s_trumpet··on The missing semester of CS education
Honestly, this course would have been a game-changer for those of us who went to terrible colleges with minimal opportunities for internships. The disconnect between theoretical classes and practical ones was simply too vast to grasp for the majority.

You sound like one of the top tier of students, being a programmer before entering college (which I assume was a good one). There are colleges out there where the faculty have only a theoretical relation to any actual useful knowledge. E.g. my semester-long networking class actually had less content than just watching a few YouTube videos. My operating systems class had a prof who was so completely clueless about so many things I can't list them. On the first day of class, he said "There are 3 OS (sic) - Windows, Mac and Unix" and refused to believe a student who told him that OSX is a unix. My CS education is entirely self-taught as a result.

In a world where legendary producers like Madlib are creating sample-heavy, layered production on an iPad, who's really "creating" stuff?

Bandana is probably my fave of the year so far. Lots of great albums this year:

- JPEGMAFIA "All My Heroes Are Cornballs"

- IDK "Is He Real?"

- Earthgang "Mirrorland"

- Lewis Capaldi "Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent"

- slowthai "Nothing Great About Britain"

- Dave "PSYCHODRAMA"

- Benny the Butcher "The Plugs I Met"

- Cate le Bon "Reward"

- Denzel Curry "ZUU"

- Flume "Hi This Is Flume"

- Gesaffelstein "Hyperion"

- Kota the Friend "FOTO"

and there are several upcoming releases I'm quite hyped for.

I would be bankrupt if I bought all the albums I stream now.

Firefox's "Containers On The Go" addon lets you spin up disposable tab containers (see "Multi-Account Containers") with a single click. This works wonders for sites with limited free reads; it's increasingly the only way Medium is browsable for me.

The state-operated Indian Institutes of Technology are generally considered the best colleges in India. Top private colleges are just below that (BITS being top dog among these) and the state National Institutes of Technology are also quite good. After these, quality starts degrading quickly among both state and private colleges.

I went through a mediocre private college - I can safely say that besides two or three of my profs, most were absolutely useless and couldn't code their way out of a paper bag. The syllabus is also pretty crap - when it wasn't random electronics courses to pad the syllabus, it was the same course slightly tweaked and presented by a different prof. There was no mandatory course where a large-scale programming project was to be made. Version control, shell usage, practical database usage, and many other basic things were not taught at all.

Nintendo is the publisher, yes. They also publish games from other developers (e.g. Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade Chronicles).

Their other tentpole franchises are mostly developed in-house (Zelda, Splatoon, Mario Kart), via subsidiaries (Retro Studios) 2nd-party developers (GameFreak - Pokemon, Intelligent Systems - Fire Emblem), or 3rd parties (Bandai Namco & Sora - Super Smash Bros).

s_trumpet··on How ‘Baldur’s Gate’ Saved the Computer RPG
Modern CRPG's are pretty great, I enjoyed all of the following:

- Divinity OS 1/2

- Underrail

- Age of Decadence

- Bastard Bonds

- Serpent in the Staglands

- Tyranny

- Torment: Tides of Numenera

However, I did not care for Pillars of Eternity at all.

s_trumpet··on How ‘Baldur’s Gate’ Saved the Computer RPG
I highly recommend Underrail - while the graphics are a bit simplistic (it was made entirely by a Ukrainian programmer/artist), it's the closest we've got to a modern Fallout 1/2.

I'm also looking forward to Obsidian's new game The Outer Worlds, seems like New Vegas IN SPACE.

> “Most of these people retired with a good pension,” said Jon White, who worked at Sears for 38 years, most recently as a manager in a store in Lithonia, Ga., before retiring in 2008. “Most of them are comfortable for the most part — cashiers, clerks, replenishers, all kinds of workers.”

As you said, the common Axe blink-call combo does not work on these bots; they dodge it immediately.

What was interesting to me was that since the bots trained against themselves, they discarded this combo as being ineffective - the result being that they did not use this combo even against vulnerable human players.

This is something that varies wildly with which part of the world you're in. For me, anything below 65F is "too cold" with 85 being a comfortable temperature.

Utter FUD. There are at least 3 major payment processors on the level of Stripe or Braintree. These have existed for the better part of a decade now.

India is a very domestic market - most tech products don't leave our shores at all.

s_trumpet··on The end of India’s ‘IT miracle’?
The problem is this: how do you entrust that the right people are getting into any institution (college, jobs, etc). There are two broad approaches: standardized testing vs. application/interviewing. The Western mindset predominantly favours approach #2 in most contexts, with standardized testing being a factor only in college admissions (in my knowledge). Interviews and essays (to continue the college admissions theme) are good ways to get an insight into the mind of the prospective student, but the crux is that they are interpreted subjectively and not objectively. This keeps a window for bias to creep in. Harvard University had instituted standardized entrance exam; they later scrapped it because of those who passed the exam, a large portion were Jews[0]. Standardized testing is an approach to selection that avoids this kind of direct bias, which is why it was selected as a way to ensure that all communities receive the same opportunities to educate their children (not that this worked out in practice).

s_trumpet··on The Musical Diversity of Pop Songs
> Lyrically: have you ever listened to what 2Pac or Biggie were saying? They were rhyming. There was an obvious lyrical flow. Now compare to Lil' Wayne who literally spouts gibberish. Lil wayne 'says words' to 'a beat' and that's it.

Firstly, a minor point: Wayne's dominant era is already a decade ago, and he is of the older generation of rappers now.

Wayne is not a "deep" rapper most times (although he has his moments, e.g. Tie My Hands and I Feel Like Dying). He's a punchline rapper - one who isn't trying to convey Meaning but just have fun on a beat. This tradition has a long history in hip-hop, going all the way back to the Sugarhill Gang and "Rapper's Delight".

His mixtape work is widely acclaimed as classic stuff - Da Drought 3, Dedication 2 and No Ceilings being the most prominent. His music has endless quotables, e.g. "real G's move in silence like lasagna"[0]. Rap heavyweights like Ice Cube, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Kendrick Lamar, Nas and Raekwon have high opinions of his work, with hip-hop pioneer KRS-One calling him the "greatest rapper of all time[1]." Post-Wayne rappers betray a huge influence, with e.g. Kendrick Lamar, Young Thug, A$AP Rocky, and most prominently Drake.
