s_ting765··on Blocking Kiwifarms
A shameful decision was made. It had to be justified obviously but still not any more or less terrible.

BTW Cloudflare is effectively hijacking kiwifarms.net by re-directing visitors to their blog page.

When government agencies bust websites associated with criminal activity the most they do after taking control of the homepage is put up a jpeg of the taskforce responsible and a few notes then call it day.

s_ting765··on Cloudflare's abuse policies and approach
For how long will the majority of internet users be policed by special interest groups though? How far along till we all noticed it's gone too far?

There are minority groups that propagate general hate too only that their brand of hate is sanctioned. Cloudflare can't make it up for whatever loopholes that exist outside the law. I wouldn't expect any company to go any further than required either.

I'm confused. I use this feature almost everyday on Chromium and never had to use an extension for it. You can move and resize the PIP window.
s_ting765··on VPNs on iOS are a scam
I think you just have to assume there's a possibility that the infrastracture can be compromised at any moment. For both of these two options. Guarantees from providers are valid until the day they are not.

Though a point has to be made about using a hosted VM for VPN purposes, you have some level of control about which specific software, configuration and encryption schemes etc. you want to use for your stack. Only downside is that currently there isn't sufficient hypervisor protection from the host kernel afaik.

However I do agree with you that either way, the risk threshold is too high if you are concerned about high level state actors. Neither commercial VPNs nor hosting providers can solve the "anonymity" problem for you.

What if you provision a new IP address every other week/month? i.e Assuming the provider allows it and the cost is negligible
s_ting765··on Ask HN: Which Linux terminal emulator do you prefer and why?
I recently started using kgx, aka console and it's a fresh breath of air tbh. Esp the purple color scheme change on the terminal tab whenever you are in a ssh shell. The red warning prompt after pasting a command with sudo in it is also a nice touch.

Didn't know the terminal could be this interactive but am liking it.

I liked blackbox and it was initially going to be my gnome-terminal replacement. If only the project was a bit more complete (has a high CPU usage bug).

s_ting765··on Credit-card debt is soaring
There is great incentive to show good numbers even when all is going downhill.[0]

Even greater incentive when the authorities tasked with safeguarding financial securities and markets don't know whether they are looking at a recession or it just hit them on the face.

There's been a great deal of public deception over the past 2-3 years on matters gdp, growth and overall market performance. The chicken has to come home to roost eventually.

s_ting765··on Linux Sucks 2022
I suspect your colleagues prefer Windows & Mac over Linux not because of Wayland incompatibility but rather because the software selection is better covered over there. E.g gaming software generally targets Windows OS.

It is no secret that Linux software has historically not been targeted at the masses. Add to that, developers who are not interested in publishing software on Linux platforms. You can see why the overall experience might not be that great on desktop Linux compared to Windows or Mac. Even though this might be changing as more users feel comfortable with Linux.

IMO iOS, Windows, Linux all have their strengths and flaws; it would be wrong to compare them side-by-side.

s_ting765··on Linux Sucks 2022
Everything I shared is from my own personal experience with using desktop Linux. Obviously your experience is going to be different from mine, as that depends on what software we use and what distro we pick.

That said. Bluetooth works as expected on my hardware. Clipboard sharing works as well, there was a time it was missing on gnome terminal but can't say am scratching my head about that one today.

Can't say I've see folder bookmarking across different file managers, even on Windows. You have to point me to examples here.

Telling a user how to reasonably fix a problem trump's whatever misconceptions you have about desktop Linux. They can always put Linux down and use whatever operating system works best for them, if they don't want to try alternative solutions.

> Bluetooth may work or not work

In my 4yrs+ of using Linux, this has never been a problem for me.

> Apps may be compatible or not with Wayland

App developer's fault. Besides xwayland bridges that gap.

> Power consumption may not be efficient

Use Wayland for GUI apps. Use more cli applications.

> Computer may not resume from sleep

This one I have to concede. It's been wonky but for me now seems reliably stable with my setup.

> The browser may burn CPU when playing videos

This one has been fixed recently. Chromium and Firefox already support hw video decode with Firefox set to make it the default configuration in FF 103.

> clipboard not being always shared

I don't know what your setup is but gnome's gpaste clipboard experience is 100x better than any OS I've used before.

> file managers not sharing bookmarks data across them

Have never come across this use case. Why would you expect this to be a feature? Even Windows doesn't support this feature when you swap file managers.

s_ting765··on LibreWolf: A privacy-focused Firefox fork
I'm glad this project exists. I stopped keeping count of how many new privacy offending features and nagware Firefox keeps churning out these days.
