s_ting765··on The Future of Flatpak
To make the best out of flatpak, it's best to think of it as a new sandboxed distribution that lives on your host system. E.g You could check if a specific theme is installable as a flatpak application.

Flatpaks are not perfect and I have my gripes with flatpak but the only alternative is Ubuntu's snaps.

s_ting765··on Why does Debian change software?
Arch has been bliss for me. I'm heavy on Flatpaks and primarily use Arch as a base operating system with very minimal config changes.
s_ting765··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
Just like anything AI, the problem is getting people to buy the grift being sold as a replacement for human labor.

s_ting765··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
Free crypto. There's a difference.
s_ting765··on The Future of Junior Software Engineering Roles
AI for coding tasks still needs a great deal of handholding. Someone senior needs to delete roughly 1/4 of the consistent garbage it currently adds to the acceptable output and still maintain the same code.
s_ting765··on You do not need NixOS on the desktop
I once mistakenly broke NixOS (ignore the rumors, it's not unbreakable) and that gave me a reason to break free from the IAC bondage. In the short time I used NixOS it only led me to more rabbit holes inside the OS instead of managing the complexity I was promised it would.
s_ting765··on Aegis Authenticator – Secure 2FA App for Android
The answer you're looking for is Aegis vault backup + Syncthing or Nextcloud. Seriously.

I once lost my Authy app data and didn't have it installed on any other of my devices (silly requirement tbh). I don't know whether cloud or 2FA is the joke here but Authy slapped me with a 24hr wait time for a "device reset".

s_ting765··on Twitter Blue for $8/Month
Just checked. They do have an impressive conversation rate (42% of total MAU [0]) if the numbers are true.

s_ting765··on Twitter Blue for $8/Month
How many people are willing to directly pay for content on those other platforms vs those who are not? Contrast that to Onlyfans' monetization success rate.
s_ting765··on Twitter Blue for $8/Month
> So you want to instead do the exact opposite – ask the consumers to pay and fund your creators with that money.

I think it's only Onlyfans that can get away with such a business model.

s_ting765··on “There Seem to be 10 managers for every one dev at Twitter” – Elon
Or he makes Twitter better (it sucks so much worse now) and everyone gets to enjoy it for free.
s_ting765··on Ask HN: Is DDG Becoming Unusable?
Gave up on DDG and now selfhost my own instance of searxng.
s_ting765··on Firefox Private Browsing mode upgrade
Mozilla's Firefox is the 'Google' of the FOSS world. Too big, too data (telemetry) hungry. They have even experimented with doing ads. I could go on and on.

You cannot be preaching about privacy and refuse to provide a simple toggle to opt-out of all telemetry in your software.

FYI I do use ungoogled chromium as my main browser.

s_ting765··on Firefox Private Browsing mode upgrade
Believe it. Firefox is kind of unbeaten in this regard.

There was a study carried out on what kinds of data leaks on browsers during launch [0] but Chromium specifically wasn't measured. I can only infer Safe browsing to be a leak point available on Chromium since it is shipped by default but I have it turned off (never needed it anyway) so I have not observed any pings related to it personally.

s_ting765··on Firefox Private Browsing mode upgrade
> Why don’t you give power users at the very least in about:config an option to disable ALL phoning home by Firefox upon launch and exit.

Biggest reason I refuse to use Firefox no matter how bad Chromium is. I sometimes use Firefox Focus for doing searches on my phone and the thing is always pinging mozilla services. Some of them location related. No way to turn any of these off on what is supposed to be an incognito browser.

s_ting765··on Improving Firefox Responsiveness on macOS
I want to like Firefox and ditch Chromium just because of this whole MV3 kerfuffle but it's not like Firefox is any better. Besides, Firefox has unilaterally killed off useful features like PWAs in the recent past. It's too flawed a product to be hyped up like this.
s_ting765··on Signal is secure, as proven by hackers
> secure enclave will get better with time

Intel already dropped SGX from their new line up of CPUs (11th gen +).

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29932630

s_ting765··on Signal is secure, as proven by hackers
This old article only proves how vulnerable Signal is by relying on the security (or lack thereof) of other 3rd party service providers.

The phone number requirement should be removed if Signal wants to be taken seriously. Maybe the next hit might affect more users than 1900 people.

s_ting765··on Celsius Execs Cashed Out $40M in Crypto Before Halting Withdrawals for Customers
Not sure the supporters of the Freedom Convoy over in Canada would agree with your strong faith in the legal safety of fiat money.
s_ting765··on Japan ends distribution of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, discards 13M doses
Vaccines have always provided immunity from infection. I can't believe am even providing a source for this but in case you've been living in a bubble. The CDC did change the definition of the term vaccination to remove immunization on their website. [0] Compared to what they have up today. [1]

Efficacy figures for covid vaccines were nothing but cooked-up gobbledygook. [2]

s_ting765··on Parag Agrawal Texts Elon Musk
No this was just Parag failing to read the room. You'd think a CEO of his level would appear more strategic when talking directly to a potential private buyer.

Regarding Twitter's failure to disclose the number of bots. Musk is well within his rights to squeeze the tomato before he makes a price offer.

s_ting765··on Why are sex workers forced to wear a financial scarlet letter?
> One of the uncomfortable conversations that many people don't want to have is that sex work is heavily used by society and yet neglected constantly, thereby making it dangerous for both sex workers and the users, even making it more dangerous at times.

I have heard this familiar argument made for the legalization of narcotics.

s_ting765··on Linux on the laptop works so damn well that it’s boring
Yes. Until you want to do anything gpu accelerated. You'll be lucky to setup hw video playback, and when you do hevc isn't supported. You want to watch your videos/or game in HDR? ,, banish those silly thoughts from your mind.

Emulating graphics hardware (GPU passthrough) with qemu is a pita.

You want to emulate Android apps, the best solution (Waydroid) only works on Wayland. Though this wouldn't be a problem if Xorg wasn't holding out. And Nvidia had played nice with Linux.

Memory and OOM situation management is a sham and another pita just waiting to bite. This could make you lose all your windows and in some cases even data as the solution involves forcing a reboot from your machine.

I could go on and on.

A lot of improvements have however been made in the usability aspect, main one being flatpak packages. But there's a terribly long road ahead to make Linux desktop feel less of a second-class citizen compared to other operating systems.

s_ting765··on Mozilla claims Apple, Google and Microsoft force users to use default browsers
I don't see the problem. Users have gotten used to the nagware in software they use everyday.

Am sure Mozilla bundles its own nagware into its browser.

s_ting765··on Censorship by big tech at the behest of the U.S. government?
Social media apps are, for the most part, a cancer to humanity. This article is just one more proof of it.

And the majority of people who, for the most part, demand for more censorship on these public platforms whenever an arbitrary content moderation issue arises... deserve all the propaganda coming their way from these corporate behemoths tag teaming with the government.

s_ting765··on LibRedirect: Redirect YouTube, Twitter, Instagram to privacy friendly services
No it's not. And it's one of the reasons I will be weeping when Chromium shits the bed with this MV3 migration.
s_ting765··on Firefox 105 – Better Linux Performance Under Memory Pressure
Fedora moved to systemd-oomd in F34. [0]

Though the upcoming MGLRU [1] patches (tested on Android and ChromeOS) should significantly [2] improve the kernel's handling of memory and oom situations.

s_ting765··on Proxy Chrome extensions are not going to be usable in MV3
I thought they were pushing it when they announced MV3, which would purposely can ad blockers. But this would finally put the nail to this coffin.

Now I'm even more curious to see how badly Chromium bangles this migration to V3.

I'm also curious as to why big internet advocacy organizations such as the EFF [0] have been quiet on this move.

--

Edit: It appears the EFF has spoken out about this a couple of times.

s_ting765··on Ask HN: What Linux setup/hardening guide do you use?
Hardening against vulnerabilities is a zero sum game ultimately.

It is my experience that most guides you will find for Linux hardening are either outdated, too opinionated or are written with shock value to induce paranoia [0].

I harden ssh (no root login, no passwords), setup fail2ban for it and leave it at that.

Only thing I remember to do is not to mess with security configurations e.g disabling selinux to make something work. Keeping number of software installed to an absolute minimum. And last but not least I setup automatic updates via unattended-upgrades.

s_ting765··on Why It’s OK to Block Ads (2015)
To me ads seem only to negatively UX more than anything. Case in point, I have began noticing a more than usual amount of ads on Twitter recently. I now get a sponsored ad after very 3 tweets compared to the one or two quick ones on every homepage load, sometimes none at all.

This has put me off the platform until they either A) Shift back to the previous acceptable amount of ads. B) Show a negligible amount of ads am willing to compromise on. C) Go out of my way to bypass the ads using a controlled client.

Only reasonable option left here would be C meaning using 3rd party clients that are limited feature-wise and give a worse UX experience than not using Twitter at all. This route in the long run hampers my Twitter experience to the extent that I would rather go back to square one and avoid using Twitter altogether.
