everyone trusted a common host. You can say the trust was not manipulated into existence by an adversary, but trust was involved, in hindsight.
saber_taylor··on [dead]
I once read a similar thread but swinging the other way. It was how to get rid of mean people and written by the apparent administrator of the site. When I was in a trivial position of authority once I found that I could deal with troublemakers by making them uncertain. Unlike a court of law, uncertainty is available to this site. The whole thread back then was longer than a certain book while I won't bore you the title with. All I ask is to make of those who do not believe their own passions, necromantic dust. I am unvarying in the websites that I read each day and do not know of an alternative for Hacker News yet.
saber_taylor··on Feeling Sorry for Tsarnaev
I DNRTA, but I was listening to the radio and the lyrics sung were sung to the contrary but I wasn't sure which one I agree with: "By a lady in black / And I held my tongue / As she told me 'Son, / Fear is the heart of love'".

Not sure what to make of the number 72 being featured in the new Star Trek film though since I only read the plot on Wikipedia.

saber_taylor··on One hospital charges $8,000 — another, $38,000
Does this mean there should be an app so you can comparison shop while in an ambulance?

Hey no, I want to go to Hospital B.

saber_taylor··on Breaking News is broken
I saw a suggestion on Reddit where with each million users, the headlines get even more distorted, that there be a karma penalty for distorting the headline. I think that could work if it was on a per subreddit basis.
saber_taylor··on News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier
Me too. But it would be nice if news aggregator sites let you opt out of if it bleeds it leads (given the responses here, there's a market). It's certainly within the limits of the filters they use already for personalization bubbles.

I wrote a script for my local newspaper to spider links from their front page and display the city next to the "read more" links, so I knew if a catastrophe was local or national. If it's national then the wtf improbability goes down and it should be less interesting.

saber_taylor··on Want to Block Common Passwords? Sorry, That is Patented
You'd probably set a chron with crack or John the Ripper which would come with a small password list and do some common permutations and then lock accounts. Ars Technica mentioned a RockYou.com password list that is now the go to list for serious cracking. I think it would be hard to enforce this patent for sysadmins who implement their own system.
saber_taylor··on 'Everyone in US under virtual surveillance' - NSA whistleblower
The Defcon video is similar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqIz-RNUL1g (not sure if this link is bootleg) https://www.defcon.org/html/links/dc-archives/dc-20-archive.... (just the audio)

has the ACLU and the same guy if that makes it more legit.

The 10 zetabyte storage capacity estimate is based on building size. I think we need more details.

saber_taylor··on Colorado measure legalizing marijuana passes
I did a debate on this topic 17 years ago. There are historical parallels though I don't recall the location of smaller regions legalizing marijuana within a larger nation. It's not all sunshine and roses when that happens: trafficking went up and crime stayed about the same. (from memory.)
saber_taylor··on Facebook “Promoted Posts” have primarily foreign “Likes”: Why?
Without squinting too closely, I think it's this one. I get these on Livejournal and have seen them around the 'net. There's generic content that may apply to any possible post, and then the incentive is the PageRank that flows back from the username link. An improvement even would be to have a bot generate text based on the post, and then have paid humans deal with the captchas. </evilhat>
saber_taylor··on The Patent, Used as a Sword
The "patent troll" companies are not participating in MAD, since they have no products. However they want the min-max for squeezing the patent licensees versus nobody using the innovation. I think the patent troll companies are closer to the original envisioning of the patent system, more so than MAD patents.
