s_baby··on Non-Computability of Consciousness (2007)
>I mean, it's less exciting when you break that down into the what it means for a person to be aware of themselves. For me, it breaks down to neurons & symbols, well-known scientific domains.

I'm not aware of "neurons and symbols". I'm aware of feeling, sight, smell, etc.. The fact that consciousness is an experience is what's fundamentally at odds with building a consistent model. Modeling cognition is the easy part.

s_baby··on Non-Computability of Consciousness (2007)
I would say the psychological riddle is why people feel an urge to personally invest themselves in this issue. :tips fedora:
s_baby··on The Mission to Save the Internet by Rewiring It from the Name Up
A BT magnet link is a type of URN or "Uniform Resource Name". But you're right that is an unsolved problem.
s_baby··on How the language you speak changes your view of the world
I've heard Japanese doesn't really have "curse" words. I can't say how true that is.
s_baby··on Gut Wars: One Man's Adventure with Antibiotics and Ulcerative Colitis
Pretty good as a side dish.
s_baby··on Chemical Change in Synthetic Marijuana Suspected of Causing Illnesses
This is a marijuana/cannabinoid analog since these compounds don't exist in marijuana. Synthetic marijuana would be something like Marinol. It's a misleading title for someone who doesn't know the difference.
s_baby··on What If Students Could Fire Their Professors?
What's so great about this strategy? When a teacher does this to me I assume he/she is more interested in doing his research instead of leading a class.
s_baby··on Ask HN: US Visa without degree
For H1B 3 years work experience equals 1 year of college.
s_baby··on Learn AngularJS
Why? React isn't a full framework and solves a completely different problem.
s_baby··on Ask HN: Differences you've noticed between CS students and the self-taught?
Being able to answer those questions represent 1-2 freshman/sophomore level courses. Being able to answer these questions represents signaling more so than answers that are intrinsically representative of skill.
s_baby··on An Outspoken Voice for Women in Tech, Foiled by His Tone
>I don't see this as very complicated. Women, just like any aggrieved minority, don't want to be spoken for, or spoken to. They want to be heard; they want to speak for themselves.

Are you a woman?

s_baby··on How LINE is turning Instagram into an ecommerce app in Thailand
To me this looks like an organic extension of how Thai people go about engaging retail and service industries. This is a country where you step out your door and there are street carts soliciting you with every product and service you could want. This is taking that type of p2p business interaction which Thai people are comfortable with and expect and moving it to the internet.
s_baby··on I didn't wash my hair for a month an a half, here are the results
Most shampoos have harsh chemicals that make me breakout.
s_baby··on Don't call yourself a programmer (2011)
Why? Do you think there's something exceptional about being an "Engineer"?
s_baby··on What Silicon Valley Thinks of Women
>Feminists have been fighting for the right to work in coal mines, and fight on battlefields, and everything else.

It's terrible because it doesn't fit the narrative you're trying to push. Paying occasional lip service isn't the same as "fighting for the right". Working in a coal mine or fighting in the battlefield isn't a "right". It's an obligation blue collar families fall into.

s_baby··on What Silicon Valley Thinks of Women
Also "winning" the right to working in a coal mine or laying roofing wouldn't really be a victory after all compared to SV. These people want the upside of being a male without the risk that it carries. Yea some of us get to play this game in SV. What about the vast majority of us that have to work a shit job to support our family? Giving one gender privileged access to industries like SV while simultaneously sheltering them from industries like the coal mining industry would also be a horrible form of marginalization.
s_baby··on Why is Apple sitting on $142bn?
Not really. If all you're doing is feeding hungry people then you're just creating more hungry people.
s_baby··on Why Small Businesses Are Starting to Win Again
Craft beers are mass produced but sourcing ingredients that meet their requirements may or may not be scalable.
s_baby··on Why Men Love War (1984)
Yes this is historical fact. People(fathers AND mothers) will put their nation, religion, ethnicity, etc... before their own family. This preconception that motherhood transcends all these identities is why I felt compelled to respond to the title. Look at war mongering politicians in your country and see what the gender breakdown in support is. It's mostly even if it's like mine(US).
s_baby··on Why Men Love War (1984)
What about women? Mother's in Nazi Germany sent their sons off to war with proud smiles on their faces.
s_baby··on Inaudible High-Frequency Sounds Affect Brain Activity: Hypersonic Effect (2000)
I had the same problem with my computer fan.
s_baby··on Fasting triggers stem cell regeneration of damaged, old immune system (2014)
I think boost is the pop journalism lingo. Not what the study was measuring. The study mentions its positive effect on eczema, another autoimmune condition like Crohn's. My personal anecdotal evidence has to do with adult acne and hives. Something I suffer with on a daily basis. Flair ups for both stop when I go on calorie restricted diets or fast.
s_baby··on Long-term meditators self-induce high-amplitude gamma synchrony
Always good to get scientific confirmation but this has been known for a while. Here's a youtube example.

s_baby··on What happens to your bike after it’s stolen
>The problem is, it will cost $150 or so, plus monthly cellular data fees (you can dial 911 for free, but the police will not do anything with this).

pre-paid sms is cheap.

s_baby··on Gödel's ontological proof
>Premise 1: There are many worlds.

The premise is called the plenitude principle. "The principle of plenitude asserts that the universe contains all possible forms of existence."[1] You first see it in Plato's work like in the Cave Allegory. You can make a compelling argument that the plenitude principle was the precursor to the ideas of a multiverse and evolution.

s_baby··on Want to get rich? Don't pay off your student loans
I agree but it's hard to feel that way while jobless and in debt.
s_baby··on Want to get rich? Don't pay off your student loans
I believe it does compound but on a yearly basis instead of monthly.

Personally I was considering putting all my loan money into bitcoins but decided to be responsible. Sort of kicking myself in the ass for that decision.

s_baby··on Want to get rich? Don't pay off your student loans
I believe anything forgiven is counted as income. So you're going to be hit with a huge tax bill 25 years later.
s_baby··on AngularJS Performance in Large Applications
>Similarly, Angular provides the ability to watch entire objects by passing a third, optional true parameter to scope.$watch. This is, for lack of better words, a terrible idea. A much better solution is to rely on services and object references to propagate object changes between scopes.

How am I supposed to then propagate these changes into the DOM if I'm not using $watch?

s_baby··on Google to close engineering office in Russia
>So spare me rhetoric about every government or country being the same. No, they are not equal. And I hope the Putin administration will receive what it deserves.

Maybe not equal to you. US has propped up almost countless corrupt regimes and cartels for its own interest. You just don't care when it's happening in Saudi Arabia or Mexico.
